essential for change and change is what is needed accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>Bauman</strong>. As Pi-<br />

erre Bourdieu po<strong>in</strong>ted out, <strong>in</strong> order to be able to shape <strong>the</strong> future <strong>of</strong> human life,<br />

we need to be able to grasp <strong>the</strong> present: “The capacity for future projections is<br />

<strong>the</strong> condition <strong>of</strong> all behaviour considered to be rational […] To conceive <strong>of</strong> a<br />

revolutionary project, that is to have a well thought-out <strong>in</strong>tention to transform<br />

<strong>the</strong> present <strong>in</strong> reference to a projected future, a modicum <strong>of</strong> hold on <strong>the</strong> present<br />

is needed” (Bourdieu <strong>in</strong> <strong>Bauman</strong> 1999:172). This grasp <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> present is not<br />

only a matter for ‘ord<strong>in</strong>ary people’ all over <strong>the</strong> globe but equally a lesson to be<br />

learned for those claim<strong>in</strong>g to analyse and dissect <strong>the</strong> human condition, <strong>the</strong> soci-<br />

ologists and related scholars.<br />

<strong>Sociologi</strong>st are, as mentioned earlier accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>Bauman</strong>, capable <strong>of</strong> as<br />

well as responsible for seek<strong>in</strong>g to bridge what is to be done on <strong>the</strong> one hand,<br />

and what we can do on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand. <strong>Bauman</strong> muses at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> his Amalfi<br />

Award lecture more than a decade ago: “Who more than we, sociologists, are<br />

fit to alert our fellow humans to <strong>the</strong> gap between <strong>the</strong> necessary and <strong>the</strong> real,<br />

between <strong>the</strong> survival significance <strong>of</strong> moral limits and <strong>the</strong> world determ<strong>in</strong>ed to<br />

live – and to live happily; and perhaps even after al – without <strong>the</strong>m” (<strong>Bauman</strong><br />

1989:221). More recently, however, he has stated his own mission more di-<br />

rectly and clearly than previously conflat<strong>in</strong>g with his understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> our dis-<br />

cipl<strong>in</strong>e’s raison d’être by pronounc<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

Sociology cannot correct <strong>the</strong> short-com<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, but it can help us to un-<br />

derstand <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> a more complete manner and <strong>in</strong> so do<strong>in</strong>g, enable us to act upon<br />

<strong>the</strong>m for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> human betterment. In this time <strong>of</strong> globalization we need<br />

<strong>the</strong> knowledge that sociology can provide more than ever before. After all, to un-<br />

derstand ourselves <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> present enables a hold upon current conditions and rela-<br />

tions without which <strong>the</strong>re is no hope <strong>of</strong> shap<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> future (<strong>Bauman</strong> & May<br />

2001:116).<br />
