Dispatch personnel shall be instructed to assign top priority to all<br />

domestic violence calls, including those that involve or appear to involve<br />

a police officer of any law enforcement agency.<br />

Dispatch personnel shall document all domestic violence calls received<br />

that involve, or appear to involve, a police officer and immediately notify<br />

the on-duty supervisor, regardless of the involved officer’s jurisdiction.<br />

Dispatch personnel shall prepare and preserve documentation of the<br />

facts and circumstances of the call, including the call recording, for use in<br />

potential criminal or administrative investigations.<br />

Upon arrival on the scene of a domestic violence call/incident involving a<br />

police officer, the primary patrol unit shall notify the Dispatch Center and<br />

request a supervisor be sent to the scene, regardless of the involved<br />

officer’s jurisdiction. In the event that a supervisor is not on duty, an offduty<br />

supervisor shall be contacted as soon as possible.<br />

A supervisor shall report to the scene of all police officer domestic<br />

violence situations, regardless of the involved officer’s jurisdiction. The<br />

on-scene supervisor shall assume command and ensure that the crime<br />

scene is secure.<br />

When an officer is arrested, the supervisor shall relieve the accused<br />

officer of his/her service weapon regardless of whether the officer is a<br />

member of the responding Police Department. Any other firearms shall<br />

be handled in accordance with Directive 14.2.4(A)(5).<br />

When a domestic violence call involving a police officer does not result in<br />

an arrest, the on-scene supervisor shall submit a written report<br />

explaining any and all reasons why an arrest was not made or a warrant<br />

not sought.<br />

In responding to domestic violence situations where both parties involved<br />

are police officers, standard domestic violence response and<br />

investigation procedures should be followed. After probable cause and<br />

primary aggressor are determined, an arrest should be made and the<br />

service weapon(s) of the accused officer(s) shall be confiscated.<br />

In responding to domestic violence situations where the victim is a police<br />

officer, standard domestic violence procedures should be followed.<br />

The responding supervisor shall notify the accused officer’s supervisor,<br />

regardless of jurisdiction. In the event that the reported incident involves<br />

the Chief of Police, the supervisor shall immediately notify the individual<br />

in government who has direct oversight over the accused.<br />
