MOVE in Ministry
Community Work Day
Join us on Sunday, October 14 for an All Church Community
Workday. In collaboration with over fifteen ministry partners, our
congregation will engage in service projects throughout Houston.
Jesus himself did the majority of his work out and about in his
community. Not inside a church but on a roadside, on a boat, or
a mountainside. He wore his work clothes and he spoke simply
and kindly. And if you look at the work he did, it was personal—it
affected folks in a real and lasting way.
More than just a Sunday event, St. Luke’s All Church Work Day is
an invitation for us to grow into a new way of life and become the
Christian community God has called us to be.
“For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good
works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.”
Ephesians 2:10
Sunday, October 14th, 12-3:30 p.m.
Wear your work clothes to worship.
Dinner with the King
Continued from Cover
dinner with the king cards. Read the rules!” The
man responded that the cards weren’t actually free,
but rather that he had paid for them himself. And
he showed them the holes in his hands and his feet.
And, he said, he was able to give away the cards
because he was, after all, the King’s son, part of the
royal family himself. It was his prerogative to let in
whomever he pleased.
Most people just walked away, shaking their heads
in disbelief. But some people took the cards, walked
across the drawbridge, down the long majestic
corridor, and into the royal dining room. These folks
had a marvelous feast, sat side by side with the king,
and shared both wonderful conversation and
heartfelt love.
Now, once these subjects had dinner with the king,
they found themselves changed people. Living up to
the standards of the kingdom was no longer a
burden, but a joy. They found the anger inside giving
way to love, and the lust giving way to respect. And
they now were not just following rules, but living to
please the king, full of joy in his presence. And the
more they ate and spent time with him, the more
they noticed the change. This transformation never
ended.
Come, my friends. Let’s have dinner with the king. It
is already bought and paid for.
A portion of all proceeds benefits Pure Sound
Youth Choir’s tour fund (San Francisco 2013!)
and scholarships. My Cup Runneth Over
Please plan to be with us each Sunday beginning
October 21 as we discover how our lives are amazingly
and remarkably blessed.
Sunday, October 21, 4-7p.m. in the Hines Baker Room join St. Luke’s Senior Pastor, Dr. Tom Pace, for an
exciting class for visitors and new members of St. Luke’s.
Hear Dr. Pace share St. Luke’s beliefs and portions of his own spiritual journey. Learn St. Luke’s vision, to be
a church where no one walks alone. You’ll be invited to get connected in this ministry and what opportunities
are available. We welcome you to learn, serve and grow as you consider sharing community with us.
Childcare is available, and registration is required.
Join us for Life Together as we share one evening and a meal together. Please call or email Kelly Grimes at
An Unexpected
Blessing
In Galatians 5:6, Paul states that the only thing that
counts is faith working through love. One way to
put your faith to work would be by joining the Life
Celebration Guild. As a member of the Life
Celebration Guild, you will fill an important need
in welcoming guests attending memorial services/
funerals and subsequent receptions. The duties are
not difficult but the impact on the families, guests
and most often you yourself, are great. All you need
is a caring heart, a welcoming smile and a couple of
hours a month.
Long-time member, Neil Stovall attests to the
personal satisfaction he has derived from serving
on the Guild. He says, “My wife, Barbara, and I
volunteered to help with the Life Celebration Guild
and discovered a needed, and much appreciated,
way to provide service to families and friends, some
who are visiting our campus for the first time. Unexpected
benefits have included hearing beautiful
solos, remembrances of outstanding Christians and
inspiring words of hope from St. Luke’s ministers. I
encourage everyone to try it out.”
Rob Landes’ Halloween
Thriller
On Sunday night, October 28, Rob Landes will present
his annual Halloween Silent Movie Thriller at 7 p.m. in
the Sanctuary. This year you are in for a rare treat (No
tricks!).
“The Man Who Laughs” is a 1928 silent horror movie
from Universal Studios. This movie was the follow-up
to Universal’s wildly successful, “The Phantom of the
Opera.” Mary Philbin was the lead actress in both films
and is charming as the blind Dea. Conrad Veidt plays
“The Man Who Laughs,” Gwynplaine.
Having been kidnapped as a child, Gwynplaine underwent
a brutal surgical procedure on him which forced
him to go through life with a grotesque smile smeared
across his face! This film will chill you as Rob plays
the organ accompaniment on our wonderful Schantz
organ.
Dr. Jim Fleming at
St. Luke’s on October 16
Don’t miss an incredible opportunity to hear Dr. James
(Jim) Fleming who will be at St. Luke’s as part of the
Sanctuary series. On Tuesday, October 16 at 6 p.m. in
the Rotunda, Dr. Fleming will present The God Present
in Difficulty, a look at how the intertwining of scripture
and geography paint a powerful picture of faith in the
face of disaster. Come and learn how the faithful of the
past found sanctuary, and how you, too, can cultivate it
in the present.
Dr. Fleming has lived and worked in Israel for many
years and his knowledge of the land, history, geography,
archeology, and theology of the region is unparalleled.
A longtime friend of St. Luke’s, Dr. Fleming regularly
guides our Holy Land trips, the next of which is scheduled
for June 16-29, 2013. After the Tuesday evening
lecture there will be a brief information session for those
interested in this once-in-a-lifetime trip with Biblical
Going to ballgames evoke nothing but fond
memories for me as a kid growing up. This
was a time to be with my dad or to be with
my friends. No matter if there was a win or
a loss for the home team, relationship was
built and strengthened among those I was
with. For the most part, as a child I took for
granted these excursions and their benefits,
but as an adult I see their importance.
Take Me
Out to the
Ballgame
Recently, I have had the privilege of joining
some of our reVision kids on trips to a game.
Houston Rockets, minor league baseball,
Houston Dynamo, whatever the game, they
love it. We laugh and tell jokes. We debate
whether one of our number could do a better job out there on the
court or the field if given the chance. We eat hot dogs and
popcorn. All things that a young teenager should have done by
now with family and friends, but in many cases, this is happening
for the first time for these kids and I’m happy to be there to
witness it. Just a few weeks ago, our crew was invited to come out
to the field for a special recognition. This crew of former rivals
stood in front of the camera as a new family. Over the loud
speaker, we were announced: “St. Luke’s United Methodist
Church, reVision.” They beamed and waved. Wonderful
representatives of St. Luke’s - wonderful representatives of the in
breaking kingdom of God where all things become new.
These days whenever someone says they have a few extra tickets
to a game, I take them. Being gathered together and the kinship
that comes from being gathered is, in part, what affects change in
these kids. For that matter, it is what affects change in any of us.
So if you should find yourself with a few extra tickets to a game,
call me or call over to reVision, we have good use for them.
Blessings!
Justin
All Saints Day
November 4
All Saints Day is a day to remember the saints (as
the New Testament calls all Christians of every time
Caregiver Intensive How Reminiscing and Communicating
Openly Can Enhance the Care-Receiving/Care-
Giving experience
October 27 | 9-11:30 a.m. | R21
Giving and accepting care can create or intensify stress
and negative emotions. At a time when honest communication
can be most helpful, people tend to bottle up
their thoughts and feelings about their present circumstances
and future. This extended workshop will discuss
how reminiscing can be a valuable means for a family to
keep current challenges in perspective and be life-affirming.
You will learn tips on how to create a environment
in which talking about the care/caregiving experience can
be safe and productive, as well as suggestions about how
to introduce difficult or stressful topics for discussion
and tips on how to resolve concerns that are troubling or
uncomfortable to discuss.
Change Is In The Air
October is often associated with the changing of leaves
and the cooling of weather. But did you know it is also
associated with Depression Awareness?
October is Depression Awareness Month, and while one
in ten adults in the U.S. reports experiencing depression,
80 percent do not receive treatment. Sometimes people
do not know the signs or think their emotional changes
will pass.
While the blues tend to be temporary, depression is very
different, said therapist and Nick Finnegan Counseling
Center’s Executive Director, Amy Birchill Lavergne,
M.Ed, LMFT-S, LPC-S. Depression symptoms last for
two weeks or more and include, but are not limited to,
feeling hopeless/helpless, loss of interest in daily
activities, unexplained aches or pains as well as
changes in appetite, weight or sleep.
Nick Finnegan Counseling Center (NFCC) works to
educate Houstonians about depression’s symptoms and
to reduce the statistics this October with In the Rain: a
depression awareness series.
NFCC invites Spire readers to attend Learning In the
Rain: free lecture and book signing with sports legends
Cliff and Nancy Richey on October 4, Talking in the Rain:
a free one-on-one with an NFCC counselor on
