Wallonia, Belgium : the new European Biopole
Situated to the South of Brussels, the capital of Europe, between the Netherlands, the Federal Republic
of Germany, the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg and France, Wallonia covers 55 % of the territory of the
Kingdom of Belgium and has approximately 3.2 million inhabitants, the great majority of them Frenchspeaking.
Linked to its neighboring countries by a road, rail and river network which counts among
the most dense in the world, Wallonia can rightly be called the crossroads of Europe and thanks to
the talent and skills of its population, it has become a major industrial hub.
With its 10 university centers , over 300 research laboratories and 6 science parks and numerous innovative
businesses, the Wallonia Region of Belgium is well positioned to face today’s and tomorrow’s
challenges in science and technology. Thanks to the combined effort of its universities, industry and
regional authorities, Wallonia has become a new major European Technopolis with outstanding expertise
in biotechnology, new materials, aerospace, and information technology.
BioWin: the Health Cluster in Wallonia, Belgium
Wallonia hosts over 70 % of Belgium’s biotech activities with close to 100 companies generating more
than 2.5 billion US dollars in revenues and employing close to 13,000 highly qualified personnel.
Major U.S. players in the healthcare industry have established production, R&D and distribution facilities
in Wallonia. Just to name a few: Pfizer, GSK Biologicals, Baxter, Johnson&Johnson and Wyeth.
Wallonia is also home to the main production and R&D center in Europe of UCB Biopharma Group. The
world’s leading company in the field of protontherapy, IBA, is also headquartered in Wallonia and can
boast a success story in the USA.
The most recent initiative in life sciences has been launched by the Government of the Wallonia Region
with the creation of BioWin, a competitiveness cluster designed to boost R&D projects and training initiatives,
in a close collaboration between industry and university, in key areas such as cancer, neurological
and inflammatory diseases.

(AWEX)
The Wallonia Foreign Trade and Investment Agency (AWEX) is the Wallonia Region of
Belgium’s government agency in charge of foreign trade promotion and foreign investment attraction.
The agency has a worldwide network of 107 Economic and Trade Attachés.
AWEX is ISO 9001 certified since April 2002.
As a foreign trade agency, AWEX carries out a mission of promotion and information for the benefit of
both Wallonia and the foreign business community.
Upon request, AWEX assists buyers, decision-makers, importers and foreign prospects by:
• Providing economic data on Wallonia and its export potential
• Disseminating information on products and services from companies located in Wallonia
• Identifying companies in Wallonia for international partnerships
• Distributing lists of exporters from Wallonia
As an export partner for Wallonia-based companies, Awex offers a wide range of export-oriented
services and activities:
• General and commercial information on foreign markets
• Market studies tailored to specific areas upon request
• Organization and planning of marketing activities (international trade shows, economic missions,
sector-based contact days…)
• Establishing contacts with international organizations
• Promoting Wallonia’s export potential abroad

As a foreign investment agency, AWEX has an overall responsibility for the attraction of foreign
investment in Wallonia. This includes seeking out and providing information to potential foreign
investors. The Agency also offers a pro-active follow-up service to investors already established in
Wallonia. In addition, it is in charge of identifying new foreign investors for the acquisition of
industrial sites under restructuring process.

Analis is a distributor of scientific laboratory equipment. Its 'Analis R&D Diag' unit develops diagnostic
IVD kits, using electrophoretic and capillary electrophoretic techniques (CEofix Kit):
kits for clinical and research laboratories appropriate for diagnostics, detection and analysis of
compounds, follow-up and treatment of pathologies. There's a wide application field, such as prevention
and safety (diagnostic kit for the follow-up of alcohol dependance and alcohol abuse),
health and preventive follow-up of children (detection kit for hemoglobin variants)... This division
also offers assistance in developing new applications based on capillary electrophoresis. The aim
of 'Analis R&D Diag' is to develop its exportation network by looking for specialized distributors,
given the specificity of its products. Moreover, the R&D Diag unit of Analis is seeking every collaboration
that could completely exploit their expertise in the field of electrophoresis and capillary electrophoresis.
This would lead to the development of new diagnostic kits, new analysis methods or production
of OEM products.

DIAsource ImmunoAssays (formerly BioSource Europe) has recently introduced its new CEmarked
25OH Vitamin D Total RIA test into the market. The test is based on newly developed and
patented (Patent Pending) monoclonal antibodies that recognize both 25OH Vitamin D2 and 25OH
Vitamin D3. With this assay DIAsource completes its existing portfolio of 25OH Vitamin D3 specific and
the 1.25(OH)2 Vitamin D tests that have been in the market for more than 15 years now. This new
25OH Vitamin D Total RIA test will be followed by a new 25OH Vitamin D Total ELISA assay by the
end of the second quarter of this year. This latter will be validated on open ELISA automates. With
these new assays DIAsource enforces its presence in the Vitamin D testing market which is in full
expansion at the moment.

D-tek is a Belgian private owned company specialized in auto-immunity. Since 1995, D-tek has developed
and manufactured in-vitro diagnostics for autoimmune diseases. The company produces a range
of ELISA kits and different ranges of ImmunoDot kits. In 2011, D-tek has notably launched an innovative
automated system for the processing of its immunodot kits. Moreover, D-tek proposes the first
microarrays in autoimmune diagnostic field called BlueDot Quantum.
Moreover, D-tek produces and commercializes a complete range of single component and ready-touse
enzymatic substrates (NBT, TMB and pNPP), stabilizers (Alkaline Phosphatase, Horseradish
