From the Head of Junior School’s Desk
Dear Parents,
Congratulations
Last Tuesday, selected Year 5, 6 and 7 students participated
in the Junior Schools' Invitational Day of Music Excellence
and the following evening concert. Throughout the day, students from all GPS schools
(those with Junior Schools) plus Nudgee Junior College and Toowoomba Prep School
gathered in ensemble groups to prepare and rehearse complex items for the evening
concert... and what an excellent concert it was. It was a privilege to be able to attend and
witness the bonding and teamwork of the boys of rival schools gathering together with a
mutual Performing Arts cause. I get chills each year from the excitement and admiration
at the staggering quality of performances achieved.
Think Pink Week
I thank the Junior School community whole-heartedly for the enormous support of
Think Pink Week. Many students opted to join in the students vs teachers dodgeball
games on Monday. Most boys participated in the free-dress day on Tuesday with a
significant number also ordering hot dogs and slushies. Today, Mr Horridge and I braved
the onslaught of 600 water balloons and with Mr Morgan away at the District Athletics
Carnival, plenty of students took the opportunity to try to slot a goal past School Captain
and Captain of the First XI football team, Jared Hancock. Much merchandise has been
sold also.
Thank you to Mrs Pitty and Jacob Teevan, plus the many Think Pink Ambassadors from
the Middle and Senior Schools for ensuring that the excitement has extended down to
the Junior School. There certainly has been plenty of excitement. (After tomorrow, I can
give my hot pink shirt away to my daughter who is eagerly awaiting it.)
2014 Enrolments
Currently we are finalising enrolments for 2014 and taking further enrolments for 2015.
This is a crucial time as we determine staffing and numbers of classes for next year.
If you know of anyone who is contemplating moving to another school, even in future
years, please refer them to the following information opportunities.
• Tour the school or discuss opportunities at any time;
• Open Day - Thursday 8th August (8.30am - midday)
• Get Set for Prep Night - Thursday 1st August (6.30pm) in the Earle Williams Literacy
Centre, Assembly Rooms
Book Week Parade
The annual Book Week dress-up day will be held on Thursday August 15 along with a
small parade to show off the great costumes. Boys and parents are invited to commence
thinking about book characters and the costume that they may be able to generate for
these books. It is important that the boys choose a character from a book and are able
to bring the book on the day that they dress up. In this way, they will be able to explain
their character and costume to the class more easily.
Sincerely,
David Macknish
Year 3 Book Review
The Giraffe Who Got In A Knot
This is a hilarious story about a giraffe by the name of Cardwell that gets so carried away
with eating delicious the leaves off a camel thorn tree, that he gets his long neck in a knot
and can’t get it out.
When he realises what has happened, he asks other animals if they can help him.
The zebra suggested he sneeze but this doesn’t work. Instead, it blew off the ostrich’s
feathers.
Two elephants try to pull the knot out but poor Cardwell begins to turn blue. The lion roars
to give Cardwell a fright, hoping the knot will undo itself. Fortunately, this works and the
animals celebrate.
Three E thoroughly enjoyed this story and we give it 5 stars.
Junior School Support Group News
GPS Rugby
With the GPS Rugby season well and truly here we need your help.
For parents that are not aware the Rugby support group is allowing the Junior School Support Group to have a Sno Cone
machine operating on the four home fixture matches. As you can imagine this is a huge job and relies on the good will of the IGS
community.
As Saturday is our first home game against GT, we are developing a roster to make sure all times are covered.
We require two helpers per hour from 9.00am until approximately 2:30pm. Your role will be to help make the sno cones and take
the money for them.
If you are able to help can you please register you availability with Sandra Beckett.
Fathers' Day
As Fathers' Day is fast approaching on 1 September, we need helpers for the fathers' day stall which we are holding over two
days, 28 and 29 August.
If you have any availability from 10:00-11:00 on either of these days, can you please let me know. If we can please get 4 or 5
helpers on both days that would be fabulous!
Thanks
