DIRECTIONS: From NJ Turnpike Exit 12 - At the toll booth, bear to the 

extreme right, and keep bearing to the extreme right at the ramp, following 

the signs to Rahway. The off ramp will put you onto Roosevelt 

Ave. You will pass a Holiday Inn on your right. The third traffic light (about 

3/4 mile) is Blair Road (there is a BP station on the SE corner). Make a left onto 

Blair Road, and proceed past the first traffic light, staying on Blair Road into the 

Industrial Park. After about 3/4 mi. from the light, the road narrows, and you will 

cross a freight RR track. Shortly thereafter, the road curves to the right. Stay to the 

extreme right, which is now Port Reading Ave. The Hungarian American Club is 

less than 2 blocks from the initial curve in the road. Make a right turn into their 

parking lot. 

From other routes: NJ Turnpike Exit 11, Southbound GSP Exit 129, 

Northbound GSP Exit 127, follow to Route 9 North. Once on Route 9, 

take Main St.Woodbridge Exit (Route 514). Turn right and go 1 mile to 

railroad overpass. Look for monument. Turn left BEFORE monument 

and continue on Route 514 East. Go to 2nd traffic light and turn right 

onto Port Reading Ave. Club is 1/4 mile on left. 

From 287: Stay southbound, past exit 1 and NJ Turnpike exit, and take 

514 East exit. Stay on 514 until monument in Woodbridge, and follow 

above directions.

CLUB NEWS 

BCCNJ: The Bridge Center of Central NJ (BCCNJ) holds daily open games 

M - F @ noon, Sat @ 12:30 PM and Sun @ 1PM. Separate novice games are 

held on Mon and Thurs @ noon. Our evening game is Wed @ 7 PM. A new 

beginner bridge class is now scheduled for Mon eves running Oct 10 through 

Nov 14. Please contact Stephanie Miller @ 908-963-9116 for further information. 

BRANCHBURG: Our new club is located at 3150 Route 22W at the Dean of 

Chess building in the Shop Rite Shopping Center in Branchburg, NJ. Game 

times are Mon - Fri noon and Sat and Sun at 1:30. We strive to have a warm 

friendly atmosphere in pleasant surroundings. Lite lunch including mixed raw 

veggies and dip, mixed fresh fruit and other healthy snacks included in $9 

entry. Hand records, auto scorers, arranged partnerships (call 732-470-8644 an 

hour or more ahead), lessons available 7 days a week. Seven different ways to 

win free games - your first visit is free. We also have gourmet coffee and teas. 

ESSEX: New ACBL President, Craig Robinson, visited Essex Bridge Center on 

Monday, June 6, as part of his "100 Clubs in 100 Days." Essex welcomed Craig 

with a Brunch and a special Open and 0-499 game. “ Eight Is Enough” Swiss 

Teams 6:30 pm Oct. 28, Nov. 18, Dec 16. “Less than 1000” Swiss Teams Oct 

15, Oct 29, Nov 19, Dec 17. Club appreciation week is Oct 10 - 16, including 

5% gold points


President’s Message

The annual awards banquet was held on June fifth 

at the Pines Manor and, as usual, it was a big success. 

Since we switched to brunches for both the 

awards banquet and annual meeting, our attendance has been 

increasing with each event so I guess we’ve found a formula that 

almost everyone likes. 

Congratulations to all the new Life Masters and the winners of the 

Ace of Clubs and Mini-McKenney contests. I would also like to 

acknowledge (again) Steve Arshan, who was awarded the 

prestigious Bob Ryder award. I used a good part of my last 

message extolling Steve’s qualities as a player and person so I 

won’t repeat myself here. Suffice it to say it’s been a very good and 

well-deserved year for Steve.

Our summer sectional, July 15-17, was another success thanks to 

Debbie Wasik and her team. And speaking of Debbie, she served 

as tournament manager for the District 3 summer regional at the 

Parsippany Sheraton and I understand from Joan Gerard that 

attendance was up 10% over last year. Great work by Debbie, her 

team and a whole bunch of volunteers. 

Finally, I’d like to welcome two new members to the NJBL Board of 

Directors. Pat Berkowitz and Will Ehlers have agreed to fill two 

open positions on the Board and I greatly appreciate their service. 

We are always looking for people who are willing to give their time 

and talents to serve the Unit so I want to personally thank Pat and 

Will and I look forward to working with them.

Novice Corner

SUIT PREFERENCE SIGNALS 

Good players are careful with their card selections when defending 

a hand. Suit preference signals are a potent weapon that they want 

to use to their advantage. 

One way to show your desired suit occurs when your partner leads 

a winner, and dummy has a singleton. You show your suit preference 

by playing a high card to tell partner you prefer the higher of 

the two non-trump suits and a low card to show preference for the 

lower of the two. 

For example: The trump suit is spades, and dummy holds 

♠Kxxx ♥x ♦KJxx ♣Jxxx. Your partner leads the ♥A (showing the 

♥K). You hold ♠xx ♥10532 ♦AQxx ♣xxx. On partner’s lead of the 

♥A play the ♥10, telling your partner to lead a diamond, the higher 

of the two non-trump suits (clubs and diamonds). 

Another common opportunity to show suit preference occurs when 

you lead a card that you know your partner will trump. When you 

lead a high card, you are telling your partner that you want the 

higher of the two non-trump suits returned, and, conversely, you 

lead a low card for the lower ranking suit to be returned. 

For example, suppose spades are trump, and you have ♥Axx, 

♦xxx, and ♣J762. You know your partner can trump clubs so you 

lead a club – but which club? You want your partner to return a 

heart to your ♥A after your partner trumps your club lead. Your 

correct lead therefore is the ♣J saying that you want the higher of 

the two non-trump suits (diamonds and hearts) returned. 

Here’s an example of showing suit preference that my partner and I 

used successfully at a recent sectional. The dummy held ♠Jxxxxx 

♥KQ ♦AQ ♣Qxx, and I was to the right of dummy holding 

♠xx ♥Axxx ♦xxxx ♣1062. The final contract was four spades after 

a no-trump opener and transfer sequence. My partner led the ♣A, 

and I followed with the ♣2. Partner then led the ♣K, and the 

moment had arrived. I was aware that the only other trick I had was 

the ♥A. I played the ♣10 to tell my partner to lead the higher of 

the other two suits. This game was match points and holding the 

opponents to four was a top score for us.

Michael Kopecky and Milan Macura (members of the World 

Championship Junior Team from the Czech Republic), Joe 

Grue, John Kranyak, John Hurd, Aaron Silverstein, Chris 

Willenkin, Roy and Crystal Welland, Kent Mignocchi. David 

and Lisa Berkowitz, Harold Lilie, Adam Grossack, and on 

and on. 

4. Betty Cox and Barbara Clark welcomed youngsters from as 

far away as Germany to the Youth Bridge Tournament on 

Saturday (see page 8). 

5. The generous membership of Unit 140 offered up 25 volunteers 

to provide pairing and hospitality services - not to mention 

those cute stickers!

NABC YOUTH BRIDGE 

The 2011 Youth NABC events in Toronto Canada were open 

to any player 19 years of age or younger with fewer than 

5000 masterpoints. District 3 provided $500 stipends to send 

two players, Amber Lin and Brandon Lin, to compete in this 

event. 

More than 100 young bridge enthusiasts participated in an 

exciting tournament charged with energy and a group of kids 

there to have fun. 

Astronaut Greg Johnson, who piloted 

the final mission of the Shuttle 

Endeavor, spoke to the kids and 

answered questions about bridge and 

space travel. 

District 3’s Pierce Melanson and 

Brandon Lin (right) were tops in the 

Afternoon Card Rook Pairs.

DISTRICT 3 YOUTH BRIDGE 

Betty Cox and Barbara Clark, Youth Bridge Coordinators 

Thirty-one students, ranging in ages from 9 to 16, attended a special 

youth bridge event hosted by District Three as part of our Summer 

Regional in Parsippany, NJ. The participants were from New Jersey, 

New York, Connecticut, and Germany. 

The students feasted on brownies and cookies, while engaging in 

thought provoking as well as creative auctions. The double was used 

frequently by the participants. Many parents remained during the 

game and marveled at the level of engagement in this challenging 

game. At the close of the event the students were given hand 

records to share and discuss with their friends as they enjoyed their 

pizza. Medals were awarded and prizes were given to all.

Many volunteers helped to make this a fun experience for our youth.

common conventions. Leonard Blessing filled in, and Debbie Crisfield 

(right) provided assistance as needed throughout the event.
