Antal Lakner Naval Cutlery Kit, Icelandic Marine Units, series: HER - The Icelandic Army, 2003 Stainless steel, synthetic, 30 x 30 x 5 cm, ed. 5 One of his long-term projects (since 1999) gaining a new topicality in each of its new contexts, is the creation of the equipments of the Iceland Army. The uniforms, the Turtle type armoured tent, the map with military posts, the on-location photographs, a photo of the Iceland Ministry of Defence and the maquettes made in small series were followed by the Plankton class floating naval observation tower and the naval cutlery. The interest of the prototypes comes from their alternative function: In Lakner’s interpretation this military is pacifist, serves only purposes of defence, has no arms, its ground forces and navy occupies observation and defence posts. ... Iceland has been a member of NATO since 1949, though has no actual army. Lakner’s statement could be considered an alternative utopia. But times are changing now: thanks to the reorganization of NATO, Iceland now, after several decades, has to consider establishing an army of its own. We don’t know as yet what their decision will be. - Judit Angel, in Hungary Unplugged (Cotthem Gallery, Brussels, 2003). 46

Zbigniew Libera Lego Concentration Camp, 1996 4 inkjet prints, series of 7 pieces, 28 x 30 cm each, ed. 10 »My work imitates a toy but it is not intended for play. The thought, however, which led me to create this work affected rationality. The rationality of the Lego system is shocking, you cannot build an irregular construction from these blocks, or something shapeless, there will always have to be a right-angle somewhere. You can only do what the rational system allows you to do. What is more, theoretically everyone can build whatever he or she wants but in practice you build what is shown on the box.« - The Art of Legalising Rebellion. Zbigniew Libera Interviewed by Bozena · Czubak, in Art Magazine (No. 15-16, 3-4/1997). 47
