If I kept it to myself an HIV positive diagnosis as a death sentence. It became my ‘Wake up Call’! We don’t always realise the value of life until it is threatened so remember to always respect, protect and love yourself and your body. Every time I find myself getting down about life I remind myself that today I am healthy and well and I have today! Even though life at times is hard, I am excited about my future and all the opportunities and difficulties that will come my way. As Saint Francis of Assisi once said, “GOD grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.” HIV is not the enemy and has and will be my greatest teacher in life. Most importantly, take responsibility for your life and your body. Always remember this is your life and your body! Make sure you make informed choices. Young women intervene in a world with AIDS TOOL BOX Attract Attention Media There are two key elements in making news. Your article or story must be fresh and something that will interest people or that they will be able to relate to. The media can play an extremely powerful role in HIV and AIDS but often they don’t and sometimes they need to be educated on issues relating to HIV and AIDS. The media want information to be: • Relevant • Educational • Informative • Interesting • Unusual • Supplemented with graphics and images • Honest • Fair When talking to media people, be prepared and persuasive. Have in mind three key issues that you want to come out of that interview. Be accurate and ensure there is a follow up. When working with the media: • Correct them if they use incorrect language for example often reporters talk about AIDS victims and sufferers or AIDS patients when referring to people living with HIV and AIDS. Explain terms like PLWA’s and CD4 counts... etc. • Break barriers of silence, dispelling myths and misconceptions • Give new sources of information • Keep it fresh. If something is happening don’t wait five days for it to hit the news • Plan ahead and have a media strategy • Be proactive. Contact the media and tell them you have an interesting story for them • Involve them from the beginning of your project so that you develop a relationship with them • Be clear about who you are representing. Are you doing this in your personal capacity or are you representing an organisation • Always make sure you feel comfortable about the location that the 77
