FIRST CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH – TIMINGS AND INSTRUCTIONS BOOKLET<br />

You must have a copy of this booklet <strong>and</strong> the current Exam Day Booklet in each exam room holding an <strong>FCE</strong> or<br />

<strong>FCE</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> exam.<br />

Throughout this booklet, ‘You’ means the centre <strong>and</strong>/or the Centre Exams Manager on behalf of the centre or<br />

any supervisor or invigilator who needs to carry out these tasks. As required in your Centre Agreement, you are<br />

responsible <strong>for</strong> ensuring these <strong>and</strong> any other instructions from Cambridge ESOL are followed.<br />

Examination timing <strong>and</strong> sequence<br />

You must run the papers in the order listed below <strong>and</strong> on the date shown in the relevant calendar on<br />

CentreNet. There is no exception to the examination date, sequence of papers or time window.<br />

We recommend that you give c<strong>and</strong>idates a break between papers.<br />

STEP 3 – INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES<br />

You must read these instructions to c<strong>and</strong>idates be<strong>for</strong>e they start the test. You can translate the instructions in<br />

these boxes <strong>and</strong> on the front cover of the question paper. You are not allowed to translate or explain any other<br />

part of the question paper.<br />

<strong>FCE</strong>/<strong>FCE</strong> FOR SCHOOLS PAPER 1: READING – 1 hour<br />

■ Switch off mobile phones <strong>and</strong> electronic devices <strong>and</strong> place them in the designated area if you have not done<br />

so already.<br />

■ Do not open the question paper until you are told to do so.<br />

■ You must write in pencil during this exam.<br />

■ Look at your name at the top of the answer sheet.<br />

■ If your name is correct, sign your name using a pencil on the line just below.<br />

■ If your name is not correct, put your h<strong>and</strong> up now.<br />

■ If your name is not printed, write your name in English letters, centre number <strong>and</strong> c<strong>and</strong>idate number on the<br />

answer sheet.<br />

■ Read the instructions on the answer sheet.<br />

■ Answer all the questions. The answer sheet has spaces <strong>for</strong> 40 answers, but you only need to complete the<br />

first 30.<br />

■ Write your answers on the answer sheet.<br />

■ You must write your answers against the correct number on the answer sheet, especially if you have missed<br />

out any questions.<br />

■ Do not write anything except answers on the answer sheet.<br />

■ Do not write over the black lines or black blocks printed on the answer sheet.<br />

■ Read the instructions <strong>for</strong> each part of the paper carefully.<br />

■ You can write on the question paper, but you must copy your answers to the answer sheet within the time<br />

limit. I will give you a reminder 10 minutes <strong>and</strong> 5 minutes be<strong>for</strong>e the end of the exam.<br />

■ This exam lasts <strong>for</strong> 1 hour. You are not allowed to leave the exam room permanently within the first 40<br />

minutes or the final 10 minutes.<br />

■ You must stop writing when told to do so.<br />

■ At the end of the test you must h<strong>and</strong> in both the question paper <strong>and</strong> the answer sheet.<br />

■ Are there any questions?<br />

Allow a few minutes <strong>for</strong> questions about the instructions.<br />

■ Open your question papers <strong>and</strong> begin.<br />

<strong>FCE</strong>/<strong>FCE</strong> FOR SCHOOLS PAPER 2: WRITING – 1 hour 20 minutes<br />

■ Switch off mobile phones <strong>and</strong> electronic devices <strong>and</strong> place them in the designated area if you have not done<br />

so already.<br />

■ Do not open the question paper until you are told to do so.<br />

■ You must write in pen during this exam.<br />

■ Write your name in English letters, centre number <strong>and</strong> c<strong>and</strong>idate number in the spaces on the question<br />

paper.<br />

■ Read the instructions <strong>for</strong> each part of the paper carefully.<br />

■ You must answer two questions: the Part 1 question <strong>and</strong> one question from Part 2.<br />

■ Your answers must follow exactly the instructions given.<br />

■ The Part 1 question should be between 120 <strong>and</strong> 150 words, <strong>and</strong> the Part 2 question should be between 120<br />

<strong>and</strong> 180 words.<br />

■ You must write your answers in the spaces provided on the question paper, within the grey lines.<br />

■ You can make changes, but make sure that your work is easy to read.<br />

■ Do not write on the bar codes.<br />

■ Write the number of the question you choose <strong>for</strong> Part 2 in the box provided.<br />

■ This test lasts <strong>for</strong> 1 hour 20 minutes. You are not allowed to leave the exam room permanently within the<br />

first hour or the final 10 minutes.<br />

■ You must stop writing when told to do so.<br />

■ At the end of the test you must h<strong>and</strong> in the question paper, as well as any notes you have made on rough<br />

paper. The notes will be destroyed.<br />

■ Are there any questions?<br />

Allow a few minutes <strong>for</strong> questions about the instructions.<br />

■ Open your question papers <strong>and</strong> begin.<br />

<strong>FCE</strong>/<strong>FCE</strong> FOR SCHOOLS PAPER 3: USE OF ENGLISH – 45 minutes<br />

so already.<br />

■ Do not open the question paper until you are told to do so.<br />

■ You must write in pencil during this exam.<br />

■ Look at your name at the top of the answer sheet.<br />

■ Listen to the instructions <strong>for</strong> each part of the paper carefully.<br />

■ You will hear each section twice.<br />

■ While you are listening, write your answers in the spaces provided on the question paper.<br />

■ You will have 5 minutes at the end to copy your answers to the answer sheet.<br />

■ This test lasts <strong>for</strong> approximately 40 minutes. You are not allowed to leave the exam room during the<br />

Listening test.<br />

■ You must stop writing when told to do so.<br />

■ At the end of the test you must h<strong>and</strong> in both the question paper <strong>and</strong> the answer sheet.<br />

■ The Listening test recording will first be tested <strong>for</strong> sound quality. The recording begins with an introduction<br />

to the test, which also acts as a volume check.<br />

■ Are there any questions?<br />

Allow a few minutes <strong>for</strong> questions about the instructions.<br />

Play the introduction <strong>and</strong> pause the CD after the introduction to check that c<strong>and</strong>idates can hear clearly <strong>and</strong> to make<br />

the necessary adjustments.<br />

Replay the introduction if needed.<br />

■ I will now start the CD. Open your question papers <strong>and</strong> begin.<br />

You must now play the recording through <strong>and</strong> only stop when you hear the announcement that the test has ended.<br />
