As one <strong>of</strong> <strong>Bauman</strong>’s teachers, <strong>the</strong> revisionist pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> economy Wa-<br />
claw Lip<strong>in</strong>ski, taught him, sociologists should never predict (Smith 1999:203)<br />
and especially should <strong>the</strong>y refra<strong>in</strong> from predict<strong>in</strong>g about <strong>the</strong> future, as Danish<br />
multi-talented artist Storm Petersen once humorously added. This may also be<br />
one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> major reasons why <strong>Bauman</strong>’s ideas <strong>of</strong> utopia are not galvanised <strong>in</strong>to<br />
<strong>the</strong> aforementioned grandiose visions <strong>of</strong> a future k<strong>in</strong>gdom <strong>of</strong> unrestra<strong>in</strong>ed free-<br />
dom or an equally impossible post-scarcity society. Despite be<strong>in</strong>g prophetic and<br />
<strong>in</strong>terpretative, he is realistic enough not to daydream or build castles <strong>in</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong>. 6<br />
He <strong>in</strong>stead wishes that people <strong>the</strong>mselves without <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> force or coercion<br />
may discover <strong>the</strong> social forms and notions <strong>of</strong> human cohabitation that fulfil<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir ambitions and aspirations for <strong>the</strong> good life. Here <strong>the</strong> sociologists may be<br />
<strong>of</strong> some assistance <strong>in</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>the</strong> possibilities yet uncovered or <strong>the</strong> con-<br />
stra<strong>in</strong>ts on such possibilities to be demolished and discarded and <strong>the</strong>reby mak-<br />
<strong>in</strong>g change impossible. In a similar fashion to Milan Kundera, who stated that a<br />
novel that does not discover <strong>the</strong> hi<strong>the</strong>rto unknown segment <strong>of</strong> human existence<br />
is immoral, <strong>Bauman</strong> would be able to claim that a sociology that is negligent <strong>of</strong><br />
human possibilities and potential is by def<strong>in</strong>ition unethical (Tester 2002b). We<br />
should not pose as <strong>the</strong> aforementioned legislators <strong>of</strong> predeterm<strong>in</strong>ed utopias but<br />
ra<strong>the</strong>r stand forth as <strong>in</strong>terpreters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> manifold possibilities <strong>of</strong> different ver-<br />
sions <strong>of</strong> utopia – which is perhaps more a matter <strong>of</strong> cultural determ<strong>in</strong>ation than<br />
actual <strong>in</strong>dividual choice. <strong>Bauman</strong> is aware that giv<strong>in</strong>g up on <strong>the</strong> modernist ideal<br />
<strong>of</strong> perfect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> world, domesticat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> wilderness and creat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> utopian<br />
ideal <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> midst <strong>of</strong> reality may actually and paradoxically also be an obstacle<br />
to <strong>the</strong> utopias he is envisag<strong>in</strong>g: “To abandon social eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g as a valid<br />
means <strong>of</strong> political practice means to discard […] all visions <strong>of</strong> a different soci-<br />
ety; even makes it difficult to imag<strong>in</strong>e ano<strong>the</strong>r way <strong>of</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g or organiz<strong>in</strong>g our<br />
lives and priorities” (<strong>Bauman</strong> 1991:269). However, <strong>the</strong> modernist utopias born<br />
