January 31, 2015
Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen,
On behalf of the Polish-American Medical Society, I would like
to welcome you to the 65th Physicians’ Ball. Our annual Ball has
become a tradition through the years, as it brings together and
bonds Polish-American physicians.
The Society would like to salute and welcome this year’s
Honored Guests – Professor Krzysztof Matyjaszewski and extraordinarily accomplished Polish
physicians from Europe and the US joining us here tonight.
Throughout its 68-year history the Polish-American Medical Society has become one of
the most respected organizations in the Chicago area. We are an influential Polonia organization
and a member of the Polish-American Congress. We are also an important local affiliate
of the Chicago Medical Society. With over 480 physician-members, representing many specialties,
we are the largest Polish medical émigré organization in the world.
Our goals are both to support medical professionals and to serve Chicago-area Polonia.
Our Society organizes professional events, assists medical newcomers and initiates various
medical efforts benefitting the Polish community. We are a major supporter of numerous
charitable causes through fundraising efforts.
Tonight’s beautiful event is the result of the work of many individuals to whom I would
like to express my special gratitude for volunteering their valuable time. It is the dedication of
the Society’s Board, the Ball Organizing Committee and many other friends that makes this
spectacular evening happen.
We are also grateful to several businesses and foundations for their support.
Their contributions and sponsorship are greatly appreciated.
The proceeds from Physicians’ Balls have supported many worthy causes. The tradition
of philanthropy continues tonight, as this year’s proceeds will go towards our Educational
Funds, providing grants and scholarships to medical, dental and veterinary students of Polish
origin in the Chicago region - and to the Polish Scouting Organization – ZHP.
Once again, I would like to thank you all for supporting our mission and for coming here
tonight. I wish you a wonderful and memorable evening!
Kornelia Krol, M.D.

Since its establishment in
Chicago in 1949, the Polish
Scouting Organization of Illinois,
part of the Polish Scouting Organization
– ZHP International, has taught
thousands of youth important lessons
about leadership, character and service.
Throughout its history, the Polish Scouting
Organization of Illinois has remained dedicated
to encouraging youth to do their
best, honor the country of their forebears
and serve their country, help others, and
prepare themselves physically, mentally, and morally to achieve these goals. Over its long history
it has always instilled in young people the importance of being helpful to others, and developing
courage and self-reliance.
The Polish Scouting Organization of Illinois comprises the “Tatry” Girl Guides Council,
“Warta” Boy Scouts Council, two patrols of adult instructors, the “Orlęta” and “Lechici” scout
dance ensembles and “Wichry” scout artistic ensemble, several Senior Scout units, and two
Auxiliary Association chapters. In the greater metropolitan Chicago area there are 14 troops
of scouts and guides (11-18 years old), 15 troops of cub scouts and brownies (children 7-10
years old), plus three troops serving the youngest children (aged 4-6). These units serve children
of Polish descent of many immigrant waves, some already in the third generation. Polish
continues to be the language of scout meetings. In the more than 60 years of Polish scouting
in Chicago more than 25,000 youth have been members of the organization.
The long history of the Polish Scouting Organization of Illinois is truly a testament to a
dedication to service in the community and to the commitment of the volunteers who support
the organization. Among the annual programs organized by the Polish Scouting Organization
in Illinois are annual 11th November, Polish Independence celebrations, the Polish program in
the Museum of Science and Industry Christmas Around the World programs, participation in
the 3rd May Polish parade, in addition to many scout celebrations and events. The Polish
Scouting Organization of Illinois represents Polish scouting to the community at large. This
year all the members of the Organization are preparing for a US-wide Polish scouting jamboree
to be held in Colorado. In addition, the organization
hosts many events in the Polish Scout House, serving not
just scout units, but also veteran and cultural Polish organizations
in the community. The organization offers youth
opportunities to celebrate the richness of their heritage,
while fostering a cultural exchange throughout the area and
supporting the needs of the community.
