Discussion on the Perspectives of Ye Xie on Tang and Sung Poetry—
an Inspection from the Viewpoints of “The Origin of Poetry”
Fang-Yu Liao, Master
Department of Chinese Literature, Fu Jen Catholic University
Abstract
The scholars in both Ming and Qing Dynasties debated over the issue of the importance and meanings of Tang
poetry and Sung poetry, and reached different conclusions. However, their debate seems to neglect the overall
development trend of literature. “The Origin of Poetry” written by Ye Xie confirms the necessity of the existence of
poetry in each dynasty through a broad view and affirms that the poetry in both Tang and Sung Dynasties play
important roles in inheriting classical literature and inspiring future literature. In addition, “The Origin of Poetry”
used the subject of literary creation to inspect the creative achievements of poets with a completely “inspiring”
critical perspective, and gave positive evaluations to those poets who did not follow the beaten track and were willing
to express themselves. Furthermore, the scholars who simply learned from Tang poetry or Sung poetry tended to
imitate the original texts of those poetry and the creations of them could not be a paragon for successors, and even did
not have the original essence of Tang and Sung poetry. When coordinating those different opinions on Tang and Sung
poetry from different scholars, Ye Xie also rectified the problem that scholars at that time tended to imitate the styles
of Tang and Sung poetry to restore the real and original appearance of Tang and Sung poetry. In conclusion, Ye Xie’s
efforts in breaking the boundaries of opinions on Tang and Sung poetry from different scholars completely revealed
his comprehensive understanding in both Tang poetry and Sung poetry and his broad perspectives in aesthetics.
