Historical Notes
After the skirmish at Ferrybridge the
Yorkist and Lancastrian armies drew up
for battle north of the Aire. Snow whipped
up driving into the face of the
Lancastrians, which made their archery
ineffective. Edward's archers on the other
hand inflicted great damage. But in terrible
hand to hand fight that lasted all day the
Lancastrians initially had the best of it,
including a successful ambush from men
concealed in woods to the Yorkist left. The
bodies piled high in the freezing cold, and
fresh troops had to climb over corpses to
reach the front lines. Edward's cause looked
almost lost, when reinforcements arrived in
the shape of men under the command of
the Duke of Norfolk. Now it was the
Lancastrians who were pushed back across
Bloody Meadows. Finally they broke and
ran. Towton was the bloodiest battle on
English soil and the Lancastrian cause
suffered an immense blow. Many of their
leaders were killed or captured, and King
Henry and Queen Margaret were forced to
flee north towards Scotland.
