Week 8, Term 3 Learning Together 6/9/2012
Dear families
Last Friday I had the privilege of accompanying
Mrs Alone and our Pasfika dance group to Cobbity
Public School where they had been invited to
perform for their multicultural day. The girls did
the school and themselves proud, their
performance and behaviour was nothing short of
spectacular.
Driveway Gates
Our automatic gates on the driveway are finally
operational. The gates will be closed between
8.20am and 3.30pm each day. Pedestrian access
to the school still be available via the two gates
on Clydesdale Drive and the gate on Badgally Road
(near the bus stop). This new procedure will begin
on Monday 10 th September.
Swimming Scheme
A permission note went home to all Year 2 and 3
students regarding the Swimming Scheme
program which will take place at Campbelltown
Swimming Pool, Bradbury in Term 4. This is a
wonderful opportunity for your child to further
develop their swimming and water safety skills.
There will be two groups of 60 students who will
be able to participate in the swimming program.
Depending on student numbers, your child will be
placed in ONE of the following groups.
Similarly next Tuesday Mr Collins and our
Drumbeat group have been invited to perform at
Mawarra Public School. I am sure they will also
give a wonderful performance.
It is wonderful to see our fantastic school being
recognised by other schools in our community.
Finally just a reminder that there is NO pupil
free day at the beginning of term 4, students will
resume after the holidays on Monday 8 th October.
Regards
Greg Turnbull
Principal
The Scheme for Group 1 will begin on Monday
22nd October to Friday 26 th October.
The Scheme for Group 2 will begin on Monday
28th October to Friday 2 nd November.
The total cost for the 5 day swimming scheme is
$11.50.
As there are only 60 places available for each
group, you need to be quick to return the
permission note with the $11.50 to ensure that
your child has a place.
If your child did not receive a permission note,
please see your child’s teacher or the front
office to get one. Next week, permission notes
will be sent home to all students in Years 4- 6.
Dropping Off and Picking Up Students
This is just a reminder about the drop off and
pick up zones on Clydesdale Road. These Zones
are for your convenience, children’s safety and to
assist drivers and passengers to enter or exit a
vehicle safely.
The room operates between 2:30 and 3:00pm on
both Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons or you
an speak to Ms Low at breakfast club to make an
alternative time to visit and browse the shelves.
We look forward to helping you choose a game to
borrow to take home and play with your child.
Please remember to stop your vehicle as close to
the top of the zone, allowing vehicles behind you
easy access to the zone. It is important to ensure
that the rules of these drop off zones are
followed to ensure that all of our students remain
safe coming to and from school.
Peer Support
Peer Support update of sessions and extra
activities that can be completed at home.
Week 9
In Peer Support this week children will be
focusing on the skills of winning in a friendly way
and coping with losing. The children will
participate in various activities and discuss how to
accept the outcome of a game, no matter what it
is, in a friendly way in order to maintain those
friendships.
During the week encourage your child to practise
these skills in all aspects of life – whether it be
weekend sport or choosing what to watch.
Week 10
In this week’s final sessions of the Peer Support
module Keeping Friends the children will be
participating in a board game, reinforcing all of
the concepts and skills that have been learned
over the past term. They will be reminded of the
qualities of a good friend and the skills needed to
maintain friendships and make new friends. Each
Peer Support group will have the opportunity it
celebrate what they have learned and the new
friendships and connections they have made.
Thank you to everyone for their support during
Peer Support this term.
Kindergarten Enrolments for 2013
It seems that enrolments are getting earlier
every year! If you have a child turning 5 by the
end of July you are able to enrol them for
Kindergarten next year.
At the moment we have a number of applications
for students who are ‘out of area’. These will only
be accepted if there are vacancies after local
enrolments.
Please pick up an enrolment form from the office
as soon as possible.
Please remember when you come in with your
completed enrolment application form you also
need to bring;
• Proof of student’s residential address
• Birth certificate or identity documents
• Immunisation history statement
• Copies of any family law or other relevant
court orders (if applicable)
Please be aware without these documents we
will be unable to accept your enrolment.
Kindergarten orientation will be held in Term 4.
More information about orientation will be
supplied at a later date. Please continue to check
the newsletter.

Descriptive Writing
Zoran was a forest goblin, one of the best. He
had stretched, pointed ears as most goblins do,
his hands and feet were extremely large to assist
him in climbing trees and running fast. He was
small but muscular with barely any fat on him
because in the forest all there was hard work. He
stood quite hunched over, never upright as goblins
are not as evolved as humans.
Mitchell Regan 5M
Writing in Recounts
Zoran Class 3/4S have been writing Literary
Recounts.
Here are some student samples using the
following themes:
• It was Saturday
• My friend and I
• And the Mystery Light
A Terrifying Birthday
It was Saturday, the day my best friend Alyssa
was coming over to my house for my birthday. It
was going to be a great day and I knew it.
Soon Alyssa arrived and then we saw it! A light
was coming from the basement. My parents
weren’t home so we had no one to tell. We didn’t
go down there in case something happened to us.
Alyssa and I went into my room and played some
games knowing we would be safe in there. But
after a while, we had totally forgotten about the
light and because we were a bit bored, we decided
to go down into the basement.
Then we saw the light again. We ran upstairs into
the kitchen and after calming down, we ate some
food. My parents soon came home and we were so
happy to see them.
My parents then asked us to bring up some boxes
from the basement. So we went down again and
found that the light was just a new bedside lamp
and was one of my presents for my birthday.
My Epic Maze Adventure
It was a cold Saturday and Raven-Lee and I were
playing inside her house. Suddenly, we caught
sight of a mysterious light right outside her
window. We couldn’t see what it was because it
was too bright. I decided to check it out and told
Raven-Lee to stay inside. As I walked towards
the light, Raven-Lee saw me fade away into it and
decided to chase after me.
Raven-Lee and I then found ourselves in some
kind of maze. We were so confused about where
to go but after some time, the mysterious light
faded and we found ourselves in a giant garden
maze. We saw a list of rules that told us that we
weren’t allowed to cheat. So we started the maze
but ran into twelve dead ends.
Finally we made it out and Raven-Lee’s mother
asked us where we had been. I responded, “having
an epic maze adventure.”
Hooray For Hollywood Photos
Recently many parents ordered and paid for
copies of our School’s Hooray for Hollywood
photos.
Most photos have now been handed out with a few
more coming soon.
Thank you to everyone for your support. Total
sales reached $648.00 and all of these funds go
towards our creative arts programs.
Great job !!
Pasifika Garden Project
Dear parents/carers
To help contribute to the garden project, we are
seeking any unwanted newspaper or grass
clippings. Instead of throwing it away, it would be
much appreciated if you could have you or your
child bring it to school as it will help start the
process of the garden.

What tips can I use to help my child
learn maths at home?
The Great Aussie Bush Camp
Tip 3: Keep Maths Fun!
• Count everything! Count toys, kitchen utensils,
and items of clothing as they come out of the
dryer. Help your child count by pointing to and
moving the objects as you say each number out
loud. Count forwards and backwards from
different starting places. Use household items
to practise adding, subtracting, multiplying,
and dividing.
• Ask your child to help you solve everyday
number problems. "We need six tomatoes to
make our sauce for dinner, and we have only
two. How many more do we need to buy?" "You
have two pillows in your room and your sister
has two pillows in her room. How many
pillowcases do I need to wash?" "Two guests
are coming to eat dinner with us. How many
plates will we need?"
• Practise "skip counting". Together, count by
2's and 5's. Ask your child how far he or she
can count by 10's. Roll two dice, one to
determine a starting number and the other to
determine the counting interval. Ask your child
to try counting backwards from 10, 20, or
even 100.
Year 5 & 6 camp was a fabulous experience for all
involved. The children worked as teams and built
relationships through team building exercises,
such as, crate climb, commando and pioneering.
The children also overcame their fears of height
by completing activities such as the giant swing,
dual flying fox and high ropes. But most of all we
all got to play in the mud at lost world, although
our clothes will never be the same again, lost
world allowed all the children and some teachers
to have no worries and just get muddy and
completing the obstacles.
• Make up games using dice and playing cards.
Try rolling dice and adding or multiplying the
numbers that come up. Add up the totals until
you reach a target number, like 100. Play the
game backwards to practise subtraction.
• Play "Broken Calculator". Pretend that the
number 8 key on the calculator is broken.
Without it, how can you make the number 18
appear on the screen? (Sample answers: 20 –
2, 15 + 3). Ask other questions using different
"broken
Here are a few words from the children.
First of all, I had a great experience fighting my
fears of height. After a couple of times being so
high in the air I started to become an adrenaline
junky. I found that working in groups was the
best because I learnt a lot of things about other
people that I have never met before in year 5. I
would like to give a big thank you to Miss Dash,
Mr Tate, Ms Cavallaro and Ms McMahon for
taking us and taking time away from their families
to look after all of us. I look forward to seeing
year 5 and 6 working together more often.
Caprice 6D
On the 20th of August 2012 year 5 and 6 set off
on camp it was a great experience and I was lucky
that my parents paid for me to go. At The Great
Aussie Bush Camp we participated in lots of
activities such as canoeing, archery, giant swing,
lost island and more. During camp we also
participated in night activities, which were
commando where we had to save hostages in the
dark and county fair where we had to run a stall
and make money. Overall I had a lot of fun and
I'm pretty sure everyone else did to!!!!!
Noah 6D
Camp was a very fun experience. Some of the
activities were – a very exhilarating-giant swing, a
commando style mud course, and a whole lot of
other stuff. overall, camp was a very, very, very,
very, very, very, very fun experience.
Chris 6D
Camp was extremely fun it was so awesome and I
had a fantastic time on all the activities my
favourite was the dual flying fox which I went on
two times. I went on all the activities which
where high ropes, archery, lost island, canoeing,
pioneering, commando, giant swing and crate
climb all the activities were challenging and fun
the food was nice and the staff were great our
teachers were very supportive and made sure we
had a try at everything so I would like to thank all
the teachers that attended.
