Dear Parents,<br />

From the Head of Junior <strong>School</strong>’s Desk<br />

Moving into the final week, it seems that Term 4 should only just have begun.<br />

However, we are well into the process of rounding the year off with reports almost<br />

completed, class placements completed and Speech Night rehearsals almost<br />

completed.<br />

One of our special teachers calls it a day at the end of this year. For Mrs Burns,<br />

teaching has been a passion for the last fifty years. One only needs to walk past her<br />

classroom to witness her devotion to her young charges. She continues to squeeze<br />

every last teachable moment out of these last few days of the year to make a<br />

difference for her boys.<br />

We are blessed to have had Mrs Burns conclude her teaching career at IGS. Having<br />

been coaxed out of a previous retirement, I know that she will remain a close IGS<br />

friend in future years, visiting occasionally and maybe assisting in small periods of<br />

relief work and maybe even leading some performance groups. However, next year<br />

holds other challenges as Mrs Burns embarks on directorial duties in the local <strong>Ipswich</strong><br />

Little Theatre Company. Having been a passion for many years, finally this is the<br />

chance to be able to commit the enormous amounts of time and energy to this other<br />

love alongside Mr Burns.<br />

We will miss Mrs Burns’ energy, enthusiasm, intelligence, guidance, wit and devotion.<br />

She has touched so many in her few short years teaching at IGS.<br />

We will be holding an evening in Mrs Burns’ honour and would be delighted to have<br />

any parents, past students and staff members who would like to wish Mrs Burns well<br />

attend.<br />

After 50 years in the profession, Mrs Shirlee Burns is retiring. Having assisted so many<br />

students, parents and staff, it is now time to celebrate Shirlee’s achievements and wish<br />

her well in her new endeavours.<br />

Speech Night<br />

A reminder of some of the crucial details for Speech Night on Thursday 26 November:<br />

Time:<br />

• Final rehearsals will take place from 5.00-6.00pm (Listed below).<br />

• Doors open to audience members at 6.00pm.<br />

• All boys to report to their teachers in their class seating areas by 6.15pm.<br />

• Commences 6.30pm.<br />

• Aimed to conclude approx 8.15pm.<br />

Dress:<br />

• All students to wear full formal school uniform (without hats).<br />

• Year 4 students to wear ties.<br />

• Year 5 & 6 students to wear ties, trousers and blazers.<br />

P-1 Early Collection:<br />

Parents in Prep and Year 1 should have notified their son’s class teacher by now with an indication if they will be<br />

taking advantage of the early collection opportunity. This will take place in the program following the Headmaster/CEO<br />

Address and as the Year 4-6 award recipients are marshalling. All P-1 boys who are being collected by parents will be<br />

escorted to the paved courtyard between the Auditorium and the Great Hall, beyond the confines of the Auditorium<br />

precinct, where they will await parents under supervision. Please be mindful that the formalities will continue and it is<br />

requested that parents moving to collect their P-1 students do so with minimal noise and disruption.<br />

Should parents wish to drop off passengers directly at the Auditorium, cars will be able to enter the school grounds via<br />

the Darling Street entrance , drop off at the Auditorium and then proceed out to Woodend Road to seek parking.<br />

Giving Tree:<br />

The Giving Tree again will operate. These gifts will be distributed via one of <strong>Ipswich</strong>’s local charity programs. Boys are<br />

asked to bring a small gift, wrapped with the age and whether it is for a boy, girl or adult written on it, for depositing<br />

under the tree. These will be put to very good use when distributed to families less fortunate than our own over<br />

Christmas. This is an opportunity to ensure that our boys are able to think of others at this time. Many boys look to<br />

purchase a small gift from their own pocket money, further reinforcing their generosity. The Giving Tree will be set up<br />

at the front of the Auditorium so that boys can place their gifts under it upon arrival.<br />

Final rehearsals:<br />

The following groups are required to attend final performance rehearsals from 5.00pm:<br />

• Year 6 speakers<br />

• Year 5 Band<br />

• Junior IGS Singers (Choir)<br />

Camps<br />

Camps for Year 4 and 5 are approaching rapidly and boys are being made acutely aware that only students who meet<br />

the behaviour criteria (Levels 1, Bronze, Siler or Gold) will be invited. These camps provide an exciting and enjoyable<br />

social end to the year and enable the boys to develop relationships with other boys beyond their own class as the get<br />

ready to move into the next year level in 2010.<br />

Class Lists<br />

Class lists for 2010 have been compiled over the past two months in consultation with the class teachers. These<br />

teachers have discussed the social, emotional and academic needs of each student and sought to place them<br />

strategically according to these requirements. These lists are now final and each family should receive a letter in the<br />

next few weeks outlining the staffing make up for 2010 and the teacher to whom their son has been allocated. It is<br />

Junior <strong>School</strong> policy not to post whole class lists to families.<br />

Final Day of the <strong>School</strong> Year<br />

Please note that school concludes on Friday 27 November at 12.00pm. While Year 2-6<br />

students usually wear their sports uniform on Fridays due to their participation in sporting<br />

activities in the afternoon, I ask that all boys wear their grey uniforms for this final half<br />

day. Buses will depart in line with the half day allocation.<br />

The placement of the JS Speech Night on the Thursday evening before the conclusion of<br />

school is purposeful in order to finish the year on a crescendo. As the final morning is only<br />

a half day of finishing off and celebrating with students prior to the final Assembly, those<br />

parents of younger boys who wish to keep their son home following the slightly later<br />

evening the night before are more than welcome to do so.


Meanjin Young Writers’ Camp<br />

I would like to commend Patrick Moroney (6C) for attending the recent Meanjin Writers’ Camp at Brookfield. He spent<br />

three days working alongside like-minded peers with a passion for writing and being mentored by writers of the ilk of<br />

Ross Clarke, Simon Higgins, Pat Flynn and Sue Gough. I know that Patrick learned much in this time and look forward<br />

to his next adventure narrative.<br />

Patrick particularly connected with Simon Higgins, whose books often have a Japanese context infused with cultural<br />

information and samurai references.<br />

TUCKSHOP NEWS<br />

On Saturday 14 th November, the ladies from the tuckshop attended the Queensland Tuckshop of the Year Awards.<br />

These Awards are held annually through the Queensland Smart Choices Program, with nominations from all over the<br />

State, which included Primary, Secondary and Private <strong>School</strong>s. Our Tuckshop at IGS was short listed in two<br />

categories, Tuckshop of the year and Convener of the Year. As this was the first time we had entered, to be short<br />

listed was a very proud achievement.<br />

Maureen would like to thank her Staff, the IGS Staff, volunteers and Students for their support over the year and look<br />

forward to next year. To all the volunteers who have helped throughout the year, please note, our Christmas Morning<br />

Tea will be held on Tuesday, 24 th November from 10am. All are welcome. Please RSVP to 3280 1350 by Monday<br />

BASC NEWS<br />

We have recently completed our budget for the 2010 year. This has helped us identify some issues that may affect<br />

the service provided in the near future. One of these being a much needed fee increase to help us with Compliance,<br />

Licensing, wages, running costs, equipment and administration of the Service. It has been 3 years since we<br />

commenced the Before and After <strong>School</strong> Hours Care facility in 2006 and we have not increased our fees during this<br />

time however, the costs of running this service have increased considerably. We advise that as from January 1 2010<br />

our fee for each session will increase. Parents receiving Child Care Benefit will have their fees adjusted accordingly.<br />

The new fee structure for 2010 will be as follows:<br />

29 TH ANNUAL MEANJIN WRITER’S CAMP 2009<br />

On Thursday 5 th to Sunday 8 th November, I attended the 29 th Annual Meanjin Writer’s Camp at the Queensland<br />

Conference and Camping Centre in Brookfield. From the 150 applications, 70 students from Years 6 to 8 were<br />

selected to attend. There were five Authors who attended, Simon Higgins, Pat Flynn, Terry O’Connor, Ross Clarke<br />

and Sue Gough. The Authors ran workshops with about 15 students to the one Author. We had to choose two<br />

writer’s workshops, one for Friday and most of Saturday, and a second Author for another session on Saturday<br />

afternoon.<br />

I chose to attend Simon Higgins’ workshop and boy, was he fantastic!. Firstly, he told us about dramatic openings,<br />

then ways of defining characters, good ways of planning stories and then he talked about the publishing industry. My<br />

second Author was Terry O’Connor, a journalist who has recently published a book celebrating Queensland’s 150 th<br />

Anniversary. Friday and Saturday nights were presentation nights. On Friday, we presented drama acts and then on<br />

Saturday we presented some of our written work. Mr Macknish, whose daughter Emma, also attended the camp,<br />

came on Saturday night. He is currently the President of the Australian Literacy Educators’ Association, Brisbane<br />

Council.<br />

I would like to thank Mr Macknish for suggesting I attend this camp, as it was a fun and great experience for young<br />

budding Authors. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in writing to apply to attend next year (I will be).<br />

FROM THE JUNIOR SCHOOL ART ROOM<br />

Only 1 week to go until the end of another very busy term and indeed, year in the Junior <strong>School</strong> Art room.<br />

Most of the boys are finishing off the last of their projects – Year 6’s are working with recycled materials to make<br />

Robots, the Year 5’s are completing their Kites which they will (hopefully) be flying in the coming week or so, and the<br />

Year 4’s are putting the finishing touches to wire figures and photo frames.<br />

The last batch of Junior <strong>School</strong> Artist of the Month for 2009 have been selected.<br />

These Year 6 boys have not only worked consistently well throughout the year, they have produced some outstanding<br />

Lino Prints and Masks.<br />

YEAR 4-6 INTERHOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVAL<br />

Finally we were able to complete the carnival which was halted due to appalling weather back in March. The beautiful<br />

blue skies and warm water proved a big contrast to the last time we attempted to run the carnival.<br />

Congratulations to all for the friendly, yet competitive, spirit in which the competition was completed. Throughout the<br />

course of the day, Eugene Koorts and Martin Koorts set a total of eight new school age records. Fantastic! No surprise<br />

then when it was announced that they each had achieved their respective age champion goals.<br />

TENNIS NEWS<br />

Queensland Tennis<br />

As part of our ongoing Tennis programme at <strong>Ipswich</strong> <strong>Grammar</strong> <strong>School</strong> we have joined forces with Tennis<br />

Queensland to host a Tennis Hotshots event at our <strong>Grammar</strong> Park Courts. This event is for all our players and will<br />

take place on Friday 20 th November, 2009 at 9am. A bus will transport the boys from the Junior <strong>School</strong> at 8.45am<br />

to the Tennis Centre where Ms Efia Hill from Tennis Queensland, myself and two other Coaches will conduct a<br />

Hotshots Tournament and lunch for all players. There will be prizes and lots of fun for all boys.<br />

Our <strong>School</strong> is the first to offer this programme and it is an excellent chance for each player to be part of. A bus will<br />

return the boys back to school by 12 noon. Best of all, the day is free with lunch provided by our days sponsor<br />

Tonel Holdings and we thank Leanne and Dom for their magic support.<br />

We hope to run this day every term and keep Tennis at <strong>Ipswich</strong> <strong>Grammar</strong> <strong>School</strong> progressing. Please help make<br />

this day big and fun by putting your name down at the Junior <strong>School</strong> Office or by contacting me if you would like to<br />

attend.<br />

Brisbane International Tournament<br />

During the school holidays, Brisbane is hosting the Brisbane International Tennis Tournament with players such as<br />

Andy Roddick, Justine Henin, Anna Ivanovic and Kim Clijsters to name a few. So on Monday 4 th January 2010, I<br />

am planning on taking a bus load of boys who would like to go as well as parents. The bus will leave <strong>Ipswich</strong><br />

<strong>Grammar</strong> <strong>School</strong> at 9am and return at 4:30pm. Cost is $30.00 per person and parents are welcome to attend on<br />

this day as it would be great for all Tennis fans.


Boys will have a day not just to watch matches, but to observe the stars practising up close and gain autographs.<br />

Some of our boys are ball-boying. All those interested, please contact me or register at the Junior <strong>School</strong> Office<br />

before 20 th November, 2009.<br />

JUNIOR SCHOOL PARENT SUPPORT GROUP NEWS<br />

1. A reminder to all parents about this weekend’s family pool party (Saturday 2-5pm with a gold coin donation<br />

per person for entry). Sausage sizzle, drinks and snow cones for sale. If you haven’t yet replied, please<br />

notify Reception ASAP so that the group can include you in their catering considerations.<br />

2. The Junior <strong>School</strong> Support Group is considering producing an ‘IGS Junior <strong>School</strong> Community Directory’.<br />

This directory would showcase businesses owned by families in the Junior <strong>School</strong>, and give each business<br />

the opportunity to promote their business in a different forum.<br />

Firstly, we are seeking interest from our ‘community’ to ensure that this project is viable, and would be<br />

supported.<br />

Dear Parents,<br />

This year the Before/After and Vacation Care children will be adopting<br />

3 families from the Queensland Times Adopt a Family for Christmas<br />

appeal.<br />

The Families that we have chosen to support are:<br />

1. Emergency food hamper for a family of 4<br />

2. Gifts for a Mum, Dad, boys aged 7, 6, 5<br />

3. Gifts for a Dad and boy aged 7.<br />

The children attending vacation care on the 8 th<br />

December will be<br />

participating in a fundraiser – “Be a Rock Star for a day”<br />

Funds raised from this will be used to purchase the gifts for the families<br />

which the children will go shopping for.<br />

We would appreciate any suitable food items to make up our<br />

emergency food hamper.<br />

These can be left in J20 – BASC Room.<br />

The Queensland times will collect the gifts from us and photograph the<br />

children presenting them.<br />

Let’s make it a Christmas to remember – Please support our local<br />

families who are less fortunate than ourselves.<br />

The BASC children and staff thank you for your valued support and<br />

wish you all a very merry Christmas.
