ventured <strong>in</strong>to say<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> obscurity <strong>of</strong> this k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> sociology was not con-<br />

sidered fertile or conducive for empirical research. 12 Perhaps this turn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

backs on <strong>Bauman</strong> has someth<strong>in</strong>g to do with <strong>the</strong> way American sociology, al-<br />

though speak<strong>in</strong>g about American sociology <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>gular is obviously mis-<br />

lead<strong>in</strong>g, regards this k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> elusive, utopian th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g as contrasted with <strong>the</strong><br />

still outspread <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> what C. Wright Mills (1959) famously termed respec-<br />

tively ‘grand <strong>the</strong>ory’ and ‘abstracted empiricism’? Perhaps o<strong>the</strong>r reasons such<br />

as <strong>Bauman</strong>’s erstwhile flirtation with Marxism is to blame? Whe<strong>the</strong>r one reason<br />

or <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> widespread misrecognition <strong>of</strong> his work <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States is<br />

surpris<strong>in</strong>g especially because so much <strong>of</strong> American culture, its democratic <strong>in</strong>sti-<br />

tutions, popular sentiments and urban plann<strong>in</strong>g has been <strong>in</strong>spired exactly by<br />

utopian ideas. The very notion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ‘American Dream’ is itself a strik<strong>in</strong>g ex-<br />

pression <strong>of</strong> utopianism and <strong>the</strong> perpetual striv<strong>in</strong>g that characterises it and as<br />

former Secretary <strong>of</strong> State, Henry Kiss<strong>in</strong>ger, aptly summarised: ‘For o<strong>the</strong>r na-<br />

tions, Utopia is a blessed past never to be recovered; for Americans it is just<br />

beyond <strong>the</strong> horizon’. Perhaps Americans forgot to dream or <strong>the</strong> dream has be-<br />

come real? Perhaps <strong>the</strong>y forgot to imag<strong>in</strong>e what lies just beyond <strong>the</strong> horizon?<br />

Whe<strong>the</strong>r one or <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, utopia stand <strong>the</strong> best chances when it is at odds with<br />

reality and thus <strong>the</strong>re is still hope that <strong>Bauman</strong>’s th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g will eventually cross<br />

<strong>the</strong> Atlantic and also <strong>in</strong>spire American colleagues.<br />

Mannheim noted that ideas, <strong>in</strong> order to be utopian, needed to be ‘<strong>in</strong>con-<br />

gruous with <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> reality’ with<strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y occur (Mannheim<br />

1936/1976:173). <strong>Bauman</strong>’s utopian undercurrent is <strong>in</strong>deed <strong>in</strong>congruous with<br />

<strong>the</strong> contemporary state <strong>of</strong> affairs <strong>in</strong> most parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world where <strong>the</strong> collective<br />

ability to dream, hope and conjure up alternatives has dried out. Today, utopias<br />

have to a great extent been ‘privatised’ and ‘deregulated’ toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong><br />

fears <strong>of</strong> reality and <strong>the</strong> moral impulse to do someth<strong>in</strong>g about human misery,<br />
