‘Lifelong Formation”
20 FEBRUARY 2015 No. 4
Dear Parents
The 17 February is a significant date for those of us who are members of the Oblate community. After
years of work in Aix, Southern France, a young, 29 year old priest, Eugene de Mazenod, concerned for
thousands of his countrymen disenfranchised from religion because of the French Revolution, gathered
together a small band of missionaries to preach in the vernacular and care for the rural populations of
Provence. The congregation was founded on January 25, 1816 and solemnly approved by Pope Leo
XII under the name of Congregation of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate on 17 February, 1826.
It was St Eugene’s concern for the poor and marginalised that led him to found the congregation and
this commitment to the poor and marginalised has carried through to our own community here at Iona
College. It is another important value on which our College is based and has wide ranging implications
for us. Our commitment to the poor and marginalised is enacted not only by supporting the poor in
foreign missions but also by being accessible to Catholic families of this area who struggle financially
and also to those amongst us who are spiritually, organisationally, emotionally, academically and
socially poor.
Our Commitment Mass is
held as close as possible
to the 17 February every
year. At this year’s
Commitment Mass we
welcomed celebrant
Bishop Mark who
delighted the boys with
his presence, homily and
explanations of Bishop
Regalia. Senior students,
student leaders, staff,
board members and
Oblates all made solemn
commitments to their
roles and obligations just
as St Eugene’s small
band of missionaries did
almost two hundred years
ago.
It has been remiss of me not to mention in earlier newsletters the passing of one of our founding
priests, Fr Denis McCarthy O.M.I., who died peacefully on 31 December last year. He arrived at the
Iona site on 1 October 1957 with Fr Tim Long O.M.I.. They had virtually no money and had a mere four
months to get the site and its sparse buildings ready for a school to start on 28 January 1958.
“While Fr Long had the vision, it was Fr Denis McCarthy who had the strength and energy to drive it. It
was on his broad, young, Irish shoulders that much of the pioneering work was carried. He rallied the
local families, raised funds in a myriad of creative ways, dug ditches and drains, carved out the
driveway with his own hands, cleared scrub and planted trees. No one worked harder than he to ready
the playing fields and classrooms for the boys, and in doing so he established the foundations of
community, loyalty and faith that Iona rests upon today.” (Mrs Sandra Hazel O.M.I.(H))
I hope you are aware that the College has installed a new IT management system. Its introduction has
been successful to date and we are slowly coming to grips with how to access and process
information. Some features are yet to come on line though. In particular I refer to the replacement for
“igloo”, the parent portal. The new “parent lounge” is now up and running in a limited capacity and can
be accessed via the College home page. We expect that homework, assignment tasks and the like will
all be available around Easter. I thank you for your patience in this mammoth change.
With the introduction of the new IT system we are reviewing our academic reporting process. We
would like to consult the parent body in this process and are looking to do this at the next P&F meeting
on 2 March. At this meeting Mr Christie and Mrs Johnston will present on possible changes and there
will be an opportunity for you to provide your wisdom. P&F meetings are held in the new Fr P Daly
building and start at 7.00pm. I look forward to seeing you there.
Best wishes for a great week ahead.
STAFFING
Research shows that teachers – not resources, technology, facilities or
even class size, are the single most powerful school influence on
student performance. This means if we want the best outcomes for our
students, we need the best teachers who are able to inspire students,
teach them to think creatively and critically, encourage innovation and
guide them to use their initiative and independence.
These characteristics have been very evident in Iona’s classrooms as
I’ve walked around this week. It is clear that our staff and students are
enjoying the start to the year and it’s been exciting to see the passion
and enthusiasm for learning that is characterising our learning
environments.
Some of our most animated students have been our Year 5 and 6
students who have engaged fervently in the Enrichment Program.
Students were given their choice of topics from a range of science,
technology, engineering, art and mathematical units. Over the term,
they will work on novel, challenging activities where teachers encourage
them to be self-directed, collaborative and creative. They will have
opportunities to use their imaginations, engage in problem solving and
investigate. Experimentation and failure are celebrated and teachers
facilitate an environment where students are encouraged: “Sometimes
you succeed…and sometimes you learn”.
A great deal of work has gone into the design, preparation and
implementation of this program and I thank the staff for their
enthusiasm, dedication and positive influence on our students’ learning
environments.
Mrs Deanne Johnston
Dean of Staff
LEARNING AND TEACHING
I have enjoyed the opportunity over the past three weeks to interview a
range of students across Years 5 to 12. As I mentioned in the
newsletter two weeks ago, every Year 12 student has been interviewed
as part of a process aimed at improving academic care and
performance. The vast majority of these interviews were very positive
experiences. At the same time, I also enjoyed congratulating a number
of Year 6 to 12 students in person who had demonstrated the highest
levels of achievements in a variety of their subjects.
There are, however, a few students who lose their way in their
respective academic programs and as result I have also seized the
opportunity to discuss what openings there are to improve on past
results and what support the College can provide. Inevitably, many of
these conversations uncover a lack of organisation and an inability for
the student to structure a functional routine of homework, revision and
assessment preparation.
Here are a number of questions parents might like to ask their sons:
Have you created a term planner that major events and assessment
can be inserted into as a way to plan ahead?
Have you created a weekly planner so that the time available each
day can be used effectively? Activities such as co-curricular pursuits
should be included so that time can be allocated.
Have you allowed for your son to complete work in an area that is
conducive to effecting learning? Some boys have enough self-control
to work in their rooms unsupervised whilst others need an area that
has less distractions (and where they can be monitored).
Does your son have all the materials required to complete work at
home? Is the chair he is using comfortable? If he requires a
calculator, does it have the correct functionality?
Does your son keep a journal / notepad where he can reflect on the
effectiveness of the work completed? This allows him to change a
routine that is not working. It might allow him to remember questions
the next day at school that he needs to ask a teacher. Metacognition
(thinking about your thinking) and reflection are important traits to
have.
The new learning management system (LMS) will be operational in a
few weeks time. There will be resources available in order for students
to more effectively use their time at home, to reinforce work completed
at school and also to prepare for assessment.
FAITH AND MISSION
ASH WEDNESDAY 2015
Turn away from sin and
be faithful to the Gospel.
The ritual of ‘Ash Wednesday’
is a very ancient one. It is full
of symbolism and meaning,
related to our humanness and
our relationship with God.
Our Ash Wednesday liturgies this week marked an important time in the
Church year. Today is the beginning of the Church season of Lent
where we prepare for the great Easter event. It is important to
remember our humanity, our humanness and to think about who we are
as persons, who we are to our neighbour and who we are before God.
In full respect for God’s greatness, we are challenged to think about
who we are in the universe, that our lives are short and that we need to
be the best people we can be. This is our challenge because our
ultimate home is with God.
God of Compassion, Justice and Transformation,
Help us to be more open to your invitation to prayer;
to be more loving towards our fellow man
and to be more conscious of our actions and our good deeds.
Grant this through Christ, our Lord.
Amen.
Dean of Faith and Mission
ART NEWS
ENVIRONMENTAL CALENDAR COMPETITION
Last year Junior Art Club students participated
in an Environmental Calendar competition run
by Gateway Industry and Community Mutual
Aid Group. The aim was to complete a poster
which represented ideas covering safety,
environment and health.
There were entries from school students in the
Gateway region. Two students from Iona
were lucky enough to have their art selected
to be printed in the calendar. In December
they were presented with an award and prize
at Queensland Parliament House. This was a
huge honour. Congratulations to Declan
THE RESULTS
It was fun! The College’s annual Inter-house Theatresports
Competition was held last Monday evening to a packed and
enthusiastic house in IPAC. This year saw a change in the format of
the inter-house competition due to the introduction of Year 7 into high
school. The result was a tremendous success! Houses competed at
junior (Years 7-9) and senior (Years 10-12) levels.
The improvisation games commenced with ‘Poem of Praise’ and then
the valiant teams went on to play ‘Commercial’, ‘Expert Double
Figures’, ‘Death in a Minute’ and ‘Emotional Replay’. It was a
thoroughly enjoyable evening! Congratulations to all of the boys who
were courageous and represented their House with creativity,
ingenuity and good humour.
The competition was judged by members of the Drama Department’s
teaching staff; thank you to Ms Sarah Barry, Ms Emilia Keene and
Mrs Bernadette O’Leary. The winning trophy was presented by actor
and Old Boy, Tom Oliver. A very big thank you to the Year 12
LAST WEEK
Our weekend saw our younger teams play at home and the College
was engulfed by swimmers, cricketers and volleyballers. In volleyball,
Iona won the day overall with twelve wins and eight losses. Our Year 7
and 8 teams were again outstanding.
There were mixed cricket results with the highlight being the 1st XI
winning in a display that saw captain Bailey Lavender score 108 not
out. This is a rare individual achievement.
Our sailing team also took to the water for Term 1 aquatic action.
Our swimming team competed against Villanova last Friday evening in
a head to head meet. Our Year 5/6 swimmers continued to impress,
dominating Villanova. Our Year 7—12 team did not have all their own
way, with Villanova outstanding in some ages and our team will need to
work hard to hold off the St Laurence’s and Villanova challenge for third
place in the AIC Championships.
IONA STRONG / FITNESS TRAINING
Iona Strong is a new initiative to promote physical fitness with the goal
to improve our individual and team performance. It will also have a
Overland in the year 5 eating area. Then proceed to McCarthy oval.
Please wear comfortable exercise clothes and bring a water bottle.
These sessions serve as a great preparation for boys wanting to be
physically ready for the up coming cross country, rugby and football
seasons.
