Stefan Wischnewski MTSV-Sofa, 2002 Bags, backpacks, air bag, carpet, 220 x 140 x 100 cm »An organisation as an abstract sculpture reflecting social cohesion is a model. The MTSV-Sofa as an organisational model is familiar to us from train stations and airports, where temporary sitting sculptures are created out of bags, when groups travel and meat. The flexible sofa is also a symbol of the constantly changing spatial situations in today’s mobile lifestyle and exemplify the deconstruction, reconstruction, sampling and reconfiguration in the sense of new applications of existing ideas. Since the installation can also be used as a chair and corner sofa there is an overlap even in the reception of the model in art and design. Moreover, a timeless temporary material surface emerges – one that speaks my sculptural language.« 64

They all reconstruct life in order to anticipate, control, learn. The scale of the reconstruction determines whether it is a micro- or a macrostructure they try to understand. I do not reconstruct existing locations, nor do I look at photographs for reference. I combine different places, similar spaces/interiors and objects from memory, in order to understand a country that already is a construct. 50% of the Netherlands should be water. As man laid it dry, he did so for a reason. Nothing, not even the grass, would be there without reason. Reconstructing this country is reflecting on the mentality of its makers. None of my images could have been photographed in reality. Perspectives are manipulated, scales are mixed and proportions distorted to create images that already existed in my mind before I started building. They show how I experience the world and remember it.« 65
