or immediate family member for assistance.<br />

Do not attempt to give first aid without securing the canine first unless it appears the<br />

canine officer’s life is in danger. If first aid appears to be necessary and the canine is<br />

being aggressive, it will be secured by any means possible.<br />

Rules for Department Employees<br />

No officer or civilian will strike a canine officer or engage in any horseplay. You must<br />

remember that the canine has been trained to protect the officer with its life. No officer or<br />

civilian employee will do any of the following:<br />

Strike or attempt to discipline the canine<br />

Tease or agitate the canine in any way<br />

Give the canine any type of command<br />

Feed the canine without permission<br />

Enter the canine vehicle while the canine is inside the vehicle<br />

Attempt to remove the canine from the canine vehicle or area of confinement without<br />

the knowledge and permission of the canine officer<br />

K. Canine Care<br />

The canine officer is responsible for keeping the canine in such physical condition that the<br />

canine is able to perform the duties expected. The canine officer will be allowed the<br />

necessary time to do the following canine care and maintenance:<br />

The canine will be groomed as needed<br />

Daily examination of the canine will include eyes, ears, mouth, nostrils, feet and<br />

general body condition<br />

Nails will be clipped as needed<br />

The canine officer will clean his/her yard of waste no less than weekly<br />

The canine will be kept on a routine daily feeding schedule. The canine will be<br />

provided fresh water at all times. Water and food bowls will be cleaned daily.<br />

The canine will be bathed as needed<br />

The canine will be treated for parasites as needed<br />

All medications will be dispensed as directed by an approved veterinarian<br />

While off duty and at the canine officer’s residence, the canine will be kept secure at all<br />

times. The City will provide an outdoor kennel as well as an indoor air crate for the canine<br />

to be used at the residence.<br />

Veterinarian care will be handled on an as needed basis. The canine officer will have a<br />

complete physical of the canine completed annually. The immediate supervisor on duty<br />

will be notified if the canine is too ill/injured to work. If emergency veterinary care is<br />

needed, the canine officer will take the canine to the proper veterinary facilities. Any<br />

expense for such emergency veterinary care shall be documented and forwarded to the<br />

Finance Department.<br />

L. Canine Cruiser<br />

A specially equipped patrol vehicle will be provided to the canine team. The following<br />

modifications will be made:<br />

The vehicle will be equipped with front and rear license plates with the printing “K9”<br />
