17.3.1 Selection Process<br />

17.3 – Special Assignments<br />

Police Officers who meet minimum qualifications set by the Chief of Police shall be considered for<br />

appointment for a special assignment or position. These special assignments/positions currently<br />

include Detective, School Resource Officer (SRO), Canine Officer, and DARE Officer and may<br />

include additional assignments in the future.<br />

17.3.2 Special Assignments<br />

Police Officers who are interested in being considered for a special assignment must meet the<br />

minimum requirements. These minimum requirements may include:<br />

17.3.3 Posting<br />

At least three years of patrol experience<br />

A sincere interest in the position<br />

No serious disciplinary problems<br />

When the Chief of Police has established a need or an opening exists for a special assignment<br />

position, a job opening shall be posted in a conspicuous location within the Police Department<br />

facility and emailed to all Police Department personnel. The posting/email shall inform<br />

prospective candidates of the following:<br />

Minimum qualifications, as applicable<br />

Date and time written notification must be submitted to the Chief of Police<br />

Brief job description<br />

Those qualified candidates who have notified the Chief of Police in writing and/or via email will be<br />

advised of the date and time of the interview(s). The Chief of Police shall interview and evaluate<br />

each candidate according to criteria in the posting. Additional Police Department personnel,<br />

including supervisors and officers currently in the special assignment, may participate in the<br />

interview process. The Chief of Police will then rank each of the candidates according to their<br />

interview and will select the top candidate from that list.<br />
