WELCOME
Welcome to the Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival for 2012. We
have some fabulous new events in our programme this year and we aim to
provide as many opportunities for our local community and valued visitors to
celebrate the horse.
The Upper Hunter was opened up by horse and dray in the 1820’s. It wasn’t long before Thunderbolt
and other bushrangers began to menace the Cobb and Co Coaches and ride up into the hills with
their loot. In those days horses were invaluable as a means of transport and work vehicles. By the
1860’s a number of prominent pastoralists decided to improve the thoroughbred breeding industry in
Australia and travelled to Arabia to camp with Bedouins in the desert in order to search for mares and
stallions who became the future hallmarks of the racing industry. The Upper Hunter is now the largest
thoroughbred breeding area in the Southern Hemisphere and we have the highest ratio of horses to
humans after Kentucky in the USA.
Scone is the horse capital of Australia and we have a magnificent race course facility, but there is
far more to the region than this. Scone Horse Trials attracts huge numbers to the region each year.
Scone Polo Club dates back to 1891 and is one of the largest clubs in Australia. The first pony club
in Australia began in Merriwa and Scone Horse Sports for Schools is one of the most comprehensive
and largest inter school competitions in Australia. The Australian Stock Horse Society started here in
Scone in the 1970’s – this versatile horse really is the ‘Breed for Every Need’.
I am very fortunate to have the support from a committee who have spent many hours in the quest
to make this a programme which includes many horse events as well as gallery exhibitions, a concert
with a baritone tenor, a parade, a fete and a picnic with fireworks.
Please look through this programme and don’t miss out on some wonderful opportunities to
participate in the festival of the horse.
A CAVALCADE OF THOROUGHBRED EXCELLENCE
Two great Australian racehorses of mid last century who in their twilight years won good races
in America were the Scone district bred Shannon and the well named Sailor’s Guide. Now in the
Australian Hall of Fame, the first of these two, the Kia Ora stud, Segenhoe valley bred Shannon, is
ranked one of Australia’s greatest ever milers. In America he ran world record times and became a
first class sire.
Sailor’s Guide, a horse got in England by Lighthouse11 but foaled and raised on the Sledmere stud
near what is now Scone’s state of the art racing centre, followed up wins in 18 races in Australia,
including the Victoria Derby, Mackinnon Stakes and Sydney Cup, with five more in America, headed
by the Washington International.
Both horses are but two of a cavalcade of champions racehorses which have galloped out of the
fertile Scone region, one nurtured by the Hunter and Pages rivers and tributaries, since it was opened
up for settlement about 1824. Fittingly, the man principally responsible for the settlement, Henry
Dangar of Singleton, became the grandfather of Rodney Dangar, breeder and owner of another
racing giant from the Upper Hunter, two-times Melbourne Cup winner Peter Pan.
He was bred near Singleton, but was in the first crop of the imported Pantheon, a sire who started
his stud career on Kingsfield, a property which later had much of it swallowed up by the construction
of the Glenbawn dam near Scone. After his first season, Pantheon was moved to neighbouring Kia
Ora stud, one of the world’s biggest sources of winners in the 1930s and 1940s.
Kia Ora and Kingsfield were portion of the Segenhoe valley, one nowdays ten minutes drive away
from Scone, which was granted to English businessman and politician Potter Macqueen in 1825.
He shipped stock out from England, including horses, one of which, the thoroughbred Crawford, is
believed to have been the first sire used in the region. One of his sons got some of the early Australian
Stock Horses, a breed that like the thoroughbred paved the way for Scone becoming not only the
Horse Capital of Australia but a byword among horse people around the world and the focus of the
Horse Festival conducted in May each year.
Today, the Segenhoe Valley is one of the great thoroughbred showplaces of the world with breeding
farms including Arrowfield, Vinery (formerly Segenhoe), the new Segenhoe, Kia Ora, Turangga
and Alabama. Overlooking the southern end of the southern end of the Segenhoe valley is Darley,
the Australian headquarters of the world wide breeding and racing empire established by Sheikh
Mohammed, the ruler of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
Also on the fringe of the Segenhoe valley is the emerging Kitchwin Hills stud, while closer to
Scone two active studs are Ann Raymond’s Sledmere and the Mitchell’s Yarraman Park. Early last
century both these studs were owned by members of the Thompson family, a branch of the one
that has headquartered on the historic Widden stud
in the Widden valley offshoot of west Hunter valley
for more than a hundred and fifty years. At Scone,
the Thompsons bred Eurythmic, one time Australia’s
highest earning racehorse.
Two historic breeding farms near Scone are Turanville,
a property established by the Dangars and in the late
1800s reportedly home for over one thousand head
of horses, stock horses and thoroughbreds, and St
Aubins. In mid last century St Aubins functioned for
industrial tycoon W.J. ‘Knockout’ Smith and among Image courtesy Scone & Upper Hunter Horse Festival Committee
the sires he stood was the famous Beau Pere.
The St Aubins homestead is currently home for Smith’s granddaughter Kate Fraser and her son
George has the Ilala stud on the opposite side of the highway.
Besides the historic stud farms, the Scone region has numerous top quality agistment farms and
is one of the major country training and racing centres. Nearly two hundred years after the Scone
region greeted its first horse, its history continues to grow and provide more reason to celebrate
