I
am delighted to present our new list for the coming planting season. event of a dry spring such as we’ve had the last couple of years. Lifting 2
We remain committed to growing the most exciting plants to the is weather dependant though, as we can’t continue if everything is water-
best of our ability, and to giving you, the customer, the kind of perlogged or frozen solid.
sonal service that seems to have almost disappeared from society these
days. I make no bones about emphasizing this. We propagate from our I would encourage you therefore to make your plans and reserve your
own stock plants, and grow on, everything that we sell. We do not buy in plants for when we can lift them. I will be starting to take confirmed
to re-sell. It is our belief that too many plants are imported, with inherent reserves in September once we have completed our full “pre-season”
establishment and environmental concerns. I urge you to “Buy British”! stock take which will enable me to give you precise information on any
plant of interest.
The intention with this new catalogue is that you can make notes of personal
interest and relevance as you either walk round the nursery here, or We are blessed with wonderful soil here, and magnificent views, so we
research the plants at home. An increasing number of folk have access to are very exposed. Our plants will be hardy, that’s for sure!
the internet, so I encourage you to use this list in conjunction with our
website
The following listing is intended to include all plants that will be avail-
www.junker.co.uk
able over the next season. Inevitably there will be things I’ve missed,
where full descriptions can be found. We’re still intent on including pho- and others will sell out since we only sell plants which we grow ourtos
of everything on our website, but you’ll understand that we’ve been a selves. So do please email me your list prior to ordering. In many cases
bit busy of late…
there will be multiple sizes available. Our new site allows us to offer
much larger specimens in addition to our normal range, including semimature
maples that need to be seen to be believed! Although our core
range remains very similar, we will be developing collections of a number
of other plants which will complement them. In time, examples of all
our mother plants will be displayed in a natural setting, allowing full and
meaningful comparison between cultivars to be made. This will not only
look awesome, it will also be incredibly useful.
We’re doing things a little differently here: we are growing an increasing
amount of our stock in the open ground, to be lifted, root-balled and
wrapped (not to be confused with “bare-root” which is never as satisfactory.)
There are numerous advantages to this apparently “old-fashioned”
method, not least of which is the production of hardier, more robust
plants. They have an established natural root system, and are used to
growing outside in the real world. Thus they are better acclimatised and
will be far more tolerant of the extremes of weather we seem to be experiencing
than soft plants pushed on in artificial conditions. We believe
that the use of peat-based composts and plastic pots is not sustainable.
Typically we start lifting in late-October, dependant on the weather. The
plants don’t need to have completely lost their leaves, but they do need
to have finished active growth for the season. We will then continue lifting
right through until March or so, but late planting can be risky in the
Our delivery service becomes increasingly relevant with these larger
plants —most areas are accessible with patience. Please ask.
Visitors remain welcome by appointment only, so do please ring or
email before visiting, to ensure that either myself or my son Torsten will
be available to show you the plants.
Karan Junker
If you are interested in purchasing any of our plants, drop me through an email with your wish list. Give me an idea of
what sort of size plants you would prefer and whether you wish to collect or have them delivered. Remember to include
your full postal address including phone number and postcode. I will then reply with price, size and availability detail and
we can progress from there.
After the success of last year’s debut, I have once again produced
a simple list rather than a descriptive catalogue. As we increase
the number of varieties that we grow, particularly the number of
cultivars within a given genus, so the quantity of any one variety
decreases. This was making the descriptive catalogue increasingly
unwieldy, and I had started to leave out any cultivars only
available in small numbers, which seemed a little self-defeating.
With current environmental awareness, I am also mindful of paper
usage. Times change and the internet is becoming more ubiquitous.
Thus my intention is that this booklet represents a list of
plants that are available for Autumn 2012, or will be available
over the coming season. Use it in conjunction with the website,
which will be updated as often as my time allows, where full descriptions
will be found. Helpfully, I have left lots of space on
the pages here for you to make your personal notes.
We are now growing our plants in an increasing number of different
sizes which was also contributing to catalogue complications,
as it was simply impossible to list all the options with their
prices. In principle the price is determined by age rather than
physical size. Thus the website will show the starting price for
the youngest plants. For example, I have Japanese maples in assorted
sizes ranging from around £30 up to two thousand pounds,
with a myriad steps in between. Something for everyone then, but
bear in mind not all cultivars will be available in all sizes all the
time. Some plants will sell out, and others may become available.
In principle the starting size for most things is a 2 or 3 litre pot at
an appropriate price, whilst the older, more mature plants tend to
be growing on in the open ground where they can develop naturally,
in most cases making a more compact, denser plant than
their pot-grown equivalent. This more robust plant will need less
staking and protection when planted.
Regular readers may notice the sudden inclusion of a range of
Agave and Dasylirion. These are my son Torsten’s production.
He has raised them all from seed and is excited to see them reach
saleable proportions; indeed some of them are now pleasantly
substantial. Perfect for pots on the patio. He has eclectic tastes,
with his personal collection including named Echinopsis
(basically cacti with amazing great big flowers) - if those appeal
(perhaps to encourage an interested youngster) he has a number
available in small pots. They are deceptively tolerant and will
happily sit outside in a pot through the summer. Now that would
be a talking point on your patio!
As always, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact
me. Be aware that the new site here is over 3 times the size of our
previous holding, so I am not always in range of the phone. Thus
email communications are preferable as I can deal with them at
unsociable times!

“Gardening with Woodland Plants”
The premier horticultural publisher Timber Press commissioned
me to write a book and I am delighted to report that not only is it
available, but the reviews have all been jolly good (even if I do say so
myself!)
The concept of Gardening with Woodland is so exciting; it looks
at a number of ways of enhancing natural woodland as well as creating
woodland areas in the garden, to whatever scale is appropriate;
conveying the principle that a Woodland Garden can be created in
even the smallest space. Early sections deal with the concepts and
opportunities, as well as the practical aspects of preparation and
maintenance, with well over half the book devoted to an eclectic compendium
of plants suitable for Woodland cultivation; from the tiniest
Woodland Floor bulbs and perennials up to trees with which to supplement
the upper canopy. Some 350 colour photos will illustrate it.
Although an enormous amount of work, it was a huge amount
of fun to write and I hope it gives equal pleasure to those who read it.
My dream is to inspire people, dedicated gardeners and uncertain
novices alike, to really make the most of their Woodland, or to create
their very own. I want you to see the group of trees at the bottom of
the garden as an opportunity rather than a problem. Even the tiniest
garden can embrace the Woodland ethos with sympathetic underplanting
of existing features, whether they be shrubs, individual trees
or hedges.
We are currently offering my book at a discounted price of £25 plus
p&p making a total of £31.
Please make cheques payable to me personally - ”K. Junker” and
send them to me here at the nursery. Thank you for your support.
TERMS OF BUSINESS - Please read these. Placing of an order implies acceptance of
these terms. They are intended to help you, and to prevent misunderstandings.
How to order.
∗ Email me a list of the plants that interest you. karan@junker.co.uk
∗ Tell me if you would like larger plants if available.
∗ Tell me whether you need delivery or collection.
∗ Include your postal address and telephone number.
∗ Indicate if the delivery address is different to your own or if there are any dates
when delivery cannot be made ie holidays. This will prevent your plants arriving
whilst you are away.
∗ We reserve the right to levy a 25% re-stocking fee on accepted orders which are
subsequently cancelled by the customer.
Availability.
∗ All plants are offered subject to being unsold at the time of processing your order.
∗ If we accept an order and payment for a plant which subsequently is unavailable for
any reason, our liability is limited to the refund of the price paid for the plant.
How to pay.
∗ To simplify the ordering process, we require payment with order, once availability is
confirmed. This can be by cheque or bank transfer. The latter is preferable—please
ask for my bank details.
∗ Carriage pricing is complicated. For a full explanation, see our website. If in doubt as
to how much it will cost, please contact me.
∗ If your order will be despatched in more than one batch, carriage will be payable for
each part.
∗ As a small business, we do not accept credit cards. This is due to the fees
charged by the credit card companies. It would simply result in price increases.
∗ All prices include VAT, currently at 20%.
Problems.
We try hard to ensure that problems do not occur. Inevitably, some occasionally do, and
then we try as hard to solve them!
∗ We believe that all our plants are true to name. If this is proven not to be the case,
our liability is limited to the refund of the purchase price of the original plant or
replacement, at our discretion.
∗ If we agree to replace a plant, the customer will pay the appropriate carriage
charge.
IMPORTANT
∗ We cannot and will not be held responsible for the plants once in the hands of the
carrier. These days, no 24 hour carrier will insure plants. I may not agree with this,
but it is out of my control. I regret but stress that you use the 24 hour carrier at
your own risk. The “man and van” option is therefore much safer.
∗ We will not be responsible for damages which occur in transit.
∗ We cannot and will not be held responsible for failures due to
inclement weather conditions or unsuitable planting sites.
“If you are pleased with our service, please tell your friends. If not, then please
tell us.”
