»In 1927 Malevich travelled to Berl<strong>in</strong> to p<strong>art</strong>icipate <strong>in</strong> the ‘Great Berl<strong>in</strong> Art Exhibition’.<br />
For unknown reasons he had to leave earlier for Russia. He left beh<strong>in</strong>d all pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
which he had entrusted to the architect Hugo Här<strong>in</strong>g until the planned return.<br />
Malevich never saw his pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs aga<strong>in</strong>. In a meander<strong>in</strong>g odyssey Här<strong>in</strong>g brought<br />
the pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs which became a risk to own <strong>in</strong> the Nazi period, to his Swabian home<br />
town Biberach <strong>in</strong> 1943. After the war he offered the town the pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs for a very low<br />
price. The town rejected the offer. Här<strong>in</strong>g then sold the pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs to the Stedelijk<br />
Museum Amsterdam, where they are still located.<br />
What would have happened if the pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs had not been sold to Holland, but had<br />
rema<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the small town of Biberach? At this po<strong>in</strong>t the fictive project beg<strong>in</strong>s: The<br />
town of Biberach buys the collection and builds the Malevich Museum Biberach for<br />
it follow<strong>in</strong>g a controversial public debate.«<br />
