GOANG-MING YUAN
Goang-ming Yuan is one of Taiwan’s outstanding
figures in New Media art. In the
early 1990s, he started doing art with electronic
and digital media. In the past his
works have often been noted for emulating
and recreating scenes from the real world,
and underscoring the contrast between
imitation and the genuine object. Thus,
they reveal a certain circumstance or state
that is present, and at the same time
convey a considerable degree of symbolic
meaning. Examples include his “Fish on
Dish” (1992), “The Cage” (1995), “The
Reason for Running” (1998) and “Floating”
(2000).
The montage of still life images “City Disqualified
– Ximen District” is the new work
that Goang-ming Yuan now exhibits. In it
appears a vast, deserted Taipei City. The
chosen locale is the crowded, bustling
Ximen (or “West Gate”) district. The dramatic
treatment makes the city seem to
be an enormous stage that has been thoroughly
emptied. In a single moment, the
entire theater of the city seems to have
shed all functionality.
