Arizona in the Saddle had another great year at the Scottsdale Arabian
Horse Show. In fact, this year was the 60th Annual Show and what a
amazing show it was!!! We were in attendance several days while the
show was going on, keeping magazine racks full (8,500 this year–WOW!).
While in attendance we got the chance to watch the shows, meet people from
all over the world, and check out all of the vendor booths which included
some of the most beautiful and unique shopping available.
This year, we had the pleasure of bringing Mrs. Mary Reagan, owner of
Gordon’s Feed and Seed in South Phoenix for over 40 years (pictured below).
She hadn’t been out to West World in “Years, and I do mean years.” Mary
said as we arrived. We spent the day admiring one gorgeous horse after the
next, picking winners, enjoying tasty treats, and purchasing one of a kind
pieces. Where else can you find vibrating exercise machines and life size
carvings of carousel horses?
Thank you to the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, all its competitors, vendors
and spectators for making this such one of a kind experience!!!
Ranch and
Rodeo Roundup
By Kimmie Dillon
Every weekend this
time of year we see
multiple ranch
and rodeo-related
events. Here are a
few of the highlights
from our arenas and
sorting pens:
The fine folks at Barrett
Jackson produce a nothing short of a
spectacular collector car auction every
January. This year they had record crowds
along with extremely rare automobiles. But
did you know they also hold an Invitational
Bull Riding at West World? On January
16th and 17th, 20 bull riders climbed aboard
some of the rankest bucking bulls from
Dirty Money Cattle Company. Bull Fighters
Sean Moore and Tristan Howard along with
Barrel Man Don “Hollywood” Yates helped
to keep the cowboys safe. Up for grabs at this
event was a cool $9000 in prize money and a
championship Barrett Jackson buckle. Here’s
who came out on top:
Round 1 Ivan Yazzie made a
86 point ride to win 1st place
in Round 1. He broke his
free arm in two places and
still managed to come out
on top!
Hernold John and Wyatt Betony both split 2nd
place with an 85 point ride. Other high
scoring rides were Armando Rodriguez with
“Life without ACTHA, I Don’t Think So”
Jody Childs ACTHA Ride Host
By Jen Wenzel
Noted American author Henry David Thoreau wrote
“If one advances confidently in the direction of his
dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has
imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in
common hours”. And how successful and unexpected
would Jody Childs’ life become, after she attended her
first ACTHA ride in April 2010.
Like many of our sports greatest riders and teachers
Jody grew up on the back of a horse. Mature beyond her
years she started teaching lessons at the tender age of
thirteen at Michel Manesco Stables in Los Angeles, and
taught continuously throughout college. For a number of
years Jody followed her chosen career in banking, while
returning to competition as an amateur on the A Circuit
competing in Hunter/Jumpers. Marriage to a fellow
equestrian and the subsequent birth of her daughter
in 1991 led Jody back to part time work as a riding
instructor. In 1994 Jody started her own training business
“Jody’s Training Stables”, north of San Diego, where she
went on to raise several successful generations of young
hunter/jumpers along with her daughter, whom she
coached for more than twelve years, to numerous hunter
and jumper Championships.
Back in early 2002 Jody’s life took another turn when
she was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. For those
unfamiliar with this disease, it is characterized by chronic
widespread pain and allodynia (a heightened and painful
response to pressure). About this time Jody would test
drive a breed of horse she normally didn’t ride, the
Peruvian Paso Horse. She was searching for low priced
hunter/jumper prospects when she happened upon a
palomino Peruvian colt for sale for $1000 or trade for
tack. She traded her friend’s saddle (must be a good
friend) and $400 for what she thought would be a fun
project. What she didn’t expect, was to fall in love with
this breed. In a short time Jody realized this breed was
the answer she was looking for. With this breed she could
minimize movement in her neck and back and ride pain
free. Jody, like many adult equestrians have turned to
gaited breeds as a way to minimize stress on their joints
and have a smoother ride.
Ever the business woman, and wishing to share her new
discovery of the “smooth ride” Jody started another
business, Del Dios Peruvians, that catered primarily to
adults wanting to trail ride. For eight years she ran both
her training businesses concurrently before deciding that
she would concentrate her efforts on the breed she calls
herself “crazy for”, the Peruvian Paso. In hindsight, it was a
smart move for Jody as she ventures forward in her senior
years. Now 58, she is still comfortable starting horses under
saddle. The temperament and gait of Peruvians has given
Jody a trusted mount for her clients aged 60 and older
who may have never ridden. Not only has she taught many
clients to ride, and ride safely, but many have gone on to
purchase their first horse, a Peruvian.
In April 2010 Jody arrived at her first ACTHA ride in
California with 2 students and 3 horses. Greeting them
was a beautiful park that they had never ridden in, a
leisurely ride between obstacles, safety riders to make sure
no one got lost and a great lunch. Jody rode in the Open
Division, placed second and was hooked. While Jody says
her second and third rides were not nearly as successful as
her first ride, they revealed all her horse’s weaknesses and
made her realize where she needed work in her training.
With ACTHA, she loved being able to ride while coaching
her students and here was a venue she could safely take
her students while refreshing her teaching program. In
2010 she would sometimes take as many as 9 students
at a time to Competitive Trail Challenges throughout
California where together they would work to establish a
partnership, milestones and recognition with their horses.
As Jody says “like everything else with horses you have to
LEARN how to trail ride and that is how I found ACTHA,
but I did it backwards. I started with ACTHA and then
I trail rode. Once, I was out on a trail that stopped and
there wasn’t room to turn around, then the light bulb
went on…oh that’s why ACTHA has back up as an
obstacle! Then I realized real trail riding was like ACTHA,
you go down the trail and then there is something
difficult to negotiate; rocks, a barking dog, a bicyclist,
water, a log etc”.
2011 bought a life changing experience for Jody in “all
things horse”. Tryouts were held in 22 venues throughout
the country and Jody made the final cut of 100 horse and
rider teams selected to go to Texas to compete in the finals
of the ACTHA competition America’s Favorite Trail Horse.
AFTH was filmed and produced by Dan Nyberg of Electric
Picture Company, formerly of the History Channel’s
Monster Quest series, and was aired by HRTV. It was
there that Jody saw horses trained to rear, lay down, pick
up hats, paint pictures and one being ridden with the rider
in the saddle backwards. As Jody says “I was so impressed
with the bond these riders had with their horses. I want to
learn how to get that extra level of communication they
displayed with their horses. In addition, Australian trainer
Guy McLean was there demonstrating how he trained his
horses and I was in awe.”
Following the AFTH finals Jody went home to California
and poured all she had learned into her two year old
homebred Peruvian Amor Del Dios (Mory). In their first
ACTHA ride Mory did Jody proud taking a second place
in the Pleasure Division. Three years ago ACTHA events
in California were far and few between so Jody focused
mainly on Peruvian Breed Shows, enjoying success in the
Musical Freestyle, Gait, Breeding, and Performance classes.
About that time Jody posted on Facebook that she was
looking for extra money to pay for Peruvian Nationals
and ACTHA’s CEO Tom Scrima contacted her. Part of
Jody’s job was to recruit ride hosts throughout the state
and she felt that if she was going to do that she had better
start holding them herself. Jody says “while my first ride
was small, I made $500 and I felt like I got paid to learn
how to host a ride. It gave me the incentive to hold more
events and dream bigger. That’s when I decided that
ACTHA was a great home based business that could
provide me and other ride hosts a nice supplemental
income. I sold that idea to the people I talked with and
started networking. I tell my prospective ride hosts;
here is a business that costs you nothing to start and is a
nationally known successful product. ACTHA provides
the insurance, training and marketing support you need.
You grow along with your business as you understand
your riders and your market. I tell them there are ride
hosts making thousands of dollars in a single weekend
and you can do that too and raise money for a charity of
your choice. You start small and you grow with it.”
In April 2014 Jody learned about an event called Charles
Wilhelm’s Ultimate Super Horse Challenge to be held at
the Western States Horse Expo in Sacramento in June.
It encompassed a great deal of obstacle work along with
ground work, ranch pleasure, trail equitation, dancing
with cows and parade type situations. Jody felt that all
she had done to teach her horse Amor Del Dios (Mory)
ACTHA skills along with his horseshow background
seemed like a perfect fit. Five weeks before the event Jody
went to a clinic with Charles to both qualify and prepare
for the event which was limited to fifteen competitors. At
the clinic Jody learned she would be required to canter,
even though up to this point she had never cantered
her five year old under saddle, as Peruvians rarely are.
Needless to say it began that day.
By the time Jody arrived in Sacramento she had worked
cattle only twice, the “flag” (Cow Trac) twice, and had taken
three lessons from professional trainer Robin Bond who
has extensive experience in these types of events. Much to
Jody’s surprise two weeks out from the competition Robin
informed Jody that she too decided to compete in the
event. Sheepishly she asked Robin if she would coach her a
bit at the event and Robin graciously agreed and Jody tells
me “I was mindful not to abuse that privilege.”
To say Jody was a bit overwhelmed would be an
understatement. Jody said “here I am on my ACTHA
horse and out of the fifteen competitors three of them
were America’s Favorite Trail Horse alumni. These folks
had huge resumes (and belt buckles) from Extreme
Cowboy Association, Western Dressage, Rodeo, Mustang
Makeover and various cattle related competitive events.
Mory was only five and had so much less experience,
along with looking like a little pony compared to the stout
horses in the competition.”
Jody says “it was a magical experience. Mory did
everything I asked willingly and calmly. Not only was his
canter great but I found myself doing the following things
with him that I had never done; ground tie and walk
away (something he only learned a few days prior), canter
over poles, go over successive jumps, shoot a gun, push a
soccer ball with my horses rear end into a net, go through
tires and pool noodles above my horses head, through a
curtain of tinsel 10’ tall, COUNTER CANTER (ARE YOU
KIDDING ME?), canter weave poles with lead changes,
spiral down in the canter into a spin, gallop around the
ring and wave to the crowd.”
How did they do? Jody and Mory were Reserve Champion
to Robin Bond who won the event! Hey everybody!
An ACTHA foundation can take you and your horse to
unexpected success! Obstacle training makes a wonderful
Copper State Trail Riders
January Ride Report
By Jodie Franklin
We started out the year with a ride back in
history. On January 23rd we all meet at
a favorite place to host a ride from, the
Triangle Y Ranch in Oracle. We had the barn area
reserved which had wonderful large turn outs that
the horses loved. The people that run the ranch
are very accommodating and always make sure we
have everything we need.
On Friday we had our usual happy hour and I was
thrilled to see so many new faces gathered around
the fire. As the sun set over the foothills of Mt.
Lemon so did the temperature. The breeze that had
blowing all day also calmed down with the sun.
It wasn’t long before everyone starting retreating
to the warmth of their trailers in anticipation of a
great day of riding.
Through the night I could hear the wind picking
up again and thought we were going to be in for a
windy day and set the ride time back 30 minutes.
However we were blessed in the morning and by
the time we left the wind had calmed down. With
an extra layer on and the sun out it was perfect for
riding. The horses were anxious to get out on the
trail too and by 10 am fourteen riders were headed
out the gate.
Our destination was the historic High Jinks Ranch
located in the foothills of Mt Lemon along the
Arizona Trail. We rode a combination of a cross
country trail and forest road to the American
Flag Trailhead. The American Flag Ranch is on
the National Register of Historic Places having
a post office established there in 1880. The first
postmaster received an annual compensation
of $3.77! It is believed to be the oldest existing
Territorial post office in the state that is still
standing. From this first glimpse into history we
started out on the Arizona Trail.
I have to give a shout out to the trail steward and
all the volunteers that maintain this passage of
the Arizona Trail for it is a joy to ride. We start
winding up hill taking in the scenery as we ride
finding even the switchbacks placed so that they
made the passage easy to ride. As we turn on the
switchbacks we get incredible views of the San
Pedro River Valley and the Galiuro Mountains
rising up behind it. In the distance through a
saddle in the mountains you could catch a glimpse
of snow capped Mt Graham.
Nearing Oracle Ridge a trail shoots off to the left
leading up to High Jinks Ranch. This cluster of
stone buildings clinging to the side of the mountain
immersed in history captivates your imagination.
We tied up our horses as Dan, the now owner of
this historic treasure, greeted us in the courtyard.
He gave us a history lesson of the ranch once
owned by Wild Bill Cody with a tour through the
buildings. Everywhere you turn is a piece of history
with a story to go with it. A hammock stretches
between two trees beckoning you to relax and
enjoy the view. Since it was noon when we finished
touring the ranch it seemed like a great place to
have lunch.
Back in the saddle we rode up on to Oracle Ridge
and followed the Arizona Trail until the junction
with the trail that took us into Campo Bonito
Creek. This is a beautiful ride through here with
two springs to water your horses and both spots are
good lunch stops.
A perfect loop completed we tended our horses
and got ready for the potluck. A campfire was lit
and the table groaned under the weight of all the
delicious dishes that were placed on it. This club
has not only incredible riders but they are also
fantastic cooks! There is nothing like sharing good
food and friendship in the warmth of a fire after a
wonderful day of riding.
Sunday dawned a perfect riding day, after saying
goodbye to a few members who had to leave we
rode out to the American Flag Trailhead again.
This time we went north on the Arizona Trail our
destination Oracle State Park. This section of the
Arizona Trail menders peacefully through the high
desert, perfect for a Sunday ride. We came up to
the Kannally Ranch House from the back where
we could tie up our horses in the trees next to the
old corrals. This beautiful Mediterranean Revival
style ranch house is on the National Register of
Historic Places. A ranger graciously took us on a
tour of the home telling us the history of the family
that lived there. A very eccentric and private family
their history leaves more questions than answers.
Once again everywhere you look is history, a story
to be told. A pleasant afternoon ride took us back
to camp where goodbyes were said until we meet
again on the trail.
A ride back in history, a perfect start to a year full
of promising rides on the Arizona Trail. To join us
“Life without ACTHA, I Don’t Think So”
Jody Childs ACTHA Ride Host
continued from page 15
Ride Host Jody Childs and Mory in the Ultimate
Super Horse Challenge as a two part special airing
on the Charles Wilhelm show in February on HRTV.
Check your local listings for details.
While in Sacramento Jody picked up another horse, a
half Peruvian half Tennessee Walker, aka Tennuvian
that grew up on a cattle ranch and has lineage to Roy
Rogers’ horse Trigger. Originally he was going to be
an investment to train and resell with a client. But that
wasn’t to be. Jody fell in love with the unbroke horse
that couldn’t be tied in the trailer because he had never
been, and wouldn’t let her to touch him or catch him.
After a day of approach and retreat and much to Jody’s
surprise he came up to her and kissed her, just like
Mory does. Well that kiss sealed the deal and Jody told
her client he was no longer an investment horse. Jody
named him Chrome after California Chrome and now
this three year old is her biggest joy, doing tricks such
as taking her hat off, signing his autograph, giving her
more kisses and laying down. He’s not in serious work
or training at this point, just obstacles and fun stuff and
has joined Jody’s family of three purebred Peruvians,
including her mare Candelaria who competes in the
Open Division of ACTHA in California, her gelding
Me Llamo Altanero that she rode is AFTH and her
three year old full brother to Mory, her horse from the
Ultimate Super Horse Challenge.
As a ride host Jody tries to follow the example set by
ACTHA’s President Robin Tilghman who personally
tutored Jody as she held her rides. Besides hosting her
own rides Jody is now part of the team of Ride Host
Service Specialists where she works hard to develop
and mentor ride hosts. Jody says “I am proud to be
part of the team that will answer host calls and help
coach them along the way.”
As a testament to Jody’s perseverance and success in
ride host development, ACTHA rides in California
have grown from just a few in 2012 to over 50 currently
scheduled for 2015. To Jody hosting a multiple weekend
ride can be viewed as being in the equine destination
vacation business. An ACTHA weekend when viewed
as a getaway is super inexpensive! Therefore, with new
hosts I cast the vision of creating an experience that has
their unique personal flavor. ACTHA provides you the
business model and tools, but as Jody says “you put on
the party.”
“Once I saw a shirt that said “Life without Horses, I
don’t think so”, mine should say “Life without ACTHA,
I don’t think so”. ACTHA has enriched my life in so
many ways that I shudder to think where I would be
now if I hadn’t gone to that first ride.”
cleaning and
drying horses
With a Dog Grooming
blower/dryer
For several years now we have used a high
velocity dog grooming blower/dryer for
cleaning dry horses and drying wet horses.
After studying alternatives we elected to go with
a blower only option rather than a combination
blower/vacuum since several people we talked to
who own blower/vacuum combinations said they
found the blower was much more efficient than the
vacuum for cleaning dry horses. They universally
also said the greater the air velocity the more
efficient the cleaning. Some blower only options
come with a second motor where the vacuum bag
would normally be located in the canister. This
second motor greatly increases the air velocity and
therefore the cleaning and drying properties of the
equipment. Our neighbors, who are professional
dog groomers, recommended selecting a double
motor model due to its increased drying and
cleaning efficiency. We selected a Double K
Industries, Challengair Extreme, with a variable
speed control which is sold through dog grooming
supply businesses. The unit we selected is pictured
with this article.
When we first purchased the blower we tested
the equipment’s effectiveness for both cleaning
dry horses and drying wet horses by cleaning 13
dirty horses in 3 ½ hours and then drying a wet
horse in about 20 minutes. Our Black Stallion
RDD Querecotillo is very hard to get clean. The
more you brush him the dirtier he looks. With the
blower we were able to get him clean to the skin
in 15 minutes, including the time it took to get
him used to the noise and the feel of the blower.
Additionally, the massaging action of the blower
stimulates the oil glands in the skin and leaves
the coat with a natural shine. We started with the
lowest setting and then progressed to the highest
setting in three steps. Each increase in power
removed more dirt and shavings. Even though the
intermediate step produces high velocity air with
this double motor unit, the final step removed even
more dirt. This convinced us the extra power was
worth the extra cost.
The blower came with a number of attachments.
We found that the “slotted” attachment worked
best for cleaning a dry horse because it parts a
larger area of hair down to the skin to remove dirt
and debris. We also discovered that the conical
shaped attachment worked best for drying wet
horses because it concentrates the air stream and
creates the greatest velocity. This is the attachment
that professional dog groomers use for drying wet
dogs. Do not point the blower at the horse’s face
because the high velocity air can seriously injure
the horse’s eyes.
After several years of use I have concluded that
using a high velocity dog grooming blower/dryer
for cleaning dry horses and drying wet horses
works very well and is a great time saver. I strongly
recommend purchasing one with two motors for
the increased air velocity it will provide. I also feel
that the small additional cost of the variable speed
control verses the two speed model is worthwhile.
There are several different manufactures and
models to choose from. I am happy with the
Double K Industries, Challengair Extreme, variable
speed model which we purchased. An additional
consideration when purchasing the blower is the
length of the hose. The model we purchased has
a 10 foot hose which is necessary to be able to
reach to the back of the horse with the blower
set in front of the horse the way we do it. The
box we store, transport and support the blower
with was purchased separately from Lowes and is
manufactured by Task Force.
Food Storage Basics
By Laura Owsley
Ahhh, March is here! I love the month
of March. I’ll be married 47 years
this month! I don’t know how that
happened as I don’t feel over 47 years old
myself! Quite an accomplishment if I do
say so! It took a lot of committment and
hard work, but we did it!! Marriage is very
different from gathering a supply of food,
but both take lots of commitment and
hard work. On that note, we’ll talk about
our goals for the month of March with our
food storage!
I like to gather tomato products and pasta
for the month of March. Keep an eye out
for sales on these items this month. It’s
always helpful to focus on a category of
food items to gather each month so you
spread the expense out over the year. It’s
easy to get overwhelmed if you try to buy
a bunch of food at one time. If you follow
these suggestions, you can gather food
throughout the year and your items will be
naturally rotated so they don’t lose their
shelf life.
See Food Storage Recipe on page 55!
I, myself, love it when I can gather a six
month supply of tomatoes and pasta, but
you can certainly gather a smaller amount.
Do whatever your family can afford and
have space for!
Here is the list of items I work on for my
family during March.
Week 1:15x8 oz. tomato sauce and 6x6
oz. tomato paste.
Week 2: 10x15 oz. canned tomatoes
and 2 jars of salsa.
Week 3: 5 lbs. dry pasta and 4 boxes of
macaroni and cheese.
Week 4: 12 pkg. Ramen noodles.
Tomato based products have a shorter
shelf life of 12 to 18 months, so it’s best
to buy regularly. Dry pasta lasts about
2-3 years if you buy it in bags or boxes
and keep it in sealed containers in a cool
pantry. The key is cool, dark and dry. Some
people love to can their own tomatoes and
make their sauce from scratch. Everyone is
different and that’s one thing I love about
food storage—everyone can gather the
perfect supply for their family! You don’t
have to get anything I suggest or someone
else suggests. You build a supply that
works for your family so they will eat it!
Food storage for you family, your way.
Remember to be charitable this month.
There’s always opportunities to give of
ourselves, just look around!! It doesn’t have
to be anything big or time consuming.
Smile at someone, ask a co-worker or
neighbor how they’re doing and then
listen. Take a plate of goodies or maybe
a dinner to someone. There are lots of
choices! Have a great month!
Chance and his family were always involved
with horses. His love for horses started at
a very young age while being raised in the
ranching and rodeo lifestyle. In the beginning,
most of Chance’s involvement with horses
consisted of participating in rodeo events
including team roping and saddle bronc riding.
During his high school years he rode a few colts
for a trainer or friend who had young horses that
needed ridden. While furthering his education at
Central Arizona College he shoed horses under
Charlie Hill. To this day he still shoes for Charlie
as well as himself in the East Valley area.
It was during this time, while working alongside
Charlie that Chance really became aware of how to
understand different horses and their needs. As well
as gaining a vast amount of insight in the shoeing
aspect of the horse, he was very fortunate to have
opportunities to start young colts with Charlie
Hill’s guidance. “He gave me help and insight when
I needed it but he allowed me to struggle through
certain areas to find the best way to fill in for these
young horses. Starting colts is not just learning
how to start a green horse, but teaches me as a
horseman, how to fill in for the naïve horse and how
I can use this in all of my horsemanship activities.”
Chance does not consider himself a horse trainer
and has no intentions at this time to make a
living starting colts, his career as a farrier and
continuous efforts in the rodeo arena are the
most important. “However, I consider myself a
young man who has knowledge of how to bring
these young horses along in a favorable fashion.
My hope is that there is at least one person that
can use what I have learned and apply it in their
own horsemanship practices.”
Geronimo
Last to Surrender – First to Rodeo
By Jim Olson, ©2015, www.TotallyWestern.com
When Sitting Bull agreed to appear in Buffalo
Bill Cody’s Wild West Show in 1885, he
gave world-wide attention to the Native
American Indian and their participation in
Wild West Shows (the predecessor of today’s
rodeos). Buffalo’s Bill’s Wild West Show captivated
audiences from 1883—1913. Other famous Native
Americans who performed with the show at
various times included Geronimo, Chief Joseph,
and Rains In The Face. Today, thousands of Native
American Indians and Canadian First Nations
people compete in rodeos. Geronimo, however,
was the first Apache to participate.
Remembered as a fierce warrior, who later
became a celebrity, few associate Geronimo with
Wild West (rodeo) performances today. Although
it is generally accepted that he was born in 1829,
other reports say it could have been nearer 1832.
Goyathlay (his Apache birth name which is
sometimes also given as Goyahkla), Geronimo
was one of the last Native Warriors to submit to
the US Government. He surrendered to General
Nelson Miles, at Skeleton Canyon (in Arizona),
September 4, 1886. He was then sent to the
Southeast as a prisoner of war.
101 Ranch, 1905
By 1894 he was shipped westward to Fort Sill,
near Lawton, Oklahoma, where he spent the
remainder of his life. Much has been written and
several movies have been made about his life
leading up to the surrender, so we will not delve
into that here.
We now know that
Geronimo was quick
to learn about making
a dollar. Soon after
realizing his own
popularity he began
signing autographs—
charging visitors
around a buck each.
He branched out into
making little wooden
bows and arrows. He
even learned some
English (already being
fluent in Spanish and,
of course, Apache). He
would sell the buttons
off his shirt. As soon
as one was sold and
the customer gone, he
would sew another in
its place to be sold again. Pretty soon, anything
connected to Geronimo became a souvenir. If
asked, he even would show off old battle wounds.
By the late 1890s, he started appearing at
Expositions, Fairs and Wild West Shows.
The promoters of these events had to obtain
permission from the war department, as he was
considered a prisoner of war.
Although he probably appeared at local shows
around Oklahoma before this, the Trans-
Mississippi International Exposition in Omaha,
Nebraska during 1898 was the first time he was
presented on a world-wide stage. Over the next
several years he made appearances at the Pan
American Exposition in Buffalo, the Louisiana
Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, several Worlds
Fairs and numerous Wild West shows including
for Buffalo Bill, the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch and
Pawnee Bill. He even rode in President Theodore
Roosevelt’s inauguration parade in 1905.
At most of these events, Geronimo received
money for his appearance but he would also sell
his autograph, photographs of himself—and
just about anything else he could! He was akin
Pawnee Bill Poster, 1905
to what we might call a “specialty act” at today’s
rodeos. However, even at his advanced age, he did
occasionally rope!
At the St. Louis World’s Fair, when he was not
selling items to tourists and making appearances,
he delighted audiences with roping exhibitions,
even reportedly roping buffalo in the Wild
West show!
Bob Boze Bell of True West Magazine once said,
”Geronimo had a little bit of PT Barnum in him
and a whole lot of courage.”
After the 1904 World’s Fair, Geronimo went on
tour with Pawnee Bill’s Wild West show (again,
with permission of the US Government since he
was technically a prisoner of war). His act was to
shoot buffalo from a moving automobile!
In 1905, the 101 Ranch Wild West Show made
its world-wide debut. It expanded into an
international show which featured roping, riding,
bulldogging, Indian dancers, trick roping, shooting
and much more. A contemporary newspaper
report said there were over 65,000 people at the
ranch for opening day. It is no wonder, with
attractions such as Bill Pickett, Lucille Mulhall and
of course, “The Apache Prisoner Geronimo” was
promoted as a headline act.
In his autobiography, Geronimo said, “When I
was at first asked to attend the St. Louis World’s
Fair I did not wish to go.”
According to another account however, what
Geronimo does not say is that he did not wish to
go because the government was only willing to pay
him $1 per day for appearing at the exposition,
while commercial promoters offered much more.
Once the government made it clear that he could
only leave the compound at Fort Sill under these
terms, he agreed. Or, as he put it, “I consented.”
He went on to say, “Later, when I was told that I
would receive good attention and protection, and
that the President of the United States said that it
would be all right, I consented. …Every Sunday
the President of the Fair sent for me to go to a
Wild West show. I took part in the roping contests
before the audience. There were many other
Indian tribes there, and strange people of whom
I had never heard …There were many strange
things in these shows…I am glad I went to the
Fair. I saw many interesting things and learned
much of the white people. They are a very kind
and peaceful people. During all the time I was at
the Fair no one tried to harm me in any way.”
In 1905, Geronimo agreed to tell his life story
to S. M. Barrett, Superintendent of Education
in Lawton, Oklahoma. Barrett had to ask the
President of the United States for permission to
publish the book. Geronimo reportedly came
to each interview knowing exactly what he
wanted to say. He refused to answer questions
or alter his narrative afterwards, saying, “Write
what I said.” Frederick Turner then re-edited the
autobiography by removing some of Barrett’s
footnotes and writing an introduction. Turner
wrote that the book is in the style of an Apache
reciting his oral history.
It is believed because of a 1939 movie about the
famous Apache warrior, US Paratroopers began
shouting, “Geronimo,” to show they had no fear
when jumping out of an airplane during WWII.
The name has since become a household word.
Many contemporary accounts from his day said
Geronimo was a liar, scoundrel and thief. Modern
accounts tend
to paint him as
a noble Indian
hero. The truth
probably lies
somewhere
in between.
Thanks to his
embracing
capitalism
however, and
his willingness
to participate
at the Wild
West Shows,
Fairs, and
Expositions,
at the time
of his death
Geronimo reportedly had a large sum of money
saved in the bank. Whether this was true or not,
he did in fact, make a lot of money during his
later years. The Apache warrior, turned statesman,
Wild West celebrity and entrepreneur died on
February 17, 1909.
Corned Beef and Cabbage with
Horseradish Cream Sauce
Ingredients:
For the brine:
• 6 cups water
• 3/4 cup kosher salt
• 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
• 1/4 cup pickling spice
• 1 (5-pound) beef brisket
For the corned beef, cabbage, and sauce:
• 1 medium yellow onion, quartered
• 3 large carrots, peeled and cut crosswise into thirds
• 6 medium garlic cloves, smashed
• 1 cup sour cream
• 2 tablespoons prepared horseradish
• 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
• 1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
• Kosher salt
• Freshly ground black pepper
• 1 medium head green cabbage, cut through the core
into 6 wedges
Instructions:
For the brine:
Combine the water, salt, sugar, and pickling spice in a large saucepan
and bring to a boil over high heat, stirring until salt and sugar have
dissolved. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.
Poke several holes on all sides of the brisket with a knife or metal
skewer and place in a 2-1/2-gallon resealable plastic bag. Pour the
brine over the meat (making sure the meat is completely submerged),
press out excess air, seal the bag, and place in a 13-by-9-inch baking
dish. Refrigerate for 3 days or up to 1 week.
For the corned beef, cabbage, and sauce:
Remove the beef from brine and brush off any spices that have stuck
to the meat. Place in a Dutch oven or large, heavy-bottomed pot with
a tightfitting lid. Add the onion, carrots, garlic, and enough cold
water to cover. Bring to a boil over high heat and then reduce to a
simmer. Skim any foam that floats to the top, cover, and simmer until
meat is fork tender, about 2 to 3 hours.
Meanwhile, combine the sour cream, horseradish, mustard, and
lemon juice in a medium nonreactive bowl. Season with salt and
freshly ground black pepper as needed, cover, and refrigerate until
ready to serve.
Once the beef is fork tender, add the cabbage to the pot, cover, and cook
until cabbage is easily pierced with a knife, about 10 to 15 minutes.
Remove the beef to a cutting board and let rest for 10 minutes. Trim
fat as desired and thinly slice against the grain. Serve with vegetables
and horseradish sauce.
