I,YASN'T
THAT
A TIIYIE!
IT DOESN'T SEEM POSSIBLE
that it is twenty-five years since that
first Mariposa Festival in Leacock's
Mariposa town. I think I have been at
all the festivals since, and I have
enjoyed them all. In several I was a
participant as well as a listener:
introducing a session of traditional
singers, taking part in a discussion
on the nature of folk music, or
hosting a workshoP on Ontario
songs. I remember the pleasure I got
in seeing old Mr. Abbott sing at an
early festival, and hearing Tom Kines
lead the performers in "The Poor
Little Rich Girl of Ontario". ln recent
years I have comPlained about the
lack of my kind of folk songs, but
despite the increasing emphasis on
contemporary music I have still been
able to find sessions that lwanted to
hear.
