TV over IP Services
With TV over IP, upc cablecom gives hotels, hospitals, service
providers and companies new ways of receiving free TV channels
as a customised programme package and to broadcast them
further within the internal network. All upc cablecom free-to-air
TV programmes are also available via IP for corporate customers;
the programmes are transferred as IP multicast streams to
the customer via optical fiber cables. The programmes are
transferred continuously which means that channels can be
switched without a delay, just as in analogue television.
The optical fiber connection, with high uptime and stability
levels, can be used simultaneously for data and voice services.
TV over IP services are available in two versions: Broadcast for
coax networks and Multicast for local data networks (LAN).
The TV programmes are fed into the local coax network according
to the DVB-C/DVB-T standard. For this purpose, the televisions
must be equipped with a DVB-C/DVB-T tuner. If the existing
televisions do not have a DVB-C tuner, then replacement with
the newest generation HD-ready and energy-efficient televisions
is recommended.
In addition to upc cablecom's range of programmes, in-house
content such as a local information channel can be fed using an
IP-MPEG stream. Once separated from the higher level upc
cablecom HFC network, the range of the internal HFC network
can be used freely. The internal coax network can thus also be
used for additional applications such as a local data network
(LAN).
In this service, the TV programmes are broadcast as analogue
PAL signals or as digital DVB-C/DVB-T signals over existing coax
cables. No set-top boxes are required in the hotel or hospital
rooms. As is the case today, the TV programmes are broadcast
over the internal hotel or hospital coax network using TV Broadcast.
The existing internal coax network need neither be adapted
nor replaced.
In this service, the TV programmes are broadcast as IP multicast
streams or - with an IPTV solution - via an internal LAN infrastructure.
With this option, the TV programmes are directly accessible as IP
multicast streams at the service access point. The IP multicast
streams serve as a feed for an in-house TV solution, such as for
implementation on a coax network or as a feed for an IPTV
solution.
The TV programmes are fed as analogue PAL signals into the
local coax network. This option is the ideal complement to the
upc cablecom range of analogue programmes. The range of
analogue programmes can thus be specifically enhanced by
programmes in the digital range. This option should be used for
up to ten additional programmes (maximum). Along with the
optical fiber connection, the existing coax connection must also
be retained.
With an IPTV solution, the televisions are connected to the LAN
via an IP set-top box. The IPTV service is advantageous wherever
additional services such as Internet and Voice over IP (VoIP)
are on offer. IPTV permits greater flexibility in terms of the
integration of additional video services such as Video on Demand
(VoD) and the layout of the user interface. The arrangement
of the programmes and language of the user interface, for
example, can thus be easily changed remotely. IPTV solutions
are not offered directly by upc cablecom. upc cablecom cooperates
with partners who offer IPTV solution.
