»The Studio Wall depicts the frozen collection of objects which once played a role
in my pictures. They are actually fetishes which are supposed to make images come
to life – thus the African figure also has its proper place there as well. In fact these
are mainly objects I have built myself but as models, quasi-placeholders for reality.
There is a picture by Adolph von Menzel, the Studio Wall in the Hamburg Kunsthalle,
which has always appealed to me. It shows death masks, ancient casts and tools,
his everyday instruments, neatly hanging next to each other like in a workshop. Yet
the dramatic lighting turns it into a picture, even though (at the time) no context
worthy of a picture could be seen at the time. The working tools are self-descriptive.«
