»Children playing, architects planning, grown-ups building model railways in the
attic. They all reconstruct life in order to anticipate, control, learn. The scale of the
reconstruction determines whether it is a micro- or a macrostructure they try to
understand.
I do not reconstruct existing locations, nor do I look at photographs for reference. I
combine different places, similar spaces/interiors and objects from memory, in order
to understand a country that already is a construct. 50% of the Netherlands should
be water. As man laid it dry, he did so for a reason. Nothing, not even the grass,
would be there without reason. Reconstructing this country is reflecting on the mentality
of its makers.
None of my images could have been photographed in reality. Perspectives are
manipulated, scales are mixed and proportions distorted to create images that
already existed in my mind before I started building. They show how I experience
the world and remember it.«
