Joni Mitchell, '56 Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young showed up. They didn't want to be stars, they wanted to play, so Bruce Cockburn and I gave over sorne of our workshops and huge crowds came. There were some dark mutterings about big stars and egos; rather sadly I thought. The Red Guard types were trying to crash the gates, screaming flat-head Triumph motorcycle not really knowing what to expect. Recent memories of rioting students and mountains of empty beer cans had somewhat sullied people's impressions of folk music. What I found were new friends; Joni Mitchell, Buffy Ste. Marie, more types of music than I knew existed and more important, the opportunity to stretch my fledgling wings in front of more people than I'd ever seen in one place. The last year I played Mariposa, "Music belongs to the People." Things were getting a little out of hand and after that the festival was never quite the same. So I guess festivals, like people, have their ups and downs. I'm grateful to Mariposa for giving me a place to start and grow, and looking forward to seeing how Mariposa has evolved and grown. In a certain sense, I guess the Red Guards were quite right.
