PRESIDENT’S
REPORT
DIRECTOR’S
REPORT
Again, it is my pleasure on behalf
of the Board of Management to thank
our membership for continued wonderful
support of the Gallery. The exhibition
program and associated public programs
were highly attended and we are most
appreciative of your high regard
of the Gallery.
No doubt the highlights of the year were
the Cecil Beaton: Portraits and Designs for
a Modern World: Charles Rennie Mackintosh
exhibitions. This was evidenced by record
attendance over the three month period
of the exhibitions. I congratulate our
Director and staff for their wonderful
leadership of these projects. As well,
I thank our fine group of loyal volunteers
for their magnificent assistance throughout
the exhibition. It was heartening to read
and see all of the publicity the exhibitions
generated. A very pleasing aspect of both
exhibitions was the strengthening of links
between Bendigo Art Gallery and the
National Portrait Gallery of London
and the Glasgow Museum.
Robert Jacks continued to support the
Gallery with the Robert Jacks Drawing
Prize which is now in its fifth year.
I congratulate the 2005 winner
Michael Zavros.
The Board continues to seek funding
and sponsorship to assist the Gallery
with its operation and various programs.
La Trobe University continues to be
an important supporter and on behalf
of the Board I thank them for their
ongoing financial support. The Sidney
Myer fund very generously gifted
a signification donation towards our
exhibition program. I also acknowledge
the support of The Advertiser, Southern
Cross Ten, and Elgee Park Wines.
Bendigo Art Gallery is indeed fortunate
to be the recipient of significant gifts
throughout the course of the year.
On behalf of the Board it is my pleasure
to thank Mr Baillieu Myer AC and Mrs
Sarah Myer, Mr Rod Fyffe, Justice Paul
Guest, Dr and Mrs Hadley, Mrs Helen
Bruinier and family. I also acknowledge
the wonderful support from the Helen
Macpherson Smith Trust. As well,
a number of donors who wished to remain
anonymous have made very significant
contributions to the Gallery. I am very
pleased that our donors regularly visit the
Gallery and maintain a strong connection.
Throughout the course of the year
the Gallery was pleased to host visits
from the Honourable Mary Delahunty,
Victorian Minister for the Arts, the
Rt Hon Helen Liddell UK High
Commissioner to Australia, Mrs Patricia
Ferguson, Scottish Minister for Culture
and Tourism, the Rt Hon Liz Cameron,
Lord Provost of Glasgow, the German
Consul General, Thomas Kessler
and Mrs Kessler.
My thanks to all of the volunteers,
Margaret Bowden President of the Friends
of Bendigo Art Gallery, and the Friends
Committee, Senior Guide, Lyn Byrne
and the Guides for their generous support
of the Gallery.
I thank my fellow Board members
for their strong support of the Gallery
and acknowledge their commitment,
enterprise and expertise. I am indebted
to the exceptional work of the staff under
the fine leadership of Karen Quinlan,
Director Bendigo Art Gallery.
Finally, on behalf of all involved in
the Gallery I am thankful for the ongoing
partnership with the City of Greater
Bendigo. Together, we will continue
to grow Bendigo Art Gallery’s ever
evolving place within the Arts sector.
John E Higgs
Another successful year has passed and
I am delighted to say that we have record
attendance figures of 89,103 to report.
The exhibition Cecil Beaton: Portraits
was certainly a highlight in the calendar.
At the same time Designs for a Modern
World: Charles Rennie Mackintosh ensured
that attendances over the summer period
amounted to 35,000.
New works of art collected over
the last financial year have been significant
and many will be displayed in the
exhibition Decade which celebrates ten
years of collecting. 2006 marks the 10th
anniversary since Bendigo Art Gallery’s
Board of Management entered into
an agreement with the City of Greater
Bendigo who now own and operate
this institution, a relationship that can
be described as healthy and successful.
Staff changes in the last financial year
have seen Noel Hourigan join the
technical team, and with Senior Curator
Tracy Cooper-Lavery on maternity
leave, Leanne Fitzgibbon was appointed
Acting Senior Curator, and Tansy
Curtin appointed Curator. The growth
in the technical department has allowed
collection management to stride forward
with a number of ongoing projects
including database enhancement, image
capture, and further implementation
of the location system.
The education program has returned
to normal with the appointment of
Margot Feast who replaced Peter Hughes
midway through the financial year.
Together with the new after school art
teacher Joy Tatt, and Helen Attrill, our
education department has offered a range
of programs and encouraged new students
to partake in the weekly sessions and the
school holiday workshops.
I thank my staff for another successful
year. The challenges we faced throughout
the Cecil Beaton: Portraits will be revisited
later this year when we open The World’s
Most Photographed. I acknowledge the
flexibility and preparedness of staff to
embrace the varying challenges associated
with exhibitions of this nature.
I would like to highlight the great work
of our volunteers including Margaret
Bowden and the Friends of Bendigo Art
Gallery, whose participation numbers
have grown remarkably over the past
year. Likewise I acknowledge the work
of our Gallery guides led by Senior Guide,
Lyn Byrne. The daily tours are enjoyed
by many of our Gallery visitors and this
is a wonderful support for our full-time
staff. The highly motivated network of
volunteers has given the Gallery many
hours of time and we are very appreciative
of their efforts.
I acknowledge the contribution of our
donors, Rod Fyffe, Fred Cress, Keith
and Heather Peake, The Schellenberger
Collection, Steig Persson, Robert Juniper
and an anonymous donor. I also thank
our sponsors for their generous support
throughout 2005-2006; La Trobe University
(Major Sponsors), The Advertiser and
Southern Cross Ten (Media Sponsors),
and Elgee Park Wines.
We welcomed new Café operators Renzo
and Julia Panozzo, who have injected new
vitality into the Café and this is of direct
benefit to the Gallery experience. I highly
recommend this team who offer great
food, wine and excellent customer service.
Finally, I extend my thanks to our
President, John Higgs and the Board
of Management for their ongoing
support and exceptional governance.
I acknowledge my colleagues at the
City of Greater Bendigo who contribute
in many ways in order to make the
Gallery what it is — a regional success.
CURATORIAL
REPORT
During 2005–2006 Bendigo Art Gallery
continued its commitment to presenting
a diverse and dynamic exhibition program
and schedule of events. In addition to
participating in a number of national touring
exhibitions, the Gallery presented several
self-initiated projects and exhibitions,
and undertook the project management
of two international exhibitions. Overall,
the Gallery’s program included 15
exhibitions in total, 11 of which were
initiated by the Gallery.
A highlight early in the financial year
was the exhibition The End of the Rainbow,
which delved into the Gallery’s own
collection to illuminate Victoria’s golden
past with a selection of works on paper
and sculpture that recorded the impact
of the gold rush on the development
of Bendigo. A significant inclusion in
the exhibition was the recent acquisition,
George Rowe’s The End of the Rainbow,
Golden Square, executed in 1857 and
acquired through the Newson Bequest
Fund. Drawings, lithographs, engravings,
watercolours and photographs by artists
such as Alexander Fox, ST Gill, Charles
Travers Mackin, Nicholas Chevalier, John
Northcote and Nicholas Caire were also
included in this exhibition which was of
considerable interest to locals and visitors
alike. There continues to be great interest
in the historical works in the Gallery’s
collection, with such exhibitions sparking
future research and exhibition ideas.
Other major exhibitions which were
drawn from the Gallery’s own collection
were Larger Than Life, an exhibition
of oversized works which included artists
such as Andrew Browne, Christopher
Langton, Richard Larter, Mike Parr
and Patricia Piccinini, Tainted Love:
Contemporary developments in landscape
focussing on the works of Dale Frank,
Rosemary Laing, Chris Langlois, Janet
Laurence and John Wolseley, and Twentieth
Century, a comprehensive overview
of artworks from 1900–1999. Twentieth
Century provided the first opportunity
for the Gallery to display the epic work,
Journey of the Sun, by locally based artist
Leonard French. The work was presented
to Bendigo Art Gallery in 2003 by
Commonwealth Custodial Services under
the Cultural Gifts Program. This Federal
Government initiative encourages gifts
of significant cultural items to public
art galleries, museums and libraries
by offering donors a tax deduction
for the market value of their gifts. Some
of the Gallery’s key works have been
gifted through this scheme. The work was
commissioned in 1980 for the State Bank
Centre, Melbourne (corner of Elizabeth
and Bourke Streets) and was displayed
above the tellers’ desk until early 2004.
To coincide with Larger Than Life,
the Gallery invited Melbourne based
South African artist Christopher Langton
to install a giant inflatable work on the
Gallery façade. Crouching threateningly
above the entrance, the enormous redback
spider measuring some six metres in
diameter created quite a stir amongst
visitors and passers-by. The Gallery is most
grateful to Christopher and his assistant
Erin O’Callaghan for their support
in installing this work.
During the summer period the Gallery
brought to Australia the international
touring exhibition Cecil Beaton: Portraits,
from the National Portrait Gallery,
London. Such a significant exhibition
placed considerable demands on the
curatorial and technical staff, however the
overwhelming response to the exhibition
from the public certainly made all efforts
worthwhile. The exhibition was presented
for an extended period, from early
December 2005 through to the end
of March 2006, and so enabled the Gallery
to schedule a considerable number of
special programs and events for members.
Included in the special events were
introductory tours throughout the week,
a lecture program on the life and work
of Cecil Beaton by Julie Millowick, Senior
Lecturer, Visual Arts & Design, Lecturer
in Charge of Photojournalism, La Trobe
University, Bendigo., and a film screening
at the Star Cinema of My Fair Lady
with high tea served afterwards, which
proved extremely popular. The Gallery
also presented ‘Beaton After Hours’, a
lecture program which included guest
speakers such as Montalbetti + Campbell,
Canon AIPP Australian Advertising
Photographers of the Year 2005, Paola Di
Trocchio, Assistant Curator International
Fashion & Textiles, National Gallery of
Victoria, and Craig Kendal, of Naked Eye
Astronomy who, drawing inspiration from
the star portraits on display, took visitors
on a parallel journey getting to know the
stars of the night sky. These and other
programs presented by the Gallery were
designed to complement the exhibition
and to continue to build on the Gallery’s
standing as a venue for education,
enjoyment and appreciation of the arts.
To coincide with the Commonwealth
Games in March 2006, Bendigo Art
Gallery was the exclusive venue for
the first Australian exhibition to feature
international works by the acclaimed
Scottish designer Charles Rennie
Mackintosh. Designs for a Modern World
was presented in partnership with
Glasgow Museums, Scotland, and included
international works on loan from the
collection of Glasgow Museums and the
National Trust for Scotland, together with
selected works from Australian galleries
and a private lender. The exhibition
provided a rare opportunity for visitors
to view works from Australian collections
alongside significant loans from overseas,
and included works by Charles Rennie
Mackintosh and Margaret and Frances
Macdonald. The exhibition developed
from the proposed single loan of the
most impressive Hill House writing
desk, designed by Mackintosh in 1904
and valued at more than £1 million.
The Gallery subsequently arranged for
additional loans to support this iconic
work of 20th century design. A short film
produced by the Glasgow Museum was
projected in the space allowing visitors
to journey through Mackintosh designed
homes, and guest curator Alison Brown
from Glasgow provided a number
of introductory lectures on the Glasgow
style. The Gallery appreciated the support
provided by Festival Melbourne in
bringing the exhibition to Bendigo,
and welcomed the opportunity to form
a partnership with Glasgow Museums.
The Gallery’s commitment to local content
in its exhibition program continued,
with the display of an exclusive exhibition
of the recent work of locally based artist
Wendy Stavrianos. A Metaphysical Edge
was complemented by a number of talks
by the artist in addition to workshops
for student groups. Gallery staff were
pleased to have the opportunity to work
closely with Wendy, and to produce the
exhibition catalogue which accompanied
the exhibition.
Another exhibition of local significance
was In the Spotlight: Theatre Design by Steven
Butler. Originally from Bendigo, Butler
studied at NIDA in Sydney, from which
he graduated in 2004. He represented
NIDA at the Prague Quadrennial Design
Exhibition in 2004, and has designed
for various productions. The exhibition
investigated the design process from initial
concepts and preliminary drawings
for costumes and characters to complex
three-dimensional models of stage sets.
Visitors relished the opportunity to step
behind the scenes of theatre production
through this exhibition which was
displayed in the Sidney Myer Work
on Paper Gallery.
The Gallery was pleased to provide
the first opportunity for an Australian
audience to view the work, Salad Days
by Ricky Swallow, on loan from the
National Gallery of Victoria through
the Victorian Foundation for Living
Australian Artists (VFLAA). The work
was unveiled on 19 April 2006 by the
Minister for the Arts, Mary Delahunty.
The work, from Ricky Swallow’s Venice
Biennale exhibition, was acquired through
the $10 million fund established by
the Victorian Government, in partnership
with the NGV, to purchase works
by contemporary Australian artists.
The Gallery also supported numerous
exhibitions both nationally and
internationally by providing works
on loan from its collection. Two
significant works, Homeless by Thomas
Kennington and A Primrose from England
by Edward Hopley, were loaned
to the National Gallery of Victoria
for its blockbuster exhibition Exiles
and Emigrants: Epic Journeys to Australia
in the Victorian Era. Alexandra Fountain
and Monsteria were selected for inclusion
in a retrospective exhibition presented
by the Art Gallery of New South Wales;
Margaret Preston: Art and Life, and joining
the National Gallery of Australia’s
travelling exhibition, Grace Cossington
Smith: A Retrospective Exhibition, was the
Gallery’s own Door into the Garden. At
an international level, Bendigo’s 2003
acquisition The Young Family travelled
to New Zealand’s City Gallery Wellington
to be included in the exhibition Patricia
Piccinini — In Another Life. The exhibition
was Wellington’s contribution to the
New Zealand International Arts Festival.
Bendigo Art Gallery was pleased to be
able to support these and other exhibitions
through the loans provided
We gratefully acknowledge the continued
efforts of our dedicated volunteers
throughout the year for both curatorial
and program support. The generous
contribution of the Friends, Guides and
security volunteers is beyond value and
much appreciated. It is through their
assistance that we have been able to
deliver the breadth and diversity of
exciting exhibitions and programs during
2005–2006. We look forward to facing
fresh challenges together in the year
to come.
EDUCATION
REPORT
FRIENDS’
REPORT
2005–2006 saw the Education Program
continue to progress with a range
of rich student learning programs,
after school art classes, holiday workshops
and Professional Learning Programs
for teachers. Last year we farewelled
Peter Hughes, who returned to full-time
teaching at Catholic College Bendigo
after more than a year in the position.
Peter contributed great enthusiasm
to the Education Program and introduced
a range of community programs and
activities for younger students in addition
to being a familiar and friendly face in
the Gallery. Peter will also be remembered
for successfully coordinating the Just for
Kids event on Sunday 21st August, 2005.
During the second semester of 2005,
we introduced Paula Scoble to the after
school art classes and holiday programs.
An energetic Diploma of Education
student, Paula ably managed both
programs. Paula was successful in gaining
part-time employment at Golden Square
Secondary College for 2006 and we now
welcome both Paula and Peter to the
Gallery as dedicated visiting teachers
instead. The after school art classes
and holiday activity participants were
then introduced to the friendly face
of Pru Stone in early 2006, before a
permanent replacement was appointed.
We were pleased to introduce Joy Tatt,
an artist and experienced instructor,
who brought a strong foundation of
drawing skills to the after school art
classes program.
At the end of 2005, the funding for the
current round of the Strategic Partnerships
Program, under which Helen Attrill
was employed, ended. Under the new
requirement of funding being based
around specific programs, the Gallery was
fortunate to receive funding to commence
two projects over the next triennium.
Helen Attrill continued as education
officer to implement the projects
Galleries Unearthed and The Language
of Photography. This has involved
designing and presenting student and
teacher programs, producing curriculum
materials and addressing the new learning
outcomes being implemented statewide,
including Victorian Essential Learning
Standards, Victorian Certificate
of Education and Principles of Learning
and Teaching.
Recently the Gallery appointed Margot
Feast to the education department.
Margot has a diverse teaching background
with art teaching experience in both city
and country schools, at her own art based
business and in an art school in China.
Margot has also experienced working
creatively with students with special needs
and Indigenous students. One of the
highlights of her career was working with
young Tiwi students in Milakapiti
in the Tiwi Islands. Margot has been
a welcome addition to the Gallery
and has quickly adapted to the needs
of our education audiences.
The past year has been an extremely
busy and successful one for the Friends.
In November 2005, thanks to the
seven garden owners who opened their
gardens for Private Gardens, we held
our most profitable garden tour to date.
In March 2006 we conducted a wine
and cheese tasting evening in the gardens
of Bishopscourt. Together with the
Christmas/Easter raffle, these functions
provided funds to allow the Friends
to purchase 12 new Thonet chairs needed
by the Gallery.
In addition, the Friends have instituted
a bursary for a Year 12 student at each
of the three Bendigo secondary colleges;
Bendigo Senior Secondary College,
Catholic College Bendigo and Girton
Grammar School. The bursary will be
paid at the end of Year 11 for use by the
students in Year 12. The initial bursaries
will be paid in 2006.
As well our usual practical support
with mail outs, security and supervision,
the Friends this year provided ‘High Tea’
for the screening of My Fair Lady at
the Star Cinema, an event which was
part of the Cecil Beaton: Portraits exhibition
program. This was greatly enjoyed
by patrons and Friends.
In 2005–2006 the Board of Management
of Bendigo Art Gallery covered the cost
of buses for the Friends, Gallery Guides
and volunteers to visit major exhibitions
at the National Gallery of Victoria.
In 2005 we visited the Dutch Masters,
and in 2006 the Pissarro exhibition.
Both trips were greatly enjoyed and
much appreciated.
The number of Gallery members who
assist the Friends with various activities
continues to grow, and the group also
enjoys a variety of social activities.
The Friends’ Mini Tour program is now
an integral part of the Gallery’s annual
program. The Friends greatly appreciate
the strong support received from local
artists. In 2006 we used the lecture theatre
at the La Trobe University Visual Arts
Centre on View Street on a number of
occasions. For this we thank the gallery’s
curator, Carolyn Dew.
Gallery staff continue to provide
the Friends with invaluable support.
I would like to take this opportunity
to thank Registrar Jacqui Woolf, and
technical staff Neil Godfrey and Noel
Hourigan for their practical assistance
with Mini Tours and other functions,
the curatorial staff Tracy Cooper-Lavery,
Leanne Fitzgibbon and Tansy Curtin
for the organisation of speakers for
the Mini Tour program, receptionist
Carolyn McMillan who is an enthusiastic
promoter of the Friends’ activities,
and director Karen Quinlan for her
ongoing support.
Finally, I would like to express my
appreciation for the work of the executive,
Vice President Marga McEvoy, Secretary
Betty Stuart, and Treasurer Annie Clark,
the Committee and all the volunteers
whose company makes all our activities
most enjoyable social occasions.
GUIDES’
REPORT
EXHIBITION
SUMMARIES
This year commenced with a relaxed
lunch in the garden of my home, away
from the usual formality of monthly
meetings, enabling guides to form ongoing
friendships with like-minded people.
The Class of 2006, comprising 16 new
trainees, was also welcomed giving them
the opportunity to get to know the Guides.
Special thanks must go to Glenys Anthony
and Merle Hall for their outstanding
contribution in working with the
enthusiastic group of new trainees.
With such a large intake this year,
a handful of dedicated Guides have
shared their expertise in relation
to particular aspects of the collection
to assist with training.
Ongoing education for established Guides
is essential at Bendigo Art Gallery, with its
growing collection focussing on Australian
contemporary works. We enjoy the
challenge this development demands and
appreciate the support provided by Gallery
staff in familiarising us with exciting new
arrivals. Old favourites are revisited, when
time permits, at the conclusion of monthly
meetings, as individual Guides provide
short presentations of their choice. Research
papers given by Guides are a regular feature
and this year showcased John Percival,
Albert Tucker, Grace Cossington Smith
and Russell Drysdale, to name a few. With
the help of Christopher Willson, Guides
are now using PowerPoint technology
and enjoy the extra dimension this brings
to our presentations. An excellent paper
exploring the Boyd family dynasty was
most informative and entertaining.
We all enjoyed Karen Quinlan’s account of
her whirlwind visit to the Venice Biennale,
which provided a fascinating insight into
the international art world. We also enjoyed
having artist Denis Chapman speak to the
Guides about his current practice and his
work in our collection, which will better
enable the Guides when discussing his work
with the public.
Our roster coordinator plays an important
role in ensuring the availability of a daily
tour. Working with Gallery staff, we aim
to provide the best possible experience
for visitors. We welcome the innovation
of a laser pointer to assist with explaining
artworks. Our diary records indicate
we have had local and interstate visitors,
as well as international visitors from
America, South Africa, Canada, Europe
and New Zealand in the past year. While
not all visitors opt for a guided tour,
it is always an enjoyable encounter
to speak with them and hear their
enthusiastic comments, as invariably they
are impressed by the Gallery’s collection.
The Designs for a Modern World: Charles
Rennie Mackintosh and Cecil Beaton:
Portraits exhibitions, coinciding with
the Commonwealth Games, involved
Guides giving special introductory tours
and also assisting with security and ticket
collection. During the year a variety of
community groups and schools requested
special tours. Although this necessitates
quite a good deal of preparation,
the small team of Guides who provide
this service enjoy the experience. Children
in particular are very responsive and with
their natural creative ability are quick
to grasp an understanding of the art
presented to them. As Picasso said ‘Every
child is an artist. The problem is how
to remain an artist once he grows up.’
Thank you to Margaret Bowden, President
of the Friends, who organised bus trips
to the National Gallery of Victoria to view
the Dutch Masters as well as the Pissarro
exhibitions. The Guides also enjoyed a trip
to the Castlemaine Gallery where the
Director, Peter Perry, conducted a tour
of the collection, followed by an introduction
by Curator Kirsten McKay to the Sybil Craig
exhibition. We thank them for their warm
hospitality. Our plans for the future include
an excursion to the recently re-opened and
refurbished Heide Gallery, as well as a visit
to Coliban Garden in Lauriston.
It has been my pleasure to be associated
with Bendigo Art Gallery this year as
Senior Guide. I wish to thank the great
team support, which will no doubt ensure
that 2006–2007 will be another successful
year of guiding.
Holy Holy Holy
A Flinders University Art Museum
Touring Exhibition
4 June – 10 July
Holy Holy Holy focused on the enduring
influence of Christianity on Australian
Aboriginal people through contemporary
visual art, contextualised by historical
material. In this exhibition 13 artists
explored both the positive and the
negative aspects of the influence of
Christianity. Each artist has a unique
perspective on the way that Christianity
impacted on Aboriginal life and culture.
Artists represented include Ian W Abdulla,
James Cochran, Nici Cumpston, Julie
Dowling, Jarinyanu David Downs, Irene
Mbitjana Entata, Christine McCormack,
Tjangika Wukula (Linda Syddick)
Napaltjarri, Trevor Nickolls, Michael
Riley, Darren Siwes, Alan Tucker
and Harry J Wedge.
The End of the Rainbow
4 June – 14 September
This exhibition delved into Victoria’s
golden past with a selection of work
from the Gallery’s permanent collection.
Featuring works on paper and sculpture
that recorded the impact of the gold rush
on the development of Bendigo, the
exhibition included the recent acquisition,
George Rowe’s The End of the Rainbow,
Golden Square, executed in 1857. The
End of the Rainbow included drawings,
lithographs, engravings, watercolours and
photographs by artists such as Alexander
Fox, ST Gill, Charles Travers Mackin,
Nicholas Chevalier, John Northcote and
Nicholas Caire. Of the sculptures included
in the exhibition, the Original Model for the
Gold Jubilee Memorial Statue, Bendigo
was a feature, the completed statue being
situated on Pall Mall.
Twentieth Century
4 June – 14 September
A major exhibition from the permanent
collection spanning all of the Gallery’s
temporary exhibition spaces, Twentieth
Century was a comprehensive overview
of artworks from 1900–1999 and included
selected paintings, sculptures, work
on paper and ceramics rarely seen on
permanent display.
A highlight of the display was the first
viewing of the epic work Journey of the
Sun by Leonard French. The work was
presented to Bendigo Art Gallery in 2003
by Commonwealth Custodial Services
under the Cultural Gifts Program.
Measuring more than 11 metres in length,
Journey of the Sun depicts literally the
sun’s journey through a landscape of the
seasons. Reading the work from left to
right the spring landscape features fish
swimming, birds rising from the earth
through vines, flowers and trees towards
the sun and a rainbow.
A Metaphysical Edge
Wendy Stavrianos
A Bendigo Art Gallery Exhibition
24 September – 30 October
Wendy Stavrianos is a locally based
Australian artist who has maintained
her distinctive vision since her first solo
exhibition in 1967 at Princes Hill Gallery
in Melbourne. In 2005 A Metaphysical
Edge presented the artist’s recent work
accompanied by earlier related images
that reinforced the artist’s use of
symbolism, metaphor and the human
presence within the landscape.
Since 1993 Stavrianos has paid homage
to Jean François Millet ‘s celebrated
work The Gleaners (1857) to convey
her environmental concerns. Stavrianos
states her images are ‘holding onto what
is disappearing, what is in the process
of being lost to us all and to future
generations.’ The paintings from her
recent series Silent Fields -The Gatherer
are metaphysical spaces for celebration
and contemplation.
In the Spotlight: Theatre design
by Steven Butler
A Bendigo Art Gallery Exhibition
24 September – 23 October
This exhibition examined the creative
process of theatre design, allowing
visitors to step behind the scenes of
stage production through the recent
work of Steven Butler. Originally from
Bendigo, Steven Butler’s fascination with
costume design led to further studies
at the National Institute of Dramatic
Arts (NIDA) Sydney. The exhibition
investigated the design process from initial
concepts and drawings for costumes and
characters to complex three-dimensional
models of actual stage sets for theatre
productions.
Robert Jacks Drawing Prize
A Bendigo Art Gallery Exhibition
5 – 27 November
In its fourth year, the Roberts Jacks Drawing
Prize again highlighted contemporary
drawing practice in Australia. Renowned
artist Robert Jacks generously provided
the first prize of $5,000. The prize attracted
entries from leading and emerging artists
across Australia. The winner of the 2005
prize was Michael Zavros, a Queensland
based artist.
Robert Jacks is recognised as one of
Australia’s most significant and accomplished
abstract artists. Born in Melbourne in 1943,
Jacks trained in sculpture at Prahran TAFE
and painting at RMIT. He has held more
18 19
than 50 solo exhibitions throughout this
career and been included in numerous group
exhibitions. Having lived and exhibited in
New York and Canada from 1969-1978, Jacks
now lives and works in central Victoria.
My Country
Abstract Interpretations
of the Australian Landscape
From the La Trobe University Art Collection
29 October – 30 November
My Country brought together the work
of artists whose careers span a period
of more than forty years. These include
revolutionaries, like Fred Williams,
to the more contemporary, such as Judy
Holding. The artists’ aims are to reflect
their response to the environment,
while at the same time capturing the
‘essence’ of the Australian landscape.
The exhibition offered a concise overview
of a continuing genre central to Australian
art, and presented uniquely different
views, interpretations and processes
towards landscape painting.
Cecil Beaton: Portraits
A National Portrait Gallery
Exhibition, London
10 December – 26 March
Sir Cecil Beaton was one of the most
inventive and outstanding portrait
photographers of the twentieth century,
renowned for his images of elegance,
style and glamour.
Celebrating the centenary of his birth
in 1904, Cecil Beaton: Portraits brought
together more than 150 portraits from
the five remarkable decades of Beaton’s
career. His subjects from the worlds of
fashion, art and celebrity included Greta
Garbo, Coco Chanel, Marilyn Monroe,
Marlon Brando, David Hockney, Twiggy
and Andy Warhol. From the Sitwells in
the 1920s to the Rolling Stones in the late
1960s, definitive portraits of twentieth
century celebrities were shown alongside
more sombre works from Beaton’s time as
a war photographer. Bendigo Art Gallery
was pleased to be one of only two venues
in Australia to host this exhibition.
On Loan, Private Collection
of Australia’s key artists of the latter
20th century from a private collection
in Melbourne. Following the exhibition,
these works were interspersed throughout
the Gallery’s permanent collection display
on long-term loan. Artists include Brett
Whiteley, Ian Fairweather, Russell
Drysdale, Arthur Boyd, John Perceval,
Ralph Balson, Godfrey Miller and
Fred Williams.
Designs for a Modern World
Charles Rennie Mackintosh
Presented in partnership with Glasgow
Museums, Scotland
4 February – 9 April
Bendigo Art Gallery was the exclusive
Australian venue for an exhibition
featuring the work of acclaimed Scottish
designer, Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
The exhibition included international
works on loan from the collection of
Glasgow Museums, Scotland, together
with a select number of loans from public
and private collections within Australia.
A highlight of the exhibition was the
magnificent ‘Hill House’ writing desk
designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh
in 1904. Mackintosh is one of the most
celebrated designers and architects of
his generation, taking inspiration from
Scottish traditions and blending this with
the flourish of Art Nouveau and simple
Japanese forms.
Made from ebonised oak with mother
of pearl, The Hill House desk was recently
purchased by the Glasgow Museums and the
National Trust for Scotland for just under
£1 million, making it the world’s most
expensive piece of 20th century furniture.
Larger than Life
Work from the Collection
A Bendigo Art Gallery Exhibition
1 – 23 April
An exhibition highlighting super-sized
acquisitions from Bendigo Art Gallery’s
collection. Featuring paintings, sculpture
and work on paper, artists included Andrew
Browne, Christopher Langton, Richard
Larter, Mike Parr and Patricia Piccinini.
To coincide with the exhibition,
Melbourne based South African artist
Christopher Langton installed a giant
spider on the façade of the Gallery.
Langton has exhibited extensively
in Australia and overseas and has been
critically acclaimed for his large scale
inflatable objects, public installations
and sculptures.
David Rankin Works: 1967–2004
This is A Tweed River Art Gallery
touring exhibition, financially supported
by the NSW Ministry for the Arts
and Adrian Slinger Galleries
29 April – 28 May
This survey exhibition of the work
of David Rankin from 1967 to 2004 saw
works drawn from the artist’s studio,
private and public collections. Works
included paintings, drawings and work
on paper. Consisting of 53 paintings
and drawings, this large body of work
offered the viewer a rare opportunity
to develop an understanding of Rankin’s
visual vocabulary and to contemplate the
journey of one artist in his search for truth
through creative expression.
Christopher Beaumont
Still Life Painting
A Bendigo Art Gallery Exhibition
13 May – 18 June
An exhibition of recent paintings by
Melbourne artist Christopher Beaumont.
Beaumont was voted the People’s Choice
winner of the 2005 Arthur Guy Memorial
Painting Prize and awarded the opportunity
to present a solo exhibition at Bendigo Art
Gallery. Beaumont discovered his passion
for painting still life in the final year
of art school and has pursued this branch
of painting consistently since then. ‘Still
Life is the Particle Accelerator of painting
where the artist gets to examine reality
itself.’ says the artist. His exquisite still
life works of vegetables and fruit are a
testament to his passion for the meticulous
glowing still life works by 17th century
Spanish masters.
Tainted Love: Contemporary
developments in landscape
A Bendigo Art Gallery Exhibition
3 June – 23 July
The landscape has been a much-loved
and utilised subject for artists throughout
the centuries. Tainted Love drew together
the work of five contemporary Australian
artists who share an interest in the landscape
but who treat their subject matter in new
and unique ways. Dale Frank, Rosemary
Laing, Chris Langlois, Janet Laurence and
John Wolseley, all of whom have had their
work acquired by Bendigo Art Gallery in
recent years, were included in this exhibition.
Juxtaposing the unconventional and
unpredictable, unorthodox comparisons
and commentaries were encouraged.
Conventional representations of
the landscape were not apparent with
the works selected; instead imaged created
frisson and fissure, poetic narratives,
momentary vignettes or disturbing
relationships between people, place and
history - a ‘tainted’ love of the landscape.
The exhibition included paintings,
photography and work on paper.
Family Portraits
Harold Cazneaux & Cecil Bostock
A Bendigo Art Gallery Exhibition
24 June – 6 August
This exhibition presented the work
of two of Australia’s most renowned
and influential early 20th century
photographers; Harold Pierce Cazneaux
Hon. FRPS (1878–1953) and Cecil
Westmoreland-Bostock, (1884-1939)
Two of the founding members of the
Sydney Camera Circle in 1916, Cazneaux
and Bostock pledged to advance support
and interest in pictorial photography.
Both photographers often worked
with their own children and other family
members as their favourite models for
studio and commissioned work. Family
Portraits included several well known
images of children and family such
as Cazneaux’s The Bamboo Blind (1915)
reproduced in the first issue of the
influential magazine The Home in 1920 as
well as private family images. Comprising
works from the Bostock and Cazneaux
family collections, the exhibition included
works not previously seen in public.
DIRECTORS’
REPORT
STATEMENT
OF FINANCIAL
PERFORMANCE
Your Directors submit the Financial
Accounts of the Bendigo Art Gallery for
the year ended 30 June 2006.
The names of the Directors in office at the
date of this report are listed on page two.
The principal activities of the Gallery
during the year were conducting the
Bendigo Art Gallery. There has been no
change in the nature of these activities
during the year.
The profit amounted to $359,304.
The Gallery’s incorporation documents do
not provide for the payment of dividends.
No Director since the end of the previous
year has received or has become entitled
to receive, a benefit by reason of a Contract
made by the Gallery with a Director
or with a firm of which the Director
is a member or, with a company in which
the Director has a substantial interest.
Review of operation and results of operations
of the Gallery over the financial year ended
30 June 2006 are considered satisfactory.
No matters or circumstances have arisen
since the end of the financial year which
significantly affected or may significantly
affect the operations of the company,
the results of operations, or the state of
affairs of the company in financial years
subsequent to the financial year ended
30 June 2006.
The likely developments in the operation
of the Gallery during the next financial
year include the ongoing purchases of
works of art.
The operations of the Bendigo Art Gallery
are such that they are not materially
effected by environmental regulations.
On 6 June 1985, the Bendigo Art Gallery
became entitled to half the capital and
income of the Estate of the late R.H.S.
Abbott. These funds known as The
Abbott Bequest are under the control
of the executors of the Estate. An income
distribution of $113,000 was brought
to account during the year ended 30 June
2006. The capital of the Estate is not
included in these accounts.
During the year ended 30th June 2003 the
Bendigo Art Gallery received a bequest
totalling $2,681,751 from the Estate of
Grace Adeline Oddy Craig. It is stated in
the Will that the purpose of the bequest
is to establish a permanent trust fund
to be used exclusively for the purpose
of purchasing paintings or drawings of
considerable merit to become the property
of the Bendigo Art Gallery, such purchases
being subject to the approval of the
Gallery Director and the Committee of
Management. The Bendigo Art Gallery
has resolved to maintain the corpus of
the bequest at its current level and utilise
the income earned from the corpus to
purchase works of art.
No indemnities have been given or
insurance premiums paid, during or since
the end of the financial year, for any
person who is or has been an officer or
auditor of the Bendigo Art Gallery.
No person has applied for leave of Court
to bring proceedings on behalf of the
Bendigo Art Gallery or intervene at any
proceedings for which the company’s
a party for the purpose of taking
responsibility on behalf of the Bendigo
Art Gallery for all or any part of these
proceedings. The Bendigo Art Gallery
was not party to any such proceedings
during the year.
