<strong>WORLD</strong> <strong>YWCA</strong> <strong>PRESIDENT</strong><br />
STATUS AND REQUIREMENTS<br />
The President is elected by the World Council and is an Officer of the World <strong>YWCA</strong>.<br />
Candidacy to this position is open to all women who meet the criteria, including those<br />
serving on the World Executive Committee/ Board.<br />
The President must be a woman <strong>YWCA</strong> member of an affiliated association,<br />
experienced and active in a national or local association (Existing Bye-Laws Article IV,<br />
section 3; Proposed Revised Constitution, Par. 45).<br />
The office of President is for a maximum of two (2) terms. A member of the Executive<br />
Committee who has served one term of four (4) years may serve two (2) further<br />
consecutive terms if elected as President. A member of the Executive Committee, who<br />
has served two (2) terms and is elected as President, can serve one term of four (4)<br />
years. (Byelaws Article IV, section 2; Proposed Revised Constitution, Par. 48-49).<br />
The President of the World <strong>YWCA</strong> is a volunteer position that is extremely important.<br />
To aspire for this position, a candidate must be willing to give a lot of time to the <strong>YWCA</strong><br />
movement as the chief volunteer. She must be visionary and ready to help guide the<br />
policies of the <strong>YWCA</strong> movement. She should have excellent diplomatic skills, as she is<br />
the chief ambassador of the organization. She should be knowledgeable of global<br />
issues and conversant with the women’s movement. She should be able to relate in a<br />
supervisory and collegial role to the General Secretary who is the Chief Executive<br />
Officer of the World <strong>YWCA</strong>. Most significant she must be skilled in chairing and<br />
running board meetings, managing the board members in a collegial manner and<br />
ensuring the Board fulfils its mandate. She should inspire respect both within <strong>YWCA</strong><br />
and in larger society. She should be a good speaker and should be prepared to<br />
undertake some extensive travel on behalf of the <strong>YWCA</strong>.<br />
SPECIFIC DUTIES<br />
1. Presides over the World Council and Executive Committee/ Board<br />
2. Oversees that the life and work of the World <strong>YWCA</strong> are in accordance with its<br />
Vision and Mission<br />
3. Provides leadership to the Executive Committee / Board in the governance of<br />
the World <strong>YWCA</strong>.<br />
4. Delegates responsibilities of leadership to members of the Executive<br />
Committee/ Board through working committees,<br />
5. Plans the agenda of the Executive Committee/ Board with the General<br />
Secretary,<br />

6. Ensures that new and bold policies continue to be developed by the Executive<br />
Committee/Board to advance the <strong>YWCA</strong> into the future<br />
7. Leads the Executive Committee/ Board in employment matters of the General<br />
Secretary.<br />
8. Takes responsibility for the job description and terms of reference for the<br />
General Secretary in consultation with the Treasurer<br />
9. Leads the process of appraising the performance of the General Secretary in<br />
consultation with the Officers<br />
10. Undertakes any other responsibilities as need arises<br />
