Whiteville woman claims $250,000 Mega Millions prize
RALEIGH – Annie Ward, a retiree from Whiteville in Columbus County, was in her driveway checking the mail
when her son arrived to tell her of her $250,000 Mega Millions win. Ward quick-picked all five white balls but not the
Mega Ball in the Sept. 28 drawing.
“You’re lying,” Ward said as her son showed her the winning ticket. “I didn’t believe him, but now that I’m holding the
check, it’s real.” Ward plans to use a portion of her winnings, worth $170,000 after taxes, to pay bills and take a
vacation to the Ozark Mountains. The ticket was sold at Time Saver Food Store on Washington Street in Whiteville.
A total of 9,182 North Carolina players won prizes in the Tuesday, Sept. 28 Mega Millions drawing, ranging from $2
to $250,000 for a total payout in prizes of $598,951. Another ticket sold in North Carolina matched all five white balls
but not the Mega Ball and is worth $250,000. The ticket was sold at Circle K on N.C. Highway 49 in Mount Pleasant
in Cabarrus County. As no ticket matched all six balls, the jackpot for the Friday, Oct. 1 drawing is an estimated $32
million if taken as an annuity or $22 million if the lump-sum payment is chosen.
In the Powerball drawing held on Wednesday, Sept. 29, a total of 22,532 players won prizes ranging from $3 to $400
for a total payout in prizes of $175,812. Because no ticket matched all six balls in the drawing, the jackpot for the
Saturday, Oct. 2 drawing is an estimated $48 million if taken as an annuity or $26.8 million as a lump-sum payment.
The North Carolina Education Lottery has paid out more than $3.7 million in instant scratch-off ticket prizes since
Monday, Sept. 27. “Carolina Pick 3” players have won more than $910,000. “Carolina Pick 4” players have won
more than $151,000 including eight tickets that won the top prize of $5,000. “Carolina Cash 5” players have won
more than $88,000.
