Ein kurze Zusammenfassung ...<br />
Die 7. Ausgabe von DRAWING NOW PARIS I LE SALON DU DESSIN CONTEMPORAIN findet<br />
vom 11. bis zum 14. April 2013 im Carrousel du Louvre staT.<br />
Es handelt sich um die führende europäische Fachmesse für zeitgenössische Kunst, deren<br />
Gegenstand ausschließlich die Zeichnung ist.<br />
85 Galerien werden ausstellen, darunter 30 % aus dem Ausland, und 13 Länder werden<br />
repräsen^ert sein. Auch die Pla_orm EMERGENCE wird immer interna^onaler: In diesem<br />
Jahr kommen 50 % der Galerien aus dem Ausland.<br />
Abgesehen von der Pla_orm EMERGENCE, die junge Galerien aus der ganzen Welt<br />
präsen^ert, erneuert sich die Pla_orm REFERENCE wie jedes Jahr um mehr als 45<br />
Prozent. Auch in diesem Jahr können Sammler und Kunstliebhaber das Werk<br />
aufstrebender oder etablierter Künstler entdecken.<br />
News 2013:<br />
DRAWING NOW PARIS stellt ihre Uhren in diesem Jahr nach der Schweiz. Dies erfolgt<br />
unter der Schirmherrschad der Schweizer Botschad in Paris und in Partnerschad mit dem<br />
Kulturverein Levier Culturel Suisse en France und dem Schweizer Kulturzentrum in Paris.<br />
Am Freitag, dem 12. April, an dem die Schweiz das SchwerpunkThema der Messe ist,<br />
wird um 17 Uhr ein Vortrag über die zeitgenössische Zeichnung in der Schweiz<br />
sta_inden.<br />
Jean de Loisy stellt für den Palais de Tokyo sein Imaginäres Museum der zeitgenössischen<br />
Zeichnung vor.<br />
Philippe Piguet wird während der gesamten Dauer der Messe Gespräche mit Künstlern<br />
führen:<br />

Freitag, 12. April, 12 Uhr: ein Gespräch mit Jérôme Damien Deroubaix<br />

Jeden Tag wird im Carrousel du Louvre im Rahmen von DRAWING IN PROCESS ein<br />
anderer Künstler dem Publikum seine Herangehensweise an die Schaffung einer<br />
zeitgenössischen Zeichnung verraten.<br />

EDITORIAL<br />
7 Jahre für die zeitgenössische Zeichnung: Vernund und Unvernund.<br />
In wenigen Jahren ist DRAWING NOW PARIS I LE SALON DU DESSIN CONTEMPORAIN zu<br />
einem unumgänglichen Termin auf dem Messekalender der zeitgenössischen Kunst<br />
geworden.<br />
Man sagt, Kinder häTen mit 7 Jahren das Vernundalter erreicht. Das Gleiche gilt für<br />
unsere Messe, die in diesem Jahr einen gewisse Reifegrad erreicht hat. Es ist uns<br />
gelungen, zu wachsen und gleichzei^g unserer ursprünglichen Idee treu zu bleiben. Wir<br />
bewahren uns also einen Hauch von Unvernund, denn wir wollen unsere Besucher im<br />
Carrousel du Louvre und außerhalb davon auch weiterhin überraschen.<br />
Die zeitgenössische Zeichnung mo^viert jeden Tag junge Talente und bringt neue<br />
Ausdrucksformen hervor, die wir zeigen wollen. Wir konfron^eren diese jungen Talente<br />
aber auch mit Werten, die sich bewährt haben und bereits in die Kunstgeschichte<br />
eingegangen sind.<br />
Diese bewusst organisierte Konfronta^on wird durch die räumliche Anordnung auf der<br />
Messe deutlich gemacht.<br />
Seit zwei Jahren unterstützen wir die junge Krea^on über die Pla_orm EMERGENCE, die<br />
es jungen Galerien ermöglicht, das Werk von Künstlern unter 40 Jahren zu zeigen. Diese<br />
Pla_orm ist in diesem Jahr mit mehr als 50 % ausländischen Galerien sehr interna^onal.<br />
Auf der Pla_orm REFERENCE stellen mehr als 71 französische und ausländische Galerien<br />
aus. Sie nehmen den Besucher mit auf eine Reise durch die letzten 50 Jahre der<br />
zeitgenössischen Zeichnung und präsen^eren damit ein breites Panorama dieser<br />
Kunsporm.<br />
Im Jahr 2013 stellt DRAWING NOW PARIS ihre Uhren nach der Schweiz: Sie präsen^ert die<br />
grafische Krea^on in der Schweiz, die Dynamik ihrer zahlreichen Kunstgalerien,<br />
öffentlichen Einrichtungen und Museen und die Vision ihrer Sammler. Diese Ini^a^ve<br />
manifes^ert sich in Form von zahlreichen Events innerhalb und außerhalb der Messe.<br />
Es ist sicherlich unvernündig, DRAWING IN PROCESS in das Carrousel zu holen: Jeden Tag<br />
verrät ein anderer Künstler einen Aspekt der Schaffung einer zeitgenössischen Zeichnung.<br />
Die DRAWING TALKS und die Gespräche mit Künstlern werden es ermöglichen, neue<br />
Aspekte des Kunstschaffens zu entschlüsseln.<br />

Das Messeteam<br />
DRAWING NOW PARIS I LE SALON DU DESSIN CONTEMPORAIN wird von CPCT Arts&Events organisiert, dessen<br />
Direktorinnen Chris^ne Phal, Gründerin der Fachmesse, und Carine Tissot, die ehemalige Messedirektorin bei<br />
Reed exposi^ons, sind. Philippe Piguet ist im vierten aufeinanderfolgenden Jahr der Art Director der Messe.<br />
Der Kunstkri^ker und Ausstellungskommissar Philippe Piguet ist insbesondere der Art Director von DRAWING<br />
NOW PARIS I LE SALON DU DESSIN CONTEMPORAIN und der Chapelle de la Visita^on in Thonon-‐les-‐Bains. Er<br />
trägt seit 1985 regelmäßig zum Magazin L’œil et seit 2002 zu (art absolument) bei. Er ist Autor zahlreicher<br />
Werke und Katalogtexte sowie von mehreren Filmen über die Welt der Kunst.<br />

DRAWING NOW PARIS stellt seine Uhren in diesem Jahr nach der Schweiz. Dies erfolgt unter der<br />

DRAWING NOW PARIS 2013 lädt Sie ein, die zeitgenössische Zeichnung in der Schweiz zu entdecken, und<br />

Der Verein „Le Levier Culturel Suisse en France“ hat es sich zum Ziel gesetzt, die Präsenz der Schweiz in<br />
Frankreich anhand von Veranstaltungen und kulturellen Events zu verstärken.<br />

DRAWING TALK: Freitag, den 12. April um 17 Uhr im Project Room: „Gibt es eine zeitgenössische Zeichnung<br />
in der Schweiz?“<br />
Konservatoren, Sammler und Künstler werden die Gelegenheit haben, über die Zeichnung und Zeichnungssammlungen<br />
in der Schweiz zu debaSeren. Was bringen die Schweizer Zeichner dieser KunsUorm abgesehen von einer grafischen<br />
Tradi-on? Moderator: Olivier Kaeser, Co-‐Direktor des Schweizer Kulturzentrums in Paris.<br />
Die Buchhandlung des Schweizer Kulturzentrums in Paris:<br />
Das Schweizer Kulturzentrum in Paris bietet in seiner Bou-que, die jeden Tag geöffnet ist, maßgebliche<br />
Veröffentlichungen über die zeitgenössische Zeichnung in der Schweiz, aber auch über viele andere Künstler, die auf der<br />
Messe ausstellen, und über die KunsUorm der Zeichnung im Allgemeinen an. Die Buchhandlung an der Adresse 32 rue<br />
des Francs-‐Bourgeois wurde vom Architektenbüro Jakob + MacFarlane gestaltet. Sie führt eine breite Auswahl an<br />
Veröffentlichungen, DVDs und CDs von Schweizer Autoren, Künstlern und Verlagen in den Bereichen zeitgenössische<br />
Kunst, Architektur, Grafik und Literatur. In seiner Zeitung Le Phare präsen-ert sie die Künstler, die auf der Messe<br />
ausstellen, und ausgewählte Veröffentlichungen.<br />
Finissage der Ausstellung Marc Bauer:<br />
Organisiert vom Schweizer Kulturzentrum in Paris (CCS) am Samstag, den 13. April um 20 Uhr in den Räumen des CCS.<br />
Für die Ausstellung Le collec'onneur hat Marc Bauer den Anima-onsfilm L’architecte realisiert. Zur Projek-on des 26-‐Minuten-‐Films<br />
spielt die französische Rockband Kaha. Der Schwarz-‐Weiß-‐Stummfilm wurde mit einer originellen Anima-onstechnik realisiert: Die<br />
Ölgemälde auf Plexiglas wurden fotografiert und einzeln mon-ert. Der Epilog ist in Farbe und mit digitalen Anima-onstechniken<br />
ausgeführt. Die Handlung spielt im Jahr 1922 während der Projek-on des Films Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens in Berlin. Ein<br />
Junge sitzt in dem Kino. Szenen aus dem Film vermischen sich mit prophe-schen Visionen des jungen Zuschauers – seine<br />
wahrscheinliche Zukunm als Nazi-‐Offizier, Deporta-onsszenen, Bombenangriffe. Indem uns Marc Bauer auf eine mentale Reise<br />
durch alptraumhame Städte und Landschamen mitnimmt, behandelt er auf sub-le Weise das Thema des freien Willens einer Person,<br />
die einige Jahre später von der Geschichte zermalmt werden wird.<br />

Das Imaginäre Museum von Jean de Loisy mit dem<br />
Palais de Tokyo<br />
Nachdem wir zuerst Pierre Cornepe de Saint-‐Cyr und dann Catherine Millet – einen Auk-onator und die Gründerin einer<br />
Kultzeitschrim, die zudem Schrimstellerin ist – eingeladen hapen, uns ihr „Imaginäres Museum“ vorzustellen, fanden wir,<br />
dass es an der Zeit ist, uns einer öffentlichen Einrichtung zuzuwenden. Unsere Entscheidung, Jean de Loisy<br />
anzusprechen, hat vor allem zwei Gründe. Der erste ist unsere freundschamliche und genera-onelle Verbundenheit mit<br />
diesem Mann, der einer der ak-vsten Akteure der französischen und interna-onalen Kunstszene ist. Der zweite Grund<br />
ist die Tatsache, dass er vor kurzem zum Direktor des Palais de Tokyo ernannt wurde. Jean de Loisy zählt zu den<br />
unumgänglichen Persönlichkeiten der zeitgenössischen Kunstszene, die er seit 30 Jahren belebt und bereichert. Er hat<br />
wich-ge Strukturen geleitet wie die FRAC des Pays de la Loire, die Fonda-on Car-er, das Musée des Beaux-‐Arts von<br />
Nîmes und pres-gereiche Ausstellungen organisiert wie Gasiorowski oder Traces du sacré im Centre Pompidou, La<br />
Beauté in Avignon oder Les Maîtres du désordre im Musée du Quai Branly, um nur einige zu nennen. Seine<br />
leidenschamliche Kunstliebe und sein Engagement für die Künstler sind bekannt und anerkannt. Aus dem Grund haben<br />
wir ihn gebeten, zu unserer Messe beizutragen. Jean de Loisy hat unsere Einladung angenommen und uns gleichzei-g<br />
vorgeschlagen, ein wenig anders vorzugehen als bei den ersten beiden Ausgaben des „Imaginären Museums“: Er<br />
möchte dieses „Imaginäre Museum“ für den Palais de Tokyo zusammenstellen, um diesen Ort, seine Dynamik und sein<br />
Team hervorzuheben. Welche Form wird dies haben? Die einer Ausstellung selbstverständlich. Sie wird allerdings von<br />
den gewohnten Pfaden abweichen, um frischen Wind in die Welt der Zeichnung zu bringen, die nicht nur in<br />
Ausstellungsräumen aufgehängt werden, sondern auch den Raum erobern soll.<br />

Die sonderbaren Konjunkturen des Zufalls ...<br />
Das Ansehen der Zeichnung, die als der unmipelbarste Ausdruck des Geistes gilt, scheint teilweise mit der Nähe zum<br />
Gedanken verbunden zu sein, denn sie wird als seine Verlängerung im Sichtbaren angesehen. Mit dem Finger in weichen<br />
Ton gedrückte Spuren, eine kohlschwarze Form auf einem Felsen, in Holz oder Knochen geritzt, durch Fadenspiele der<br />
Inuits geschaffene Figuren, ein von der Tochter von Butades auf die Wand gebannter Schapenumriss, Kritzeleien eines<br />
gelangweilten Konferenzteilnehmers, ein Graffi- auf einer U-‐Bahn – die Zeichnung bedient sich aller Mipel, um uns zum<br />
Ausdruck zu bringen. Die Welt zeichnet aber auch ohne uns. Verschlungene Äste, Falten in einem Gesicht, der Weg der<br />
Würmer im Holz alter Möbel – alles wird zum Zeichen und erinnert an die Visionen Novalis’: „Mannigfache Wege gehen<br />
die Menschen. Wer sie verfolgt und vergleicht, wird wunderliche Figuren entstehen sehn; Figuren, die zu jener großen<br />
Chiffernschrim zu gehören scheinen, die man überall, auf Flügeln, Eierschalen, in Wolken, im Schnee, in Kristallen und in<br />
Steinbildungen, auf gefrierenden Wassern, im Innern und Äußern der Gebirge, der Pflanzen, der Tiere, der Menschen, in<br />
den Lichtern des Himmels, auf berührten und gestrichenen Scheiben von Pech und Glas, in den Feilspänen um den<br />
Magnet her, und sonderbaren Konjunkturen des Zufalls, erblickt.“ Die Umwelt wird in den Träumereien des<br />
geistesabwesenden Betrachters zu etwas Planvollem, das verschiedenste Formen annimmt. Der Palais de Tokyo möchte<br />
sein Imaginäres Museum der Zeichnung nutzen, um zu zeigen, wie die Künstler mit ihren Erfindungen, die für diese<br />
gewagten Konjunkturen empfänglich sind, am großen Bilderspiel der Welt teilnehmen. Mit den Werken von Davide<br />

Der Preis DRAWING NOW<br />
Im driTen aufeinanderfolgenden Jahr wird der Preis DRAWING NOW einem Künstler unter 50 Jahren<br />
verliehen, dessen Werk auf dem Stand einer Galerie im Rahmen eines Focus präsen^ert wird. Der Preisträger<br />
wird vom Auswahlkomitee der Messe unter Leitung von Philippe Piguet, begleitet vom Sammler Nicolas Libert<br />
und von Jean Papahn für die SOFERIM, ausgewählt.<br />
Der Künstler oder die Künstlerin erhält eine Dota^on in Höhe von 5.000 Euro aus dem von Soferim<br />
unterstützten Fonds für zeitgenössische Zeichnung sowie ein luxuriöses Geschenk von FABER-‐CASTELL den in<br />

Abdelkader Benchamma's drawings are inspired by visual stories arised by thoughts about space and its<br />
physical reality, the limits and impacts with our minds. His drawings operate from diversions and modula^ons<br />
on the objects, demonstra^ng possible malfunc^ons in our rela^onship with others and things. It's all about<br />
considering objects as sculptures and spaces as poten^el objects. Shid in the reality, intrusion of the invisible,<br />
small disasters, oral escapings form the basis of Abdelkader Benchamma's work.<br />
This ar^st has been selected by Phaidon to be part of the eagerly awaited book Vitamin D that will take the<br />
inventory of a hundred of the main ar^sts in contemporary drawing.<br />

Carlos Contente creates a dialogue between the impact of urban art and the in^macy of reading a poe^c text<br />
while maintaining the authen^city of each respec^ve worlds. The ar^st researches the intersec^on between<br />
the word and the drawing. He mul^plies his fields of inves^ga^on and circulates between tradi^onal media<br />
such as canvas or confronts more drama^cal surfaces such as the wall. Always present in the work of<br />
Contente, is his alter ego ; a self-‐portrait that the ar^st reproduces and defines as a metaphor of his<br />
consciousness. Rearranging the environment, he plunges into a world he did not choose, he can only adapt, or<br />
reject the change.<br />
Opened in 2008, the gallery Bendana | Pinel Art Contemporain is located in the Marais district in central Paris.<br />
Since its crea^on, the gallery’s mission is to introduce emerging and mid-‐carreer french and interna^onal<br />
ar^sts through a very diversified program including all different supports. The interna^onal scope of the<br />
gallery is characterized by its associa^on and coopera^on with foreign galleries to develop common ar^s^c<br />
projects. Once a year, a « carte blanche » is proposed to a collector so as to present the works of young ar^sts<br />
that have never before shown in a gallery space. With its interna^onal voca^on, the gallery intends to be a<br />
bridge between cultures and in doing so initate a dialogue between the crea^ve expressions of the ar^sts it<br />

Art Brut defiantly resists assimila^on by the disciples of absolute primi^vism and the upholders of triumphant<br />
high culture. Rather, it lies in the zones of fric^on between these two tectonic plates, where what seem on<br />
the surface to be distant con^nents overlap in the depths, raising the stakes of the challenge to the usual<br />
cartography of art. The territory of Art Brut is one of destabiliza^on and new founda^ons. It forces us to<br />
invent new tools to think of art, se…ng aside dogma^sm and lazy intellectual reflexes. This is the guiding<br />
principle driving the work of the Galerie Chris^an Berst, which has been a leading promoter of Art Brut for<br />

David Scher is a New Yorker, prolific and mul^ faceted ar^st : musician, poet, painter and drawer, David<br />
Scher's output is profuse, and varied, striking a teetering balance between the everyday and the<br />
extraordinary, oden^mes exposing both quali^es in the same obscure character or situa^on. Disparate<br />
elements emerge, as fragmentary as memory. Muted colors, gestures that gently seduce, all coalesce, imbued<br />
with an irra^onal humor, a dadaist absurdity.<br />

Guy Oberson lives and works in Fribourg CH and in Berlin DE<br />
The drawings in black lead pencil by Guy Oberson strike by a destruc^ve dynamism accentuated by the<br />
blackness of the stroke, the whiteness of the light, and always by the ver^cal lines that sweep across the<br />
paper giving rise to a screen through which the fascinated eye has to fray its way. By intensely studying those<br />
landscapes, those figures or those portraits they dematerialize to evoke corresponding spiritual images,<br />
interior spaces, just as if our fears or our aspira^ons find themselves perfectly expressed.<br />
Faced by these visions of a drama^zed nature, black lead is also exploited to realise huge drawings that hit us<br />
in an unstoppable spiral that goes from interior rupture to renouncement. Yet again, the spectator is struck<br />
by the network of lines that trouble percep^on of the figures or the landscapes to the extent that the more<br />
one approaches the work the more the surfaces and the curves drown themselves and the contours loose<br />
themselves un^l, before his very eyes, the subject disembodies to become an imaginary landscape modelled<br />

Crea^ve Growth is the oldest and largest art center for mentally and physically disabled adults. Founded in<br />
the 70s, when the de-‐ins^tu^onaliza^on revolu^on was taking place in Northern California, a couple—an<br />
ar^st and psychologist—did an experiment and opened up their home with art supplies to a small group of<br />
people. More than 35 years later, Crea^ve Growth now has over 150 ar^sts that come weekly to create art.<br />
In the large open space studio, there are several worksta^ons—ranging from drawing, woodwork, ceramics,<br />
rug making, and video produc^on—as a way to s^mulate crea^vity and promote individual expression.<br />
Contrary to art therapy, the ar^sts that come to Crea^ve Growth are not directed in their art and do not<br />
receive treatment from our staff.<br />
Several of our ar^sts have aTained interna^onal acclaim and are recognized as quintessen^al outsider ar^sts.<br />
Works by certain of our ar^sts have been acquired by the MOMA in NYC, the Musée d’Art Brut in Lausanne,<br />
the Lille Modern Art Museum (LAM), the Museum of Everything in London, the ABCD Collec^on in Paris, etc.<br />

Lionel SabaTé works across a broad range of media, including pain^ng, drawing, sculpture and anima^on.<br />
Oden his ideas and realiza^ons are the result of spontaneous or improvised processes reminiscent of the<br />
postwar COBRA movement or early twen^eth-‐century Dadaist techniques such as assemblage. Predominant<br />
in his work is the idea of re-‐use: whether it is an outdated mo^f, organic detritus such as skin and nails, or<br />
ignored materials like dust, he uses concepts and materials as a sign of the passing of ^me and as a way of<br />
ques^oning ar^s^c prac^ces.<br />
In his provoca^ve and playful work, SabaTé oden uses materials that are refreshingly unusual, be it in their<br />
ordinariness or their poten^al to shock or surprise.<br />
Similarly the ar^st is aTracted to dust as a material since it contains within it evidence of the passing of ^me.<br />
Largely made up of hair and dead skin, dust in the home or other interior spaces is the result of a con^nual<br />
process of regenera^on (human beings renew all their cons^tuent cells in around a month) and as such<br />
contains a strong existen^al dimension. Using dust carefully gathered from Châtelet-‐Les Halles metro sta^on,<br />
where large crowds congregate every day, SabaTé incorporates it into his work, forming it into a series of<br />
drawings and other figures. He chose this place to collect the dust as, in his own words, ’a huge number of<br />
people pass through there every day. Paris is also the most tourist-‐orientated city in the world, so in view of<br />
both of these facts, this dust is the most amazing collec^on of par^cles led behind by living people! It’s a<br />
poe^c way of collec^ng a wide social and gene^c sample.<br />

The works of Mohamed Lekle^ are representa^ons of men, women, and real objects, and at first glance one is<br />
engaged by the accurate, genius, energe^c, and even blistering graphics, within a thema^c of that of<br />
movement. However, a closer look reveals, the subjects depicted: bodies violently coiled around each other,<br />
women heckled, unbalanced monumental forms, cycles launched in infernal races, all of which at first are<br />
perceived as being real and seem to par^cipate in a somewhat gigan^c chaos. It is not insignificant that the<br />
ar^st thus forces us to go beyond the immediate apparent and enter a universe of nonsense, struggle and<br />
con^nuous imbalances, a true nightmare, the very image of the world that we par^cipate in. Through his<br />
virtuosity the ar^st describes both the powers and the fragility of life.<br />
Situated in the heart of Bordeaux, close to the Allées de Tourny and the Grand Théâtre, the magnificent<br />
ar^s^c sphere that is la Galerie D.X can be found which came about in the space of a few years to bring<br />
together the enthusiasts and lovers of contemporary art.<br />
The Gallery holds temporary exhibi^ons of major interna^onal ar^sts (Richard Texier, Antoni Clavé, Antoni<br />
Tapies, Vladimir Velickovic, ZaoWou Ki, ...etc) and young plas^c ar^sts (Sarah Garzoni , Pedro Marzora^,<br />

We will show a set of gouaches on paper of Damien Cabanes, revealing his interest in human figure. It always<br />
embodies under a vigorous and energe^c line, strong, muted or vivid colours.<br />
These gouaches highlight the way he works, all at once in urgency and under long days of pose, when he is<br />
trying to consume his rela^on to the model through evolu^ons and infinite progressions around a same<br />
character, a same a…tude or a same presence in the space.<br />
His wish is to keep « the wonder of the first sight on the model ». Damien Cabanes realizes his gouaches with<br />
rapidity, according to the immediacy of a defini^ve and expressive gesture, opening and including all at the<br />
same ^me. Thus, the gouaches seem to be open to liberty of the sense and the sensa^ons. It is less the<br />
anecdote, the appearance or the psychology of his models – always named by their first name -‐ but their<br />
power, their presence and their uniqueness to being human that is transcribing Damien Cabanes. « Those are<br />
not the feeling of the model that I express but mine » he says.<br />
Born in 1959, Damien Cabanes is a painter, drawer and sculptor. Graduated in 1983 in the Ensb-‐a in Paris, he<br />
is part of the nominated at the Marcel Duchamp award in 2011. A retrospec^ve is devoted to him in 2011 in<br />
the Musée d’art moderne of Saint-‐E^enne; in 2009, his recent works were showed at the Salomon<br />
Founda^on. His works are part of many public and private collec^ons in France and abroad.<br />

In his works is clearly delineated the scope of issues that the ar^st is interested in discussing. Human figures<br />
alone or in couples, oden described in whole or fragmented, as it was impossible to recognize them. Even<br />
when developing intact, these bodies do not have characteris^cs in their faces, and therefore not facial<br />
expressions that can not be dis^nguished. They are immersed in environments that are described only in a<br />
small fragment of a white background reminiscent of desert landscapes.<br />

Since his studies at the Na^onal School for Art in Paris (1991-‐93), drawing has been an important and constant<br />
prac^ce in Richard Muller’s art work.Using as a star^ng point for his artwork printed maTers and images from<br />
real landscapes, he modifies them so that to create new images through various process of transforma^on.<br />
This change happens when he switches from one medium to another. So that a postcard changes to a<br />
drawing,a drawing becomes an installa^on, a video s^ll transforms into a wall-‐drawing. It’s inside this ‘game’<br />
organized with image and media rules that Richard Muller’s drawings raise the status of images percep^on.<br />

fruehsorge contemporary drawings was founded by art historian and art cri^c Jan-‐Philipp Fruehsorge in 2003<br />
as the only gallery in Germany which exclusively focuses on the presenta^on and promo^on of this par^cular<br />
medium. In our sixth year of par^cipa^on in the fair, we are very pleased to present you french ar^st Corinne<br />
Laroche.<br />
Corinne Laroche lives and works in Paris and Berlin. Her work has recently been shown in various exhibi^ons<br />
in Paris at galerie laurent mueller : « Correspondances : Mar^n Barré, James Brooks, Corinne Laroche », in<br />
Villefranche de Rouergue in Atelier Blanc : « Once upon a ^me... » and also at the Centre for Recent<br />
Drawing (C4RD) in London and in Berlin at fruehsorge contemporary drawings: « Anschlüssel -‐ Berlin/London<br />
». Presently, she takes part in the exhibi^on « System und Sinnlichkeit » ( « System and sensuality ») at the<br />
Kupfers^chkabineT Berlin (Museum of Prints and Drawings).<br />
Laroche’s work traces an experience of the gesture and of temporality with the grid as a structure of<br />
reference. The ar^st hachures squares or creates points by satura^ng the paper with ink. The simplicity of the<br />
chosen gestures that she describes as « poor gestures », in the sense of the « minimum », allows her to focus<br />
on the ^me elapsing.<br />

In Themlitz’s work, such moods are drawn from a memory archive that is more photographic than filmic: a<br />
sequence of s^lls, snapshots of recollected condi^ons. These are then re-‐invoked through elaborate, if<br />
precarious, mises-‐en-‐scène: tableaux incorpora^ng made figures, bought objects, photographs, films and<br />
drawings, s^cks and vegeta^on, pieced together into a habitat fit for the imaginary lives that populate it.<br />
These habitats are always far removed from the slick or the urban, drawing us into a world that binds rural<br />
custom to the lives of animals themselves.<br />

What Themlitz gives us a natural history of drowsiness, one that highlights the transient rela^onship between<br />
fixity and lightness, rootedness and flight. Here is poten^ality precariously captured. And if indeed, it is in our<br />

Dominique De Beir uses unusual tools to cover paper supports with perfora^ons. She pursues the vital energy<br />
of her crea^ve process and impulsive acts without constraints un^l the surface itself disappears for the<br />
benefit of its own depth. By the repe^^ve and relentless character of her ac^ons, the ar^st gives to her work<br />
a ritual and choreographic dimension.<br />

It was during her recent residency in Beijing that Tabouret decided to make self-‐portraits, her ideas on the<br />
genre paralleling her interest in water, and star^ng with these words by Japanese novelist Yoko Tawada :<br />
« Eighty percent of the human body is made of water, so it isn’t surprising that one sees a different face in the<br />
mirror each morning. » Every morning, Tabouret looks into herself to find this inconstant face, working in<br />
Indian ink on extremely fine rice paper. Like her pain^ngs, these self-‐portraits are washes of existence : the<br />
ink is laid down, the paper drinks and the forms of an always shiding face are deposited on the surface.<br />
Iden^ty is a territory to be explored, the place of an incomprehension, of an essen^al androgyny. Thus all her<br />
self-‐portraits, which are at once repe^^ve and dissonant, form a great wall of images: the mul^ple faces are<br />
overlaid and become one.<br />

Part of the Breeder program of the gallery, Sarah Bridgland is working mainly with three-‐dimensional collage.<br />
The graduate from the Royal College of Art in London combines cut-‐outs from books and old magazines with<br />
drawn imagery and found objects to create in^mately scaled paper sculptures or mixed media collages. Ideas<br />
of deconstruc^on from pre-‐war art movements are coupled with the associa^ve energy of Dada collaging and<br />
then fused with the playfulness of contemporary mixed media installa^ons or even origami, to result in<br />
seemingly chao^c mindscapes of our disjointed universe.Sarah Bridgland’s imagery plays with our visual<br />
memory, recomposing its tracks and traces in a kaleidoscopic manner. The Bri^sh ar^st lays out a vision of a<br />
fragmented globalized world that finds its equilibrium more and more as a macrocosmic system while<br />
stressing the importance and beauty of the details overlooked.<br />

Established since 2004 in the Marais, Galerie Eva Hober moved in 2011 into larger premises close to the<br />
Centre Pompidou, thus reinforcing its place into the Parisian landscape of the more dynamic spaces. This year<br />
at Drawing Now, the gallery will focus on Jérôme Zonder, an essen^al ar^st of today’s scene and whose<br />
notoriety keeps increasing. He is known for his large formats lead pencil drawings called “Jeux d’enfants”. The<br />
whole stand will be dedicated to him on the day of the opening of the show (11 April 2013) as an introduc^on<br />
to the big exhibi^ons he is preparing for the Parvis in Tarbes, the Lieu Unique in Nantes, and the Maison<br />
Rouge in Paris. The opening of Drawing Now will also be an opportunity to launch the monographic catalogue<br />
of the ar^st.<br />
The following days, whilst s^ll focusing on Zonder, half of the stand will be featuring a collec^on of previously<br />
unseen drawings by the following ar^sts : Pauline Bastard, Ka^a Bourdarel, Damien Cadio, Gregory Forstner,<br />
Maike freess and Myriam Mechita, each of them has really exci^ng news this year.<br />

Since 1981, the gallery is fully involved in Jean-‐Charles Blais’s pain^ng.<br />
The choice of this ar^st for DRAWING NOW PARIS 2013 is strenghtened by his upcoming exhibi^on-retrospec^ve<br />
(16 03 13 > 09 06 13) organised by the Picasso Museum in An^bes. The Museum will published a<br />
catalog.<br />
We are all familiar with Jean-‐Charles Blais’ pudgy, faceless characters, with the bodies or landscapes which<br />
deliberately espouse the chance shapes of torn posters, with the black ink silhoueTes. Such works ques^on<br />
the no^on of iden^ty, and our own rela^on to the body: when Blais creates an object that becomes a work of<br />
art, he typically ques^ons maTer, and consequently our body, and mortality.<br />
Blais plays back and forth with what is tangible and what is not, what is real and what is only a representa^on,<br />
what is true and what is an illusion. Though the torn posters are very concrete, they have only been<br />
borrowed, and bear another, hidden, picture, than the one the ar^st has painted on it. Both happy and<br />
unseTling, Blais’ works oden offer a front and a recto, a visible element and a hidden one, a right side and a<br />
reverse side -‐ for example in his highly emblema^c and exquisitely sewn clothes-‐works. Just as oden, his<br />
works remain indefinable: neither posters nor pain^ngs, neither garments nor sculptures, neither gouaches<br />
nor collages. What the ar^st is hiding from us, what he refuses to reveal, and because he is refraining from<br />
imposing on us his subs^tute for the truth, paradoxically enables us to approach what is essen^al.<br />

KATZ CONTEMPORARY was founded and ini^ated by Frédérique HuTer in 2008 and concentrates primarily on<br />
contemporary art. The gallery shows on the one hand emerging ar^sts, where their support and promo^on is<br />
an essen^al goal, and on the other, ar^sts who already have established on the interna^onal scene. Thus, one<br />
of the aspects of the program is to confront works by young ar^sts with those of established names, ranging<br />
from pain^ng, drawing, installa^on to photography. Besides this, the gallery intends to regularly invite<br />
prominent ar^sts from abroad and give them the opportunity to have a solo show, most oden for the first<br />
^me in Switzerland.<br />
Clarina Bezzola (*1970, in Zurich, lives and works in New York, USA) studied at Parsons School of<br />
Design, New York, un^l 1995. Her works have been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibi^ons, for<br />
instance at Kunsthalle Wien, Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt or the Na^onal Museum of Art in Trinidad. Her<br />
performances have been shown interna^onally as well, most recently in Zurich, Vienna, Istanbul and New<br />
York. In 2012 Bezzola’s work was shown in the solo exhibi^on „Fressen und gefressen werden“ at KATZ<br />
CONTEMPORARY. On the occasion of the exhibi^on Bezzola showed two performances in Zurich, „The Lady<br />
with a thousand Faces“ and „When I Walk Alone in the Streets“.<br />

Harald Kröner presents new large format coloured ink drawings from his series 'Cut' along with a group of<br />
much smaller works ^tled SchniTzeichnungen (sec^onal drawings).<br />
Although different in size and appearance -‐ the theme of 'cu…ng' unites both bodies of work. Like the edi^ng<br />
process in filmmaking, 'cut', is used to generate 'footage'-‐like material to be used later and determines what<br />
will eventually be seen or not.<br />
Kröner's star^ng point are two painted sheets of paper: A large backdrop within which a semi-‐transparent<br />
sheet is cut into strips and reversed so both painted sides face one another.<br />
The mirrored painted sides generate a form of osmosis which challenges the ar^st to discover a new balance<br />
between chance and control. Who can know if beauty will (re)appear between the poles of chaos and order.<br />
The process allows for liTle forethought and the results unpredictable -‐ it's impossible for the ar^st to<br />
envisage what the semi-‐transparent sheet will produce once flipped. The pieces represent disrup^on, disorder<br />
and chaos that develop into more complex alignments. Kröner is interested in outwi…ng foresight and<br />
challenging the viewer's percep^on.<br />
In comparison to the series `Cut´ the small sec^onal drawings are austere. Most of the pieces contain a single<br />
horizontal red line that has been manifolded and subdued by cuts, flips and overlappings. The pieces evoke a<br />
desire to look below the surface, to explore with the eyes -‐ to lid the veil. Despite the ostensible simplicity<br />
they keep their secret as accomplished visual poems.<br />

In his works on paper Jonathan Callan erases and polishes the surface of colored magazine pages and<br />
develops a new aesthe^c and poe^c level. SilhoueTes of people and objects are worked out on the white<br />
polished background. Surface and material play a central role in Jonathan Callan’s works. Basis of his work are<br />
founded objects like books and photographs, which he modifies with destroying procedures and creates new<br />
objects with new seman^c levels.<br />
Callan was born 1961 in Manchester and studied at Goldsmiths College of Art and at the Slade School of Fine<br />
Arts. His works can be found worldwide in collec^ons of the Museum of Modern Art New York, Bri^sh<br />
Museum, Henry Moore Ins^tute, High Museum Atlanta, Leopold Hösch Museum Düren, Princeton University<br />

Following the death of her husband, Emma Talbot started making these simplis^c and pared back images of<br />
her life with him. These images are storytelling at its purest and most honest, however this is more akin to<br />
filmmaking. The layouts, the repe^^ve imagery, the close-‐ups, long shots, cuts and edits involve you in the<br />
way that narra^ve cinema can. Like any great Hollywood movie, Emma Talbot has included elements not<br />
necessarily connected with the primary narra^ve, characters and events that set the historical context. It is<br />
this aTen^on to detail that elevates her work to another level. At ^mes it feels slightly intrusive as the work is<br />
so personal.<br />
Emma Talbot (1969, Worcestershire) lives and works in London and has exhibited in the UK, Belgium, France,<br />
Germany, Italy, Finland, Australia and the USA. Talbot has been shortlisted for the John Moores Pain^ng Prize<br />
2012, and her work will feature in ‘The Power of Paper’ at the Saatchi Gallery. Her recent exhibi^ons include:<br />
Kusseneers Gallery, Antwerp / the-‐solo-‐project 2012, Basel / The Jerwood Drawing Prize, London / New Art<br />

If I had to choose a statements, which would come closest to describing how I feel, I would choose a<br />
statement of Buddha : « The clouds do not disappear, they transform into rain », both because it seems the<br />
most generic, and because I have objec^ons about the other two. What could pass for a quote from an<br />
almanac (and which is one as well) throws a light on one of my fascina^ons: the passage from one state to<br />
another, then to another, then to another… Every object perceived is only that at a moment of its existence,<br />
just as the one perceiving it is too. I feel close to the fact that this summarizes nicely the arrangement of the<br />
elements in my work (each of which is the result of transforma^on from one logic to another), and by<br />
extension, what I hope to get from existence: to con^nuously see new things from every part of my vision.<br />

Next to suppor^ng already established ar^sts, such as Lilian Bourgeat, Mathieu Mercier, Gerold Miller and<br />
Olivier Mosset, the gallery also aTaches importance to build-‐up and establishment of young ar^sts from<br />
Switzerland and abroad, such as Hadrien Dussoix, John Aaron Frank, Delphine Reist and Felix Schramm.<br />
For its first par^cipa^on at Drawing Now, Galerie Lange + Pult will present a powerful solo show by Swiss<br />
ar^st Didier RiTener (born in 1969, lives and works in Lausanne). Since the beginning of his ar^s^c prac^ce,<br />
RiTener builds up a personal, poe^c collec^on of drawn images and texts he takes out from art history,<br />
literature or the press. By constantly remixing formal vocabularies that percolate up from our collec^ve<br />
memory, RiTener creates references and cultural quota^ons that telescope into one another, elabora^ng a<br />
universal and resolutely contemporary visual language.<br />
In 2011, Didier RiTener held a solo show at the Mamco, Geneva.<br />

Wolfgang Laib is well known for his use of wax, pollen and milk in pure, simple shapes which are oden<br />
inspired by oriental cultures. They invite to medita^on. Ader medical school and many trips to India he<br />
creates his first Milkstones in the seven^es, and starts working with pollen.<br />
He par^cipates to Documenta Cassel in 1982 and the same year he represents Germany at the Venice<br />
Biennale. In 1984 he creates his first Houses of Rice and starts using bees wax in 1987 to make sculptures in<br />
the shape of triangles or boats. In 1993 the Bonn Kunstmuseum holds a significant retrospec^ve exhibi^on of<br />
his work. Ader traveling to Mesopotamia, China, Korea, he has a show at Carré d’Art in Nîmes in 1999, then<br />
starts working on the Waxroom -‐ La Chambre des Cer^tudes, a cave in the Pyrénées mountains which he<br />
covers with bees wax. In 2005 and 2006 the MACRO in Rome and Beyeler Founda^on in Basel host important<br />
exhibi^ons of his work, as well as the Reina Sofia museum in Madrid in 2007. The Grenoble Museum<br />
organizes in 2008 the biggest retrospec^ve to-‐date in France. Between January and March 2013, an exhibi^on<br />
at MoMA New York features a large square made with hazelnut pollen which Laib collected over the past<br />
twelve years.<br />
Wolfgang Laib’s drawings bear the same energy as the sculptures. Elementary shapes with bright colors, made<br />
of yellow or red oil pastel, refer to pollen and wax while they are opposed to thin pencil lines.<br />

The drawings by New York based ar^st Jill Baroff (born in 1954) unite conceptual coherence with a high<br />
sensi^vity towards materials. Par^cularly concise are the circular “Tide Drawings” on Japanese Gampi paper.<br />
The hypno^c form of the lines circling a common center is given a precise content and mo^va^on. The “Tide<br />
Drawings” are the visual transla^on of the ^de levels at various coastal loca^ons over various periods of<br />
observa^on. The ar^st takes hundreds and hundreds of measurements from the Internet, and using a<br />
compass, transfers them onto paper so that respec^vely individual paTerns of concentra^on come about. In<br />
other words: the diachronic sequence of the ^de levels is put into a synchronic visual form. Like waves of<br />
water emana^ng outwards, or the growth rings of trees, the op^cally vibra^ng “Tide Drawings” show us the<br />
passage of ^me. In doing so, the circular form indicates more the cyclic no^ons of ^me in Asian cultures than<br />
the linear western no^on, and it is in keeping with the perpetual repe^^ve changes of ebb and flow<br />
connected with the lunar cycle.<br />

For DRAWING NOW PARIS 2013 Maria Loizidou is exhibi^ng a body of drawings, volumes and a video en^tled<br />
Tout est possible (Everything is possible), on the theme of memory and our percep^on of reality.<br />
Her drawings Memoscapes describe the landscape of memory. However the fragile paper is not merely used<br />
for drawing, but for also the construc^on of tridimensional works, which create an illusion of solidity.<br />
Oppositely, the volumes made out of hard and cold metal (Pelage -‐ visual) become as flexible and delicate as<br />
the line of a drawing. The ar^st describes this work as an "inside-‐out glove retaining the shape of a hand. Its<br />
crea^on allows one to travel through a lengthy thought-‐process that follows the ^me and rhythm of its<br />
making. It is a vessel, therefore, of thoughts on art and life."<br />
The GPS Memoscapes video subtly relates the core basis of art-‐making, -‐ the use of colour, the tracing of a<br />
line -‐ to image and words in order to describe the rela^onship between art and existence… The film ends with<br />
the op^mis^c yet ambiguous sentence "Tout est possible" (“Everything is possible”).<br />
Cypriot ar^st Maria Loizidou has par^cipated in many interna^onal exhibi^ons (Venice Biennial – 1986, Cairo<br />
Biennial – 2010, Benaki Museum in Athens – 2008, Musée d’art moderne de Saint E^enne Métropole – 2010,<br />
the Na^onal Museum of contemporary art in Thessalonica – 2010, BOZAR museum in Brussels – 2012).<br />

Located at the heart of Saint-‐Germain-‐des-‐Prés, close to École des Beaux-‐Arts, the Lucie Weill & Seligmann<br />
(LWS) gallery was established in 1930 by Lucie Weill. Strengthened by its history, the gallery remains true to<br />
its philosophy: promo^ng contemporary ar^sts.<br />
Since its origin, the gallery has mainly focused on distribu^ng works on paper and suppor^ng ar^sts through<br />
publica^ons of illustrated catalogues. Nowadays, the gallery regularly works with independent exhibi^on<br />
curators in order to bring a cri^cal eye on works of collabora^ng ar^sts.<br />
The program alternates with collec^ve and individual exhibi^ons, giving exposure to works of French ar^sts,<br />
but also interna^onal, covering domains as diverse as photography, drawing, video or installa^on.<br />
In January 2012, Victor Mendès, who was formerly in charge of PHOTO4 gallery, became director of the LWS<br />
gallery. A new showroom was inaugurated during the The same but different exhibi^on, in memory of Charles<br />
Zalber. At the same moment, a new ar^s^c path was launched.<br />
Following to this renewal, the LWS gallery would like to confirm this energy and this curious desire which<br />
became recently some of its characteris^cs, by highligh^ng new works of ar^sts collabora^ng with the gallery<br />
as well as more recent findings, by discovering new talents.<br />

Glen Baxter was born in Leeds in 1944. Painter and draughtsman, mainly it is his graphic work that made him<br />
known, in the United States at first, in Great Britain, in the Nordic Countries and in France where he exhibits<br />
regularly. By 1970, he creates a formula of legended drawings, became his shape of usual expression,<br />
diver^ng the imaginary of 30s teenagers books. Decora^ng his drawings « old fashion » by delirious<br />
comments, he obtains hilarious shid effects.<br />
Explorer with colonial hat, students with blazer, cricket players, drinkers of tea, or cowboys is the ordinary<br />
heroes of Glen Baxter. Stemming from popular narra^ves of the 30s and 40s, these characters are placed in<br />
absurd and extravagant situa^ons, in which they remain impassive. He legend this images in a " very<br />
journalis^c style, very in dish, describing absolutely fantas^c events. " (Télérama 1998) in reference to<br />
Raymond Roussel.<br />
Cowboys confronted with the Modern Art, English Pupils who " transform the meals of school canteen into<br />
authen^c food ", popular culture heroes’ parodies, such are the themes of Glen Baxter's preference. All the<br />
heroes of childish mythology are presents. But Glen Baxter address to the adults, intending his images to our<br />
unconscious.<br />
Glen Baxter cites gladly his sources: Lewis Carroll, Buffalo Bill, Tom Mix, George Herriman and those he<br />
admires: Jarry, Queneau, Raymond Roussel, BeckeT, MagriTe, Chirico, Desnos, Man Ray …<br />

If Jurgen Klauke's drawings oden appear similar to photography, it takes but a few minutes aTen^on, to<br />
realize that they speak of an in^mate nature which can only be directly ^ed to their medium. Inscribed in<br />
notebooks, maintained on a daily basis, the small drawings and conceptual studies that appeared in the 70's,<br />
reinforce this impression of a strictly private character, as if they were in^mate nota^ons from a daily<br />
personal diary. Not intended for the larger public, they can almost not be exhibited. Nevertheless, drawing as<br />
such retains an essen^al posi^on in Klauke's work. It is this medium which establishes the simplest, the most<br />
direct link with his ideas. Playing on themes and mo^fs which have their origin in his observa^on of the<br />
unconscious, of dreams and the shadows of distant recollec^ons, through mul^ple varia^ons, he makes his<br />
ideas visible, as if they were photographic sequences transposed to another domain. We could go further as<br />
to the significance of drawing in Klauke's overall work and wonder whether, with its neutral background and<br />
the absence of any spa^al reference, this way of staging photographic work might not even signify a rejec^on<br />
of space as an ar^s^c preoccupa^on – might not speak for a submission to stricter rules, with an economy of<br />
means whose origins are in the drawings themselves.<br />
As though armed with a camera, Klauke the graphic ar^st isolates mo^fs that are similar to those of<br />
photography and then places these shapes and figures on paper, in a way that is inspired by Vian,<br />
Lautreamont, Bataille, Klossowski, Artaud, Celine and Genet.<br />

The series of drawings "MASH" by the Franco-‐Serbian ar^st Vuk Vidor is a con^nua^on of his series "Even<br />
Super Heroes Can not Save Us Now" ini^ated in 2007. Fascinated by the fall of all mythologies, he has been<br />
inspired by images from the ancient Roman Empire to those of the American dream. Full of iconographic<br />
references, the "MASH" are much more than a graphic reinterpreta^on of the American comics. They are<br />
allegories underlining the failures and shortcomings of our modern socie^es. Superheroes are required to<br />
sacrifice themselves in order to save mankind from himself, the ubiquity of images sending us back to<br />
religion, and transfiguring them into Chris^c characters and more generally into martyrs. Captain America,<br />
Batman, Daredevil, Aquaman and others are confronted to apocalyp^c messages: "The day the Earth<br />
explode!", "Some say the World will end in fire."<br />
The "MASH" ^tle chosen for this series of works on paper is the acronym for Mobile Army Surgery Hospital<br />
and also the ^tle of the film directed by Robert Altman in 1970, a sa^rical comedy in the context of the<br />
Korean War. Moreover, in many of these drawings, we find helicopters, characteris^cs of this conflict, not<br />
flying over the baTlefield, but over the chaos on the ar^st's sheet.<br />

Always in a posi^on to create links between art, territory and society, Jan Kopp uses different forms of ar^s^c<br />
expression without favouring any of them: installa^ons, performances, films whose common link is the<br />
drawing. He ins^tutes a permanent dialogue between created images and borrowed images, calling on – using<br />
simple means – juxtaposi^ons of meaning and the reversal of situa^ons.<br />
Born in 1970 in Frankfurt am Main, Jan Kopp lives and works between Paris and Berlin.<br />
A major exhibi^on was devoted to him at the Maubuisson abbey (Val d'Oise) in 2011.<br />
A monograph on his work has just been published by Filigranes with texts by Jacinto Lageira, Joris Lacoste and<br />
Olivier Grasser.<br />

Pasieka recounts:<br />
“My works describe a story with neither beginning nor ending, full of promise, yet some^mes without hope.<br />
I want my figures to exist without age, neither child nor adult. They are without experience; they are nothing<br />
more than the instant itself of the image. Each image shows an aTempt to understand their body within the<br />
framework of their ac^vi^es. It’s a serious type of play, one that leaves its marks, just how a first ^me<br />
experience leaves us with its traces.<br />
For me, nature is all that is not created by humans, and of which the human is part. She is for the most part<br />
mysterious, despite the oden-‐devasta^ng effects of human nature.<br />
And there is the dilemma: we are prodigal children, thrown into an ever-‐spinning evolu^on, plunged promptly<br />
into this awareness at the same ^me delighpul and terrifying, faced with a mortality barely covered by the<br />
rhythm of our day-‐to-‐day life.”<br />
Simon Pasieka, born in Basse-‐Rhénanie in 1967, is a German ar^st who has lived and worked in Paris for more<br />
than 10 years. Galerie Eric Mircher presented a personal exhibi^on for Pasieka in September 2011.<br />
His drawings and pain^ngs are part of renowned collec^ons in Germany as well as in France, notably those of<br />
the Museum Friedrich Burda of Baden-‐baden, the Deutsche Bank of Frankfort, the Staatliche Museum in<br />
Berlin, the Germanisches Na^onal Museum in Nuremberg, as well as the Guerlain Founda^on in France and<br />
the Frisseras Museum in Greece (Personal Exhibi^on to come in 2014).<br />

Prices of the works: from 1 500 € to 6 000 €<br />
Founded in 2001 by Véronique Nosbaum and Alex Reding, the gallery Nosbaum & Reding is located in the<br />
pres^gious historic centre of Luxembourg City. The loca^on comprises two dis^nct spaces allowing the gallery<br />
to run a two-‐folded interna^onal programme of exhibi^ons. From the onset, the gallery has been focussing on<br />
young and upcoming ar^sts from Luxembourg and neighbouring countries but is also showing exhibi^ons of<br />
interna^onally known ar^sts. Its programme has a strong commitment on figura^ve and conceptual pain^ng,<br />
alterna^ng with photography, sculpture-‐ and installa^on-‐based media. In confron^ng its public with new<br />
talent, Nosbaum & Reding has always been keen to privilege crea^on by s^mula^ng the ar^sts to produce<br />
new work for their exhibi^ons at the gallery. Nosbaum & Reding is par^cipa^ng in Europe's main interna^onal<br />

Opened in 1986 in Rennes with solo show exhibi^on of François Morellet, Oniris Gallery became over the<br />
years, a landmark of contemporary art in the West of France.<br />
François Morellet belongs to that strange category of ar^sts, whose mixture of humor and intelligence,<br />
character and personality decisively induces his art. Class is usually François Morellet in the field of so-‐called<br />
Concrete Art and one could also men^on the idea of his art being near to Minimal Art if one takes into<br />
considera^on the concep^onal tendency of his works. All these aTempts to localize his art, indeed reach his<br />
work, but none of them can term and seize his art representa^vely. Through the end of the seven^es François<br />
Morellet created various works, with which not only single lines or raster lines are shided by degrees, but the<br />
canvases, the backgrounds themselves seem to have come into mo^on.<br />
The drawing from 1976 ^tled « 1 -‐1 etc. ver^cal – 1-‐1 etc. horizontal – 1-‐1 etc. ver^cal – 2-‐2 etc. horizontal (^ll<br />
#25) », offers despite the simplicity of the principle used, a system which from its op^cal appearance<br />
phenomenologically seems to be quieted differen^ated.<br />
In another exhibited series of drawings from the year 1977, all in the size of 45 x 45 cm, a simple principal<br />
formulates diverse pictorial results, simply through varia^ons of propor^on. All the works of this serial, «<br />
Cercle fragmenté », « Triangle fragmenté », « Carré fragmenté » applies the same rule: a simple split of the<br />
frame to its own limit.<br />

Claudine Papillon opened her own gallery in 1989. In 2004 she moved into a new space of 250 m², situated in<br />
the Marais, close to the Pompidou Centre. Within her program, she s^ll support ar^stes who became<br />
emblema^c figures of the gallery (Dietman, Fridfinnsson, Roth) and wants to show as well the richness and<br />
the diversity of the french scene welcoming those ar^sts who share her sensibili^es, her sense of poetry and<br />
humor, her audacity, and occasionally even her sense of an^-‐conformity.<br />
Frédérique LOUTZ – Born in 1974, currently lives and works in Marseille. A resident of the Villa Medici in Roma<br />
in 2006-‐2007, she was nominated for the Daniel & Florence Guerlain Prize for contemporary drawing in 2009,<br />
and par^cipated that same year in the Force de l’art Triennal. Her works are in important private and public<br />
collec^ons (such as FNAC, Centre Georges Pompidou, FRAC Picardie, FRAC Auvergne). In the last years, she<br />
has also been commissioned for many works in public space, private patronage and fashion. She teaches<br />
drawing in the Marseille school of fine arts. I make use of mythology and tales, because there is no<br />
psychology, only ac^ons. In my work as far as I'm concerned, there is no tragedy, no humour, no drama and<br />
nothing absurd, just an inversion of worlds without hope or salva^on. I blend repertoires to specify the<br />
addresses. Playing with sense and sound are gymnas^cs that strengthen the physical move.*<br />

As a mul^-‐talented ar^st, François Avril approaches illustra^on and drawing as well as pain^ng. This heir of<br />
the clear line has gradually freed from the real to create composi^ons to the limits of abstrac^on. Placing the<br />
city at the heart of his research, he works out cityscapes full of lightness and poetry that transcend reality to<br />
provide a ^meless elegance. Exploring the infinite graphic possibili^es that make up the modern megaci^es,<br />
he captures on canvas or paper the essence of volumes and colors that compose them. Whether represen^ng<br />
dreamed or fantasy ci^es, the work of François Avril is an invita^on to travel.<br />
Against the ^de of noisy and agitated urban atmospheres, it reigns in his composi^ons a strange serenity<br />

The gallery Polad-‐Hardouin was launched in 2001 with a tribute to the painter and draughstman Stani<br />
Nitkowski. Following the spirits of that exhibi^on, the gallery has chosen to support and reinstate ar^sts<br />
belonging to the New Figura^on movement like Maryan or Michel Macréau. Younger ar^sts with unusual<br />
backgrounds like the Syrian Sabhan Adam, rapidly joined the crew. Following the dynamics of these events,<br />
the gallery has organised a series of solo shows by Gérard Alary, Raphaëlle Ricol, Wu Xiaohai, Marcel<br />
Hüppauff, Christophe Boursault, Andrew Gilbert, Raynald Driez, Emmanuelle Renard and more recently Anya<br />
Belyat-‐Giunta; beTer known in the world of furniture and design, Elizabeth Garouste has presented for the<br />
first ^me her drawings and sculptures in November 2011. In a constant effort to discover and share emerging<br />
painters and graphic ar^sts, the gallery has been recently showing works by Caroline Demangel, Ayako David-‐<br />
Kawauchi and Daniel Flammer.<br />
Ayako David-‐ Kawauchi was born in Ehime, Japan. Ader studying Art and Design in Tokyo, she graduated from<br />
the ENSAD in Paris. She now lives and works in Paris. She began her career as a tex^le designer and gradually<br />
shided towards graphic arts. Since 2005, she devotes herself en^rely to drawing. She has regularly exhibited<br />
in France (galerie Plume, galerie Chris^ne Phal, Paris, DRAWING NOW PARIS, Paris), Switzerland (Galerie C,<br />
Neuchâtel) and Japan (Ultra 2, Tokyo Art Fair). She is represented today by the gallery Polad-‐ Hardouin.<br />

Born in 1957, Miguel Sancho is a Swiss ar^st working between France, Belgium and Spain.<br />
In biology, a tropism qualifies the growth or the movement caused by physical or chemical agents; figura^vely<br />
this word refers to an elementary reac^on with an external cause, a simple reflex ac^on.<br />
« I would like to compare the act of pain^ng and the nature itself, which may, any^me, for some unexpected<br />
reason or an external fact, begin to evolve differently, unpredictably » says Miguel Sancho. The result is a very<br />
modern pain^ng, which runs the risk of colour, and reveals a very personal language, which is the quality of an<br />
ar^st who dares today the pain^ng, just the pain^ng without any side cha…ng. Without quota^ons, one can<br />
find in his work, closeness or a dialogue with various contemporary ar^sts for different reasons: Marlène<br />
Dumas, Wangechi Mutu, Peter Halley, Philip Taaffe, …<br />
The sphere of Miguel Sancho’s drawings, when they are not directly related to his « molecular » pain^ng, is<br />
more figura^ve and sa^rical. Again, he manages to charm us with a very skilled drawing that shows his quality<br />
as an ar^st with obvious Spanish origins (Miro, Goya…).<br />
It is a work away from the "youth culture" or the current “presen^sm" and that especially takes the ini^a^ve<br />
of the inven^on, the colour and the silence. An asocial work that does not fit into the mold of quota^ons,<br />
sociology, or the “theme" that the vampires in the curatorial industry care of.<br />

Kirill Chelushkin was born on the outskirts of Moscow in 1968. Ader training as an architect, he devoted<br />
himself to illustra^ons and drawing.<br />
In the late 1990s, he made acquaintance with the ar^st and theorist Dimitry Goutov and his Livchitz Ins^tute.<br />
This club for aesthe^c and ideological reflec^on reinterprets the thinking of the Soviet art historian, Michael<br />
Livchitz, an ardent defender of socialist realism, and cri^cizes the formalist deviances of modernism. This<br />
encounter encouraged Kirill Chelushkin to prac^ce an art essen^ally visual, but more axed on the reality<br />
surrounding him. He made a series of drawings of Moscow seen through his car windscreen. «Moscow Mood»<br />
describes a dark misty city like a nocturne by Whistler, an impressionist road movie in a city in complete<br />
chaos.<br />
His portraits are imbued of socialists’s techniques and subjects.<br />
Krill Chelushkin plays with the textures of the world ci^es reflec^ons in the rain, mud truck stuck, moonlight<br />
scaTered by streetlights ... This cataclysmic realism reminds us of the fragility of being in a world where<br />
nature takes its course.<br />
In 2005, Chelushkin took to sculp^ng figures in thick slabs of white polystyrene. In parallel, he con^nued his<br />
photo and video inves^ga^on into the old forbidden ci^es and the factories in decline, monumental remains<br />
that dominate the Russian landscape with their sublime, lugubrious silhoueTes.<br />
He devotes himself to a representa^on of the reality that surrounds him: that of a Russian poli^cized, torn<br />
between memories of the past and the contemporary outrages.<br />

A gazillion ^ny white dots, dashes, and spherical vibra^ons that might be stars, planets, or molecules drid<br />
across empty black space. Where the previous images roiled and overwhelmed, these assert a calm geometry<br />
of deep contempla^on, the entropic distribu^on of dots steadied by the subtle grid formed by the seams<br />
between the ^led sheets of mulberry paper. Geometric rigor is further superimposed by horizontal, ver^cal,<br />
and, in most of these works, diagonal white lines that act like the crosshairs of a celes^al viewing scope, their<br />
spartan alignment plo…ng Sol LewiT–like vanishing points into boTomless satura^on.<br />
Look closely, though, and you can see how these clean white lines are complexes of cause and effect:<br />
some^mes they trace vectors from the file, led white in the prin^ng; they may also be folded, and thus be<br />
white by removal; or they might not be lines in the first place, exactly, but rather a conspiracy of dots. In the<br />
last case, if CoTrell folds the dot-‐cluster along its spine the paper will comply readily, perforated by the ^ny<br />
variance of the thickness of the toner –– a sort of homemade, limit-‐case laser milling. ...<br />

Dumbfounded<br />
Baktash Sarang’s drawings are uncommon and we are inexplicably moved by them. Five thousand ninety<br />
kilometers away from his homeland in Iran, the ar^st is removed from this cradle of mankind and culture<br />
which dates back to ancient ^mes.Today, centre of conflicts where different worlds collide.<br />
Baktash Sarang produces art on his own in France. The connec^ons with his origins are inevitable. He plunges<br />
us into his world. His pain^ngs are crea^ons of mul^ple layers. Recollec^on, inten^on and observa^on are<br />
mingled together in his imagina^ve world.<br />
The ar^st works with scenes from the theatre of the absurd and terror with fragmented elements, characters,<br />
animals, objects and landscapes... The spectator can not run away from scenes in front of him. He is<br />
paralyzed.<br />
His drawings depict a current event without specifying any one in par^cular. Power and violence are<br />
percep^ble but do not stand out in any unusual way.<br />
Baktash masters his skills of rela^ng either by omission, or by steeping his message in darkness.<br />
The drawings by this Iranian ar^st are not supposed to aTract the spectator. Baktash draws out of necessity.<br />
This is how he communicates. He tells everything and his drawings are more eloquent than words.<br />

Who does the future of art belong to?<br />
The worth of an ar^st does not lie in the ar^s^c truth a person possesses or seems to possess, but rather in<br />
the hard work he has put into understanding the underlying mechanisms of art. Since not only possession can<br />
broaden horizons but also the path. Sincerity goes hand in hand with authen^city and this in turn is visible in<br />
handwri^ng, signatures and in par^cular types of work that can only be produced if nothing is quoted, copied<br />
or imitated. Jana Gunstheimer’s blurring of fic^on and reality makes her work a metaphor of ar^s^c prac^ce,<br />
of the unique design of worlds whose poten^ality determines their strength. Caro Suerkemper uses seeming<br />
baroque ambiguity to make her style unique and dis^nc^ve whereas Marcel Gähler and Chris^an Weihrauch<br />
transform familiar, oden unspectacular places, which seem mys^c and are frequently ignored into artwork<br />
with extreme dimensions – something only a visionary is capable of. Viennese ar^st Eva Grün rules about self-revela^on<br />
and masquerade, seriousness and humour, poli^cs and Dadaism and gives her work impish ^tles<br />
which drive one to reflect on their meaning: Nothing clearly we don’t know. QED. Or rather – the future of art<br />
belongs to them.<br />

Opera^ng in a conceptual context, the work of Agnès Thurnauer steps naturally into the Galerie de Roussan's<br />
ar^s^c endeavour, and so we now present Thurnauer's exhibi^on on the no^on of ^me with a series of<br />
previously unseen drawings on canvas and paper.<br />
In effect, the ar^st's works naturally include within her prac^se the idea of the dura^on or ^me of work. The<br />
canvases are covered in acrylic medium, which limits the dura^on of the performance of the crayon work to<br />
its brief drying ^me. Here, the medium and the execu^on of the drawing are directly linked to past ^me,<br />
which in itself becomes a medium, like the stroke. The word “maintenant” or “now” enhances this idea of<br />
immediacy. For DRAWING NOW PARIS, a single figura^ve canvas it at the entry of the stand: a self portrait by<br />
Agnès Thurnauer. This drawing interrogates the ques^on of abstrac^on. The punch of the figure is a<br />
representa^on of the crossing of spa^otemporal boundaries. The ar^st’s body is perpetually struggling<br />
between the space of her studio and the canvas, and moreover the various ways of pain^ng: figura^on,<br />
abstrac^on and so on… This mise en abîme in the picture announces the imagini^ve mode of the other<br />
drawings included in the exhibi^on. The various technical elements in the work of Agnès Thurnauer form a<br />
concept that in turn are transformed into an artwork.<br />
Agnès Thurnauer’s works have been acquired by public and private collec^ons (Centre Pompidou, Musée des<br />
Beaux Arts of Angers,…). She prepares a monographic exhibi^on for January, 2014 for the Musée des Beaux<br />
Arts of Nantes.<br />

With both lightness and gravity, Françoise Pétrovitch always takes us where one does not exepct. Proceeding<br />
most oden in series, she reflects non the world with an incisive eye that renders major current events as if<br />
they were the ^ny things in life. The duality, the absence, the inaccessible in^macy, appears on the surface<br />
of the paper. Whether by pencil or brush, it is her drawings that provoke our emo^ons.<br />
The words, the objects, the animals, and the disturbing forms shake our habits and trouble our certain^es.<br />
They give us a glimpse of secret spaces, unavoidably disturbing and interes^ng. Somewhere between<br />
tendernessand cruelty, Françoise Pétrovitch reminds us that are fragile, not far removed from the world of<br />
animals.<br />
Among her famous exhibi^ons we can underline Tenir debout at FRAC Alsace (2005), two solo show in Japan<br />
(2007), a big solo show in Musée de la chasse et de la nature in Paris (2011) and another one in French<br />
ins^tute NYC (2012). She also have shown her artworks in famous group show such as Etre present in MAC/<br />
VAL (2007), Un monde sans mesure at MAC Ibirapuera in Sao Paulo (2009). Furthermore she prepare a solo<br />
show in FRAC Provence Alpes Côtes d'Azur and a solo show at Semiose gallery in 2013.<br />

Born in 1956, in San Rafael, California / Lives and works in Ojai & Upper Lake, California, USA.<br />
Known for paper-‐coated suspended globes and large-‐scale books containing a fervent network of ballpoint<br />
pen lines and color washes, CroTyʼs vast body of work challenges the very defini^on of drawing, pushing the<br />
genre towards minimal sculptural installa^on.<br />
A serious amateur astronomer for decades, CroTy studied the night sky u^lizing his own array of telescopes,<br />
with occasional sojourns to professional observatories, along with making important observa^onal<br />
contribu^ons to accredited astronomy organiza^ons such as NASA and ALPO.<br />
He obsessively documented the night sky and celes^al phenomenon with his signature simplicity of line. The<br />
resul^ng body of astronomical work was informed by actual scien^fic research, yet infused with the poe^c<br />
license of the ar^st.<br />
Russell CroTy has taken part in numerous solo and group exhibi^ons notably at the Turner Contemporary in<br />
Margate (Revealed: Turner Contemporary Opens, 2011) and the Judith Rothschild Founda^on Contemporary<br />
in New York (Compass: Drawings from the Museum of Modern Art New York, 2011).<br />
His work features in numerous public collec^ons, in par^cular at the Centre Georges Pompidou / Musée<br />
Na^onal D'Art Moderne de Paris, the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York) and the Los Angeles<br />
County Museum of Art.<br />

TinT gallery has, since 2002, been under a new name and management with the aim of promo^ng and<br />
presen^ng trends in contemporary art, focusing on conceptually based works by young ar^sts.<br />
Since 2003, TinT gallery has collaborated with other cultural ins^tu^ons such as the Macedonian Museum of<br />
Contemporary Art, the Museum of Cinematography and the Museum of Photography etc, organizing off site<br />
projects and large-‐scale cultural events. TinT gallery launched its Project room during 2004, a specially<br />
designated exhibi^on space, where young ar^sts are given the opportunity to experiment with in situ<br />
installa^ons within a non-‐profit gallery se…ng. Together with group exhibi^ons undertaken by independent<br />
curators, the gallery has accommodated since 2007, several autonomous teams of ar^sts. The outcome has<br />
been a series of highly intriguing exhibi^ons.<br />
In his work, the installa^on en^tled Anemic Archives, Christos Vene^s draws by playing a game between the<br />
mo^on and wri^ng of the images, their reading and interpreta^on. The work’s ^tle is a joining of the terms<br />
“The Anomic Archive” (the well known ar^cle by Benjamin Buchloh for the work Atlas by G. Richter) and<br />
“Anemic Cinema” (work by M. Duchamp). Lined up in a row, his 'animated' drawings, albeit fragmented,<br />
create a lively narra^ve. Both the subjects of 'bare life' he chooses to draw and the bare backs of books, i.e.<br />
the point where the content is violently removed for the sake of flow and union of the "film", intensify the<br />
cogni^ve lawlessness of Vene^'s images and add drama to his narra^on.<br />

Trinity Contemporary deals specifically with recent Bri^sh drawing. Selected works by emerging and more<br />
established ar^sts are kept in stock viewable by appointment and through a series of thema^c exhibi^ons.<br />
The aim of this exhibi^on programme is to explore contemporary drawing prac^ce and ques^on the<br />
boundaries between drawing and other mediums. The gallery has developed this program by commissioning<br />
works from the ar^sts and producing a series of catalogues with texts by Catherine Lampert, Francesco<br />
Bonami, Jeremy Cooper and Richard Cork. Further, since 2010, an ar^st is invited each year to take over the<br />
gallery and to present a body of work that broadens the understanding of drawing. These are part of our<br />
series called Trinity Project and are accompanied by fully illustrated and documented publica^ons.<br />
Trinity Contemporary is run by Luce Garrigues who curates the exhibi^on programme.<br />
Emma McNally. Born in 1969. Lives and works in London<br />
Emma McNally describes her works as a visualisa^on of complex systems, as a` visual thinking` around<br />
ques^ons of space. Her drawings are oden associated with mappings and constella^ons. They appear to be<br />
the result of scien^fic readings yet they have been made intui^vely. Emma has an ability to ques^on<br />
boundaries to ensure that her prac^ce is constantly an experimental venture in tune with a world in a<br />
perpetual state of flux: there is an ongoing feedback loop between her drawing on paper and the space of<br />
digital manipula^on where a different nature of spa^al thinking is possible.<br />

Since the 1980’s Peter Radelfinger has concentrated almost exclusively on the medium of drawing and the<br />
value of this medium today with regard to the great variety of media now available. Using extremely simple<br />
means, Radelfinger manages to consistently create drawings full of allusions that interweave extremely<br />
dissimilar subjects together in a wiTy and enigma^c way. Without accusing or moralising he highlights<br />
contemporary issues, which are at ^mes unpleasant or fraught with conflict.<br />
The fundamental issues of the condi^ons of percep^on and the reflec^ons on the essence of drawing are<br />
present in all his works. Through his incisive use of both new digital technologies and tradi^onal means,<br />
Radelfinger plays an important part in the further development of the medium of drawing, therefore making<br />
an exci^ng contribu^on to contemporary art produc^on.<br />
His works have been exhibited in many museums and galleries, among others in the Münchner Stadtmuseum<br />
(München); Overbeck-‐Gesellschad, Lübeck; Gallery Basta, Hamburg; Kunstsalon Wilde Gans, Berlin; Atelier<br />

The Brooklyn ar^st Brian BeloT makes deliriously seduc^ve pain^ngs. His art is animated by both Ma^sse and<br />
the Marx Brothers and involves collec^ng, cu…ng, slicing, and dicing exis^ng material into a range of new<br />
forms, proffering a relentless, freewheeling, and oden mysterious joie de vivre. His « laminated drawings »<br />
are « silly, jazzy, syncopated, and immensely colorful » and « demonstrate a gided ar^st improvising a<br />
process as much as comple^ng a work of art. » (The Brooklyn Rail, November 2012). Brian BeloT’s work is a<br />
part of the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collec^on. His exhibi^ons have been reviewed in the NY<br />
Times and The New Yorker, Art in America among others.<br />
Since 1992, the Galerie Zürcher presents contemporary works through an affirma^on of cri^cal preferences<br />
based on an “in^mate convic^on” rather than a market strategy. Its ambi^on: promo^ng ar^sts who aren’t<br />
yet well known. 15 years ader the crea^on of the gallery in Paris, Bernard and Gwenolee Zürcher decided to<br />
extend its ac^vi^es by opening a new space in New York, the Zürcher Studio. They now hold a dozen solo<br />
exhibi^ons each year in the two galleries, along with shows organized by « curators », which provide<br />
opportuni^es to bring in other ar^sts. So Galerie Zürcher is a single team, working in two separate galleries :<br />
the Galerie Zürcher in Paris, in the Marais Beaubourg district, near the Centre Pompidou, and the Zürcher<br />
Studio in New York, in the NoHo district of downtown ManhaTan, near the New Museum.<br />

Blackston is pleased to present the work of four ar^sts – Agnes Barley, Amy Feldman, Patrick Keesey, Shawn<br />
Kuruneru -‐-‐ for whom drawing is a core component of their prac^ce, whether as a final statement of work or<br />
as the basis for prepara^on of their work in a different medium.<br />
Blackston’s feature ar^st, Shawn Kuruneru, employs rigorous applica^on of miniscule ink marks over paper,<br />
canvas and panel surfaces to create highly detailed minimalist work. The undula^on and accumula^on of<br />
these marks develop compelling visual connec^ons and perspec^ve shids, as well as altering the texture and<br />
tone of each surface.<br />
Amy Feldman, uses drawing as an integral part of her art-‐making. She prepares for her pain^ngs by making<br />
drawings -‐ quick and casual and frequently cut and reassembled. They are an intrinsic founda^on of her<br />
planning process -‐ and she translates the nonchalant, free-‐hand nature of her drawings to her studied<br />
pain^ngs. Agnes Barley’s geometric, collage drawings are reduc^ve and methodical explora^ons of structure<br />
and form. Her work examines concepts of place, context, ^me and meaning. Patrick Keesey concentrates on<br />
the rela^onship between seeing and marking, and the essen^al tension inherent in the process of drawing.<br />
His work is a record of the movement of eye across a plane. The resul^ng non-‐representa^onal, shapes and<br />
mark accumula^ons explore the poten^al of form and space in their own right.<br />

Through the most radical and minimal of contemporary art prac^ces, Elisabeth S. Clark explores the<br />
topography of language, sound, ^me and thought and the defini^ons surrounding these landscapes.<br />
Her works speak of displacement and disappearance – but also of transforma^on and appearances. Elisabeth<br />
S. Clark adds, removes, establishes protocols and oden refers to literature, music or science.<br />
Elisabeth S. Clark, born in 1983, is an ar^st who lives and works between London and Paris. She received her<br />
MA from the Slade School of Fine Art in 2008 and a BA from Goldsmiths University in 2005. Since gradua^ng,<br />
she has been based primarily in Paris where she was awarded residencies with the Fonda^on d’entreprise<br />
Hermès (2010), Le Pavillon, Laboratoire de Créa^on du Palais de Tokyo (2011) and more recently, in New<br />
York, Medellin, Bad Ems (2012). Recent exhibi^ons include at Palais de Tokyo (Paris), Fonda^on d’entreprise<br />
Ricard (Paris), La Biennale de Lyon en Résonance (Lyon, France), Dallas Contemporary (Dallas, USA), ROOM<br />
gallery (London) and Site Gallery (Sheffield, UK) among other venues. Clark has also been the recipient of<br />
numerous awards, including the honorary Clare Winsten Research Fellowship Grant and a travel scholarship in<br />
South America. In October 2012, invited by the Fonda^on d’entreprise Hermès and Actes Sud, she presented<br />
a new “Book Concerto” performance during the FIAC art fair in Paris. In parallel, she also presented her first<br />

Yifat Bezalel’s work is essen^ally composed of pencil and ink drawings on paper or wood, installa^ons and<br />
films. Bezalel’s drawings and installa^ons are the representa^on of the crea^ve process and thinking of the<br />
ar^st. Her concerns with real/unreal, physical and metaphysical space, fullness/emp^ness, fragility and<br />
uncertainty are displayed in an inordinate space. The narra^ve of Bezalelʼs works, only at a first sight easily<br />
accessible, conceals a deep reflec^on touching poli^cal, religious and philosphical aspects, as well as formal<br />
and theore^cal aspects of the ar^s^c research.<br />
Yifat Bezalel was born in 1975 in Tel Aviv and studied at the Betzalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem.<br />
She currently lives and works in Tel-‐Aviv. Bezalel has extensively exhibited in Israel and, since 2011, in Europe.<br />
Recent exhibi^ons include Alice in Wonderland at the Tate Liverpool, travelling to the the MART Rovereto and<br />
the Kunsthalle Hamburg (group exhibi^on 2011-‐2012) ; VIDA Museum Borgholm, Sweden (solo, 2012).<br />

technical processes, the work of Gabriel Leger is a narra^on of man, imprinted with mystery and poetry,<br />

Zachary Bruder’s drawings are visually elegant, strikingly simple with a nod to Pop Art and Brancusi . They are<br />

Working with a limited paleTe, he propels his shaped panels into ac^ve vessels of meaning and informa^on..<br />
The polygon he favors refer to signage, banners , flags, placards , perhaps the outline of ar^facts, and are<br />
steeped in poli^cal and cultural moTos. .<br />
Saturated dots of black ink applied to the surface act as stars that seek to connect. These interac^ons create<br />
constella^ons within the shaped frame.<br />
From microcosm to macrocosm, cell to atom, everything in the world is essen^ally made up of the same<br />
material, Bruder’s energized picture plane transformed to entropy.<br />
Zachary Bruder was born in 1984 and lives and works in New York City.<br />

Established in June 2011, SOD the only specialized gallery in Copenhagen striving to show current trends in<br />
contemporary drawing more coherently.<br />
The ar^sts represented by SOD Gallery work within a variety of media, rooted in a dynamic approach to<br />
drawing, reflec^ng mixed media expression and thereby expanding the current horizons, to create a las^ng<br />
contemporary impression, of drawn arts uniqueness.<br />
The focus ar^st at DRAWING NOW PARIS 2013 is Danish-‐Japanese ar^st Silas Inoue. Through a diverse ar^s^c<br />
prac^ce consis^ng of drawings, watercolors and sculptural objects Inoue work with a visual poetry in which<br />
each work is the subject of a contempla^ve work, dedicated to various thought experiments and a medita^ve<br />
absorp^on in the material.<br />
Oden inspired by poe^c literature Inoue seems to raise various holis^c and existen^al ques^ons that are<br />
oden expressed as nightmarish or adventurous frames of mind that relate to the darker sides of life.<br />
The second ar^st represented by SOD is Rasmus Rosengaard. The focal point of his ar^s^c prac^ce is the<br />
monochrome work, its materiality and its contempla^ve opportuni^es.<br />
Rosengaard will present some large scale drawings, where he in graphite alone tests the limits and<br />
possibili^es of the frey monochrome, which involves a special focus on the processing of sensi^ve and<br />
ambient elements of the picture plane. The drawings are done on paper or canvas with graohite dust, which<br />
undergoes a long-‐winded process in which the graphite is smoothed on the surface with a cloth to create and<br />
explore a spa^al depth or evoca^ve elements.<br />

The Running Horse Contemporary Art Space, opened in May 2009, is located in the Karan^na industrial<br />
district of Beirut, Lebanon.<br />
The Running Horse (TRH) acts as a communica^ve plaporm looking to foster contemporary visual language by<br />
invi^ng emerging ar^sts from Lebanon and the Middle East to ar^culate concepts and generate crea^ve<br />
possibili^es through different media that cover pain^ng, photography, sculpture, video and installa^on. In<br />
addi^on to presen^ng local ar^sts to a wider interna^onal public, TRH also works to introduce emerging and<br />
mid-‐career interna^onal ar^sts through various thema^c exhibi^ons to the Lebanese audience and the wider<br />
Middle Eastern community, advoca^ng thus a permanent discourse in visual culture.<br />
The ar^sts exhibited at DRAWING NOW PARIS 2013 are Hiba Kalache (Lebanon), Carlo Keshishian (England),<br />
Emi Miyashita (Focus ar^st – Japan) et Alfred Tarazi (Lebanon).<br />
Emi Miyashita works on pencil on paper miniatures, represen^ng sexual organs set in asexual environments<br />
surrounded by objects, accessories and minute people. The ar^st conveys her desires and apprehensions<br />
se…ng up these well alive organs in a fantas^c world. The works are accompanied by magnifying glasses,<br />
invi^ng the viewer to come closer, and observe closely the in^mate world of the ar^st.<br />
Emi Miyashita born in 1985 in Miyagi, Japan is a graduate from Central Saint Mar^ns College of Art & Design,<br />

Myriam El Haïk (1973), is a French-‐Moroccan ar^st, performer and composer. Her more recent work explores<br />
repe^^ve wri^ng. Simple signs that vaguely but explicitly refer to Arabic leTers are lined up, right to led. A<br />
fairly rapid scribbling with colored felt-‐^p pens, ini^ally on paper in her ‘cahiers de puni^on’, then directly on<br />
the wall.<br />
Monochroma^c or superposed in layers of different colors, the lined up signs create rhythmic fields. And<br />
broader rhythmic structures emerge between the superposed layers sugges^ng some curved form, a piece of<br />
cloth, perhaps a flag. Polyrhythmic music, work with basic rhythmic mo^fs that get out of, and back into, step<br />
is not far.<br />
As for music the making is important. Whether bend over a table laboriously filling her ‘cahiers’ or upright in<br />
front of a wall, the exercise is physical. It engages, informs, and in its obsessive repe^^veness eventually<br />
forces the body. Myriam El Haïk’s works reflect on the physical disciplines surrounding wri^ng and the<br />
learning of wri^ng.<br />
Perhaps, Myriam El Haïk’s “wri^ngs” really belong to another stream of her work: performance. It’s the act of<br />
wri^ng, silently, at a given place and a given ^me. A memory that is physical more than anything else, a<br />
meaning well before the meaning that comes with the leTers of some alphabet. In her recent crea^ons, she<br />
comes to weave bonds between different mediums : drawing, music, dance and video.<br />

Julio Pastor (1981), comes from Mexico City, but now lives in Groningen, the Netherlands. His moving from<br />
one of the worlds largest ci^es to a town of nearly 200.000 inhabitants has largely affected his view on how<br />
urban infrastructure affects his everyday habits. This way he became much more sensible to issues concerning<br />
urban planning, and the subject maTer of his art produc^on is pointed at ques^oning the way ci^es are being<br />
built, restructured and adapted.<br />
The training programme for running a marathon allows the ar^st to discover certain things in the city of<br />
Groningen which would have otherwise remained unno^ced. The series of small watercolours that show<br />
different places in Groningen where he has found the same graffi… stencil of a young African guerilla reflects<br />
these findings. Using watercolours he tries to show places where the city shows a certain fragility. He tries to<br />
take profit of the par^cular characteris^cs that the medium of watercolour can offer. Some of these pieces<br />
were therefore drawn on the spot, becoming, this way, the recording of a long period of ^me that the ar^st<br />
spent in front of the subject maTer.<br />
A new series of drawings is currently evolving during an ar^st-‐in-‐residency stay in Berlin. Here Pastor is<br />
searching for places that show this city that is always changing. Constantly construc^on work is taking place,<br />
but some^mes buildings are led unfinished, like the monument designed by Albert Speer, that was led in a<br />
residen^al area ader World War 2.<br />

Ledoux, Emilio Terry (1890-‐1969) con-nues to feed the confluent imagina-ons and<br />

landscapers. The presenta-on of twenty works from the outstanding collec-on of<br />

The collector is the one who gathers what is scapered, He<br />
creates an order of its own in the universe and sat in his<br />
power by controlling the objects that belong to him. This<br />
exhibi-on presents drawings on paper or on aluminum, as<br />
well as wall drawings, Marc Bauer focuses on a dark period of<br />
History, France under the Occupa-on, and in par-cular on the<br />
spolia-on of Jewish property by Nazis. He retraces<br />
atmospheres of parisian collector’s apartments lem hurriedly,<br />
and put into perspec-ve with other collec-ons. Marc Bauer<br />
(born in Geneva in 1975) lives and works in Berlin. Personal<br />

Three ci-es, three ways of looking at a city, a culture, a society – three ways of<br />
experiencing the borders of a metropolis. For two weeks, Zeina Abirached, Paula<br />
Bulling and Nicolas Wild, the comic book authors, changed places in life and work. A<br />
game of hare and hounds, a paper trail, a treasure hunt, prepared by each of the<br />
authors led them to unexpected, unusual or emblema-c places, in search of the<br />
geographic, religious and social borders of the city.<br />
This exhibit follows their paths through sketches, original drawings and stories from<br />
the blog created especially for the occasion. This will give visitors a taste of the larger<br />
exhibit to be presented in 2014 that will bring together all the ar-sts who took part in<br />
the Comic-‐Transfer Project.<br />

In associa-on with the Ins-tut Néerlandais the Fonda-on Custodia<br />
presents an exhibi-on of drawings by Dutch ar-st Peter Vos<br />
(1935-‐2010), who is regarded as one of the most crea-ve Dutch<br />
figura-ve ar-sts of the laper half of the 20th century and first decade<br />
of the 21st. The selec-on of works focuses on Vos’ representa-ons of<br />
Ovid’s Metamorphoses, in par-cular those in which a bird embodies<br />
the final stage of the transforma-on. Also included are individual<br />
characters from classical mythology undergoing a transfigura-on, as<br />
well as drawings that can be said to form part of a personal<br />
mythology.<br />

The Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris is presen-ng the first-‐ever<br />
retrospec-ve of the work of Bri-sh ar-st Linder Sterling, known as Linder. The<br />
layout of the exhibi-on reflects the three main currents in her oeuvre: the visual<br />
arts, music and fashion.<br />
Comprising some 200 works, the exhibi-on offers a broad selec-on of<br />
photographs, photomontages, lightboxes and works on paper, together with<br />
costumes, videos, sound installa-ons and recordings of performances, including<br />
the 1981 concert which featured her wearing a dress made of raw meat.<br />

The musée de la Chasse et de la Nature seeks to examine the rela-onship between<br />
man and his natural environment through ar-s-c and cultural heritage they inspire.<br />
Through its cultural program, thinkers and ar-sts of our -me are invited to enrich<br />
the perspec-ve developed by the permanent exhibi-on of the museum. The Dutch<br />
designer and curator Arno Kramer (born 1945) is invited to create a monumental<br />
and ephemeral drawing as to invade the walls of the staircase of the hôtel de<br />
Guénégaud, built by François Mansart (1598 -‐1666). The dreamlike and inhabited<br />
landscape offers a renewed percep-on of this masterpiece of the "god of French<br />
architecture"...<br />

Paul Jacoulet (1896-‐1960) was a French ar-st who arrived in Japan in 1899 and lived<br />
there for most of his life. In those days, travels were unusual however Paul Jacoulet<br />
omen went to Korea, China and Micronesia, to draw portraits of the na-ve people,<br />
using ukiyo-‐e print techniques -‐ a Japanese designa-on meaning "image of the floa-ng<br />
world" – favouring depic-ons of everyday life during the Edo period (1603-‐1868).<br />
In his prints, watercolours and drawings, the ar-st represents men and women he<br />
encountered, using an approach that is both in-mate, aesthe-c and ethnographic.<br />
Several major themes are an invita-on to travel in his prolific and singular oeuvre: the<br />
vision of an ar-st-‐ethnographer for whom faraway lands became a daily and in-mate<br />
reality, the representa-on of tapoos and jewellery and also of the ero-cism that<br />
infuses certain portraits.<br />

Adapted to the specific needs related to the produc-on of Sèvres,<br />
engraving let report, at will, friezes, rosepes and apributes on difficult<br />
surfaces to decorate with ease and accuracy difficult to achieve<br />
manually. Many designs of ornaments and decora-ve friezes, and also<br />
the collec-on of engraved plates, s-ll in use in decora-ng shops, show<br />
the place of this technique in Sèvres. Etching is used in the workshops<br />
of the Manufacture in the second half of the eighteenth century for<br />
tes-ng transfer of gold decora-ve paperns on some parts service, but<br />
the first prin-ng workshop was established in 1806 at the<br />
Manufacture. The significant growth of this technique in Sèvres during the first half of the nineteenth century is linked<br />
to the crea-on of large tableware and vases. This tradi-on has con-nuedun-l today, while adap-ng to the changing<br />
shapes, designs and styles. Since the 1960s, ar-sts like Mitsuko Takano, Roberto Mapa and Philippe Favier renewed use<br />
of this technique in crea-ng contemporary pieces. The presenta-on of drawings and engravings ornaments Sèvres from<br />
the nineteenth to the twenty-‐first century, explains the role of etching in the set design and show the major role of<br />
Sèvres in the history of decora-ve arts.<br />

Aiming at promo-ng contemporary art through its collec-on of art books and<br />
its cultural events, every year the mul-media library Marguerite Duras gives<br />
carte blanche to a contemporary ar-st. This year, this opportunity is given to<br />
Gilles Balmet, painter, drawer, filmmaker and photographer, born in 1979.<br />
He’s been recently focusing on works on paper and canvas, between<br />
abstrac-on and figura-on, ques-onning the no-on of landscape, the role of<br />
the viewer in image analysis, the no-ons of mastering and serendipity, of<br />
order and chaos, and the links between pain-ng and photography.<br />
The exhibi-on will present an important group of recent works from different series such as Silver mountains,<br />
Waterfalls, Silver reliefs and Rubber soul, a balance between abstrac-on and representa-ons of landscapes, the results<br />
of a process of image crea-on specifically developed by Gilles Balmet in his studios and labs. These works, evoking<br />
photographs, combine drawing, pain-ng, chemical and physical reac-ons from opposite mapers, movements and<br />
varied manipula-ons on papers, and will occupy different areas of the library.<br />
