The OMEGA Group joins the roles of Financial Advisor
and Portfolio Manager.
The OMEGA Portfolio Management Process
A sound investment strategy begins with an investment plan – an important
bridge to your financial success. Using a systematic investment process that is
highly personalized, Ken South will help you build a customized investment plan.
1. The Foundation: Developing an investment profile. The investment process
begins with a meeting to discuss your current financial situation and determine
your needs and objectives. Ken will explain how his investment style can help
fulfill those needs. A detailed Client Questionnaire, once complete, is used to
develop a customized investment program. Ken will also explain his investment
philosophy, strategies and method of stock selection. Once your goals and
objectives are established, a personal Investment Policy Statement is written.
2. The Framework: Building an asset allocation strategy. Using the information
developed in Step 1, a strategic asset allocation is created, tailored to meet
your specific financial needs, investment objectives and risk tolerance. A
variety of asset classes is included to help mitigate overall portfolio volatility.
Alternative Investments (where appropriate) 1 may also be employed. Tax
implications of the fixed income portion of your portfolio will also be
considered to determine if taxable or tax-free income is most advantageous.
3. Solid Construction: Selecting a diversified portfolio. As a Senior Portfolio
Manager, Ken South focuses in constructing portfolios utilizing a number
of relative strength measures. Your money will be invested in a diversified
portfolio of securities specifically designed with the goal of meeting your
investment objectives. Ken will manage your portfolio by diversifying
between value and growth securities when appropriate. He will also
monitor whether it is appropriate to own small, medium or large
capitalization companies in the relative strength asset classes that are
showing the leading performance. He also maintains a global perspective to
ensure that these companies are benefiting from global growth trends. This
core approach serves as the foundation of your asset allocation strategy.
Additional diversification is sought through Oppenheimer Asset
Management Inc.'s (OAM) Consulting Group multi-advisor program
where appropriate. This can also entail the use of Alternative Investment
Strategies (proper net worth verification will be determined first). The
Consulting Group will assist in this consulting role.* The Consulting
Group also conducts due diligence and maintains an extensive database on
the performance of a large number of what OAM considers to be some of
the leading investment managers in the world.
4. Careful Oversight: Monitoring your progress. A formal review process is
used to determine if the portfolio is meeting your investment goals. Ken
actively manages this process, meeting periodically to discuss portfolio
performance. He will meet with clients to understand changes in their
personal situations and investment objectives and also monitor your
portfolio to determine that the original asset allocation decision remains
appropriate and consistent with changes in your life.
1 For further information about the products/programs available and their suitability for your portfolio, please contact your Oppenheimer Financial Advisor. Any discussion of securities, including
any hedge funds or other alternative investments, should not be construed as a recommendation or an offer or solicitation to buy or sell interest in any such securities. Securities products offered or
sold by Oppenheimer will not be endorsed or guaranteed by Oppenheimer and will be subject to investment risks, including the possible loss of principal invested. Alternative investments are made
available only to qualified investors and involve varying degrees of risk.
Approach to Equity Investing
Ken employs a relative strength and Dynamic Asset Level Investing (DALI)
discipline to construct a core equity portfolio of both U.S. and foreign growth
and value stocks from companies included in the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index,*
and other like indexes throughout both the developed and emerging markets.
He will also be employing Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) to gain exposure to
currencies, commodities and specialized bonds when appropriate. He utilizes
Dorsey Wright's DALI sector / market relative strength analysis coupled with
Investors Business Daily's CANSLIM equities to construct the equity portion of
the portfolio. By employing these two overview methods, he creates his own
style that he believes has the potential for significant price appreciation over a
period of twelve months or longer.
Ken South's goal is for the portfolio to benefit from the cycles in which
different asset classes and markets may be in favor even if the others may not.
Stocks for the portfolio are evaluated using Investors Business Daily, daily graphs
and a multiple security analysis framework. These factors, along with the stock's
historical performance, are combined to create a ranking for the securities in the
portfolio. Regular screening using Bloomberg's DeMark count allows Ken to
measure an exhaustion move for markets, sectors, individual securities and
ETFs. By regular screening and monitoring of the portfolio holdings, it can be
determined if the representative holdings remain within the parameters of his
buy-rated screens. Securities falling outside of these parameters are sold during
these continuous reviews and are replaced only with stocks meeting the purchase
criteria of the model. Ken believes that over time, through this multiple
discipline approach, he may reduce the risk of under-performing the benchmark
index by being overweighted to the best relative strength countries, markets,
sectors and, ultimately, companies.
Approach to Fixed Income Investing
Ken utilizes a tax-sensitive, risk-averse approach to fixed income investments.
His objective is to achieve consistent long-term rates of return with reduced
volatility. Through fundamental and sector analysis, he identifies securities that
he believes are relatively undervalued and purchases them within a framework
that seeks to control risk. He orchestrates this by using individual bonds, fixed
income ETFs and mutual funds. Often, these managed types of fixed income
instruments provide the ability to invest in markets where individuals cannot
do so efficiently. Based on the objectives of the account being managed,
considerations are made for the appropriateness of foreign, taxable and taxexempt
bonds. This further adds to the customization of each portfolio.
Tax Efficiency
While Oppenheimer does not provide tax advice, Ken believes that tax-managed
performance is important for optimal investment returns. The goal for taxable
accounts is to allow unrealized gains to build over the years, thereby reducing
the current tax on gains, and for realized gains to be long term, wherever
possible, to take advantage of the lower tax rate. The combination of these two
strategies can be applied to help lower the client's tax burden.**
