Especially <strong>in</strong> what could be termed <strong>Bauman</strong>’s ‘moral phase’ rang<strong>in</strong>g approxi-<br />
mately throughout <strong>the</strong> last decade <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> millennium, he was <strong>in</strong>spired and al-<br />
most seduced by <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>sights consist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> moral responsibility, be<strong>in</strong>g-for <strong>in</strong>-<br />
stead <strong>of</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g-with <strong>the</strong> O<strong>the</strong>r, and <strong>the</strong> will<strong>in</strong>gness to give one’s own life for <strong>the</strong><br />
sake <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> O<strong>the</strong>r (cf. <strong>Bauman</strong> 1992b, 1993, 1995). The moral utopia, as <strong>the</strong> one<br />
depicted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> recent box <strong>of</strong>fice success Pay It Forward, is derived from Em-<br />
manuel Lev<strong>in</strong>as, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>Bauman</strong>’s ma<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>tellectual sources <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>spiration,<br />
where <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ute and meticulous moral actions <strong>of</strong> discrete <strong>in</strong>dividuals are<br />
thought and hoped to br<strong>in</strong>g about more widespread consequences like ripples<br />
on <strong>the</strong> surface <strong>of</strong> water spread<strong>in</strong>g to wider and wider regions <strong>of</strong> social life. On<br />
his own utopianism which beyond reasonable doubt has also <strong>in</strong>spired <strong>Bauman</strong>,<br />
Lev<strong>in</strong>as noted:<br />
There is a utopian moment <strong>in</strong> what I say; it is <strong>the</strong> recognition <strong>of</strong> someth<strong>in</strong>g which<br />
cannot be realized but which, ultimately, guides all moral action. This utopianism<br />
does not prohibit you from condemn<strong>in</strong>g certa<strong>in</strong> factual states, nor from recogniz-<br />
<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> relative progress that can be made. <strong>Utopianism</strong> is not a condemnation <strong>of</strong><br />
everyth<strong>in</strong>g else. There is no moral life without utopianism – utopianism <strong>in</strong> this<br />
exact sense that sa<strong>in</strong>tl<strong>in</strong>ess is goodness (Lev<strong>in</strong>as 1988:178).<br />
It appears that this utopian vision <strong>of</strong> an ethics <strong>of</strong> proximity <strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly<br />
globalised and <strong>in</strong>dividualised world becomes more and more distant and blurry<br />
but <strong>Bauman</strong> has never, despite some m<strong>in</strong>or concessions (cf. <strong>Bauman</strong> 1997b,<br />
2001b:175-200), turned his back totally on this hope – utopian or not. Else-<br />
where Lev<strong>in</strong>as differentiated between ‘totality’ and ‘<strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>ity’. Where totality<br />
refers to attempts at coerc<strong>in</strong>g people <strong>in</strong>to order and systematically limit<strong>in</strong>g pos-<br />
sibilities, <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>ity, on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, refers to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>ite possibilities, human<br />
responsibility and <strong>of</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g o<strong>the</strong>r (cf. Lev<strong>in</strong>as 1961). The utopian strand <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>Bauman</strong>’s thought is <strong>in</strong> favour <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>ity and aga<strong>in</strong>st totalis<strong>in</strong>g tendencies that<br />
