Federal Student Aid, an office of the U.S. Department of Education, plays a central and essential role in
America’s postsecondary education community. Their core mission is to ensure that all eligible individuals
benefit from federal financial assistance - grants, loans, and work-study programs - for education beyond high
school. The programs they administer comprise the nation’s largest source of student aid. Every year we provide
more than $100 billion in new aid to nearly 14 million postsecondary students and their families.

Undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships are forms of aid that help students pay for their education.
Unlike student loans, scholarships and fellowships do not have to be repaid. Hundreds of thousands of

Established in 1956 and today supported by close to 550 foundations, the Foundation Center is a national nonprofit
service organization recognized as the nation’s leading authority on organized philanthropy, connecting
nonprofits and the grantmakers supporting them to tools they can use and information they can trust. Its audiences
include grantseekers, grantmakers, researchers, policymakers, the media, and the general public.

Founded in 1972, the foundation offers grantsmanship training to nonprofit and government agencies. Before
this, no such training existed and small organizations lacked the skills to compete for grant opportunities.
