The demand for Aircraft Seating services is growing at a steady pace across the globe as a direct
beneficiary of the growing seats market as indicated in the table above. The global refurbishment
cycle for aircraft seating is around 1 to 2 years and the retrofit cycle is 4 to 8 years. These
markets are also partially but significantly impacting the overall market growth trends. According
to FAA regulations, seat covers for example cannot be used after 9 washings because they lose
their fire retardant quality.
The global aircraft seating market is also highly regulated with various standards from bodies like
FAA, CASA, SAE, EASA etc. Standards and tests are conducted to determine their flame
retardant capabilities, density, gravity performance etc. Static load, dynamic load testing,
windmill, abuse, reliability testing are performed on the seats.
Different materials are used in the making of aircraft seats to make them lightweight, strong and
also fire resistant. The aircraft seat can be segmented into 5 main components starting from the
structural frame which is generally made of aluminium or in some cases carbon composites are

also used. Foam cushions, fire resistant (FR) textiles, upholsteries and plastic moldings together
complete the modern aircraft seat. Each airline uses different material combinations for their
seats based on the cost, durability and weight. Most airlines used contract manufacturers to
install and customize the seats into their fleet with designers, testing and certification bodies also
involved in the ecosystem. This market has been witnessing tremendous growth due to
increasing number of aircrafts being commissioned from Boeing and Airbus by Airlines across
geographic regions.
In the report, the market has been segmented by geography as North America, Europe, Asia,
Middle East and Africa. Market size and forecast is provided for each of these regions. A
8. GLOBAL AIRCRAFT SEATING MARKET – BY SEAT COVER
TYPES
Aircraft Seating can be classified into different types based on the class type like suite class, first
class, business class, premium economy and economy class. Seat covers usage is directly
dependent on the type of class in which the aircraft needs to install. The figure below gives a
revenue share breakdown of the seat cover market for 2013.
According to IndustryARC, the global seat cover market is led by leather seat covers in value and
fabric seat covers in volume. Synthetic covers are increasing slowly in demand with more airlines
identifying these type of covers offering the quality of leather at a lower cost and weight as well.
However, most US airlines are still going for leather seat covers due to its characteristics like
long durability, ease of cleaning and flame retardant quality.

The above figure illustrates the seat cover market volumes breakdown for 2013. Fabric seat
covers are mostly used in LCCs which are growing in all the major geographic regions. These
have very low cost as well as low weight which is an ideal fit for most LCCs.
Apart from seat covers there are other materials like Polyurethane, Neoprene, Silicone and
Polythelene used for foam cushions in the aircraft seats. Fire resistant polyester, nylon, cotton
and leather are primarily used as upholsteries covering the foam cushions and also as seat covers.
The upholstery is put over the fire-blocking textile layer. Polycarbonate, ABS and decorative
vinyls for plastic molding to prepare decorative closeouts, trim strips, food trays, and arm rests
etc.

13.3. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
The quantitative and qualitative data collected for the aircraft seating market report is from a
combination of secondary and primary sources. Research interviews were conducted with senior
executives and/or managers of leading aircraft seating, seat material market providers. These
Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) were then provided a questionnaire to gather quantitative and
qualitative inputs on their operations, performance, strategies and views on the overall market,
including key developments and technology trends. Data from interviews is consolidated,
checked for consistency and accuracy, and the final market numbers are again validated by
experts. The global market was split by product types and geography based on different factors
like primary and secondary sources, understanding of the number of companies operating in
each segment and also KOL insights.
We have used various secondary sources such as directories, articles, white papers, newsletters,
annual reports and paid databases such as OneSource, Hoovers and Factiva to identify and
collect information for extensive technical and commercial study of the aircraft material market.
The following secondary sources were also used in the production of report and in triangulation
of data points.
• Internal database on airlines and reports on aerospace industry.
• Whitepapers, newsletters from global associations, trade bodies like IATA, CAPA,
GAMA.
• Annual Reports and presentations from top aircraft OEMs and airlines from different
geographic regions.
• Paid interviews with executives (CXOs. Managers, VPs, AVPs, Business Development
Personnel) from the airline industry.
• Questionnaires and telephonic interviews of key contacts from different parts of the
value chain.
The key players in the market and its value chain were identified through secondary research and
their market opinions were also gathered in a similar way through telephonic interviews and
questionnaires. We have also studied the annual reports of these top market players. Interviews
with key opinion leaders such as directors, managers, marketing personnel were used extensively
in understanding the need and emergence of aircraft Seating market.

We also have extensive database of contacts which were used to conduct primary interviews and
also to get their inputs using questionnaires. The following specific steps will be followed for the
top-down approach as part of the triangulation efforts discussed above.
1. The global airline industry is divided primarily into regional and international players.
The data on the number and type of planes operated by each airline is then extracted.
(More than 900 airlines in operation currently)
2. The order status of new planes, number of planes to be retained and replaced is also
collected.
3. Based on the type of plane (RTA, NBA, WBA, VLA) and the airline customizations, the
actual number of seats per class (Economy, Business, First, Suite) is determined. This is
done for all the aircrafts owned by an airline.
4. Based on data collected in second & third steps, the number of linefit and retrofit seats is
determined.
5. Our extensive database (more than 1,000 contacts) in the aerospace industry will be
contacted by questionnaires and telephonic interviews to gather data and qualitative
inputs on Seating. These data points combined with the data in fourth step will be used
to get the data on global airline seating market.
