I SEE BY YOUR OUTFIT l uJ Y THAT YOU AREAFOLKIE and other Ramblings from the Artistic Director IT SEEMS THAT WHENEVER A FOLK MUSIC concert or festival is reviewed in the paper, that somewhere in the article will be mentioned the "folkies" who attended the event. I usually gather from the words used to describe these "folkies" as new wavers, systems analysts, carpenters, artists, and other normal types having a night out. In fact they all looked like citizens of 1985. The music is scarcely different. Folk was not invented that they are a by promoters in the 1960s, or any other era. lt is a global homogenous, mellow bunch, who live in a different world network of musical streams, flowing together, breaking than that of the journalist. apart, and occasionally drying up, the Perhaps I have been blinded by the ugly fact that I am one, but the truth is that I have a difficult time telling folkies apart from the rest of society. I've heard that it was easier in the past, that folkies once always travelled in quartets, and sported striped shirts and long-necked banjos (in more recent times, Indian print dresses and dulcimers). Still, whenever I find myself in a situation where I suspect there may be folkies present, I have a difficult time identifying them. I can onlyconcludethatthe folkies of the eighties are masters of disguise. The audience at a recent folk concert provided some evidence of this. This group of alleged folkies was variously attired "pop culture" of one generation becoming the heritage of the next. For me, the real glory of folk music is its unpredictability. Folk knows no master. Evolutionary changes come unbidden, and seemingly unlikely strains persist against all odds. This is what we are celebrating at Mariposa's 25th anniversary festival. At Mariposa you can take in an incredible spectrum of different musical styles. With a tour of the grounds you can hear old songs, new tunes, established traditions and developing hybrids. This is the music of 1985. Catch it now; it'll be different by 1986.
