About Kenya
Kenya is a country in the African Great Lakes region in East Africa. Its
capital and largest city is Nairobi. Kenya lies on the equator with the
Indian Ocean to the south-east, Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the
west, South Sudan to the north-west, Ethiopia to the north and Somali
to the north-east. Kenya covers 581,309 km2 (224,445 sq mi).
Kenya has a warm, humid climate along its Indian Ocean coastline, with
wildlife-rich savannah grasslands inland towards the capital. Nairobi
has a cool climate which becomes colder closer to Mount Kenya, which
has only one permanently snow-capped peak left.
Further inland, there is a warm and humid climate around Lake Victoria,
and temperate forested and hilly areas in the western region. The
northeastern regions along the border with Somalia and Ethiopia are
arid and semi-arid areas with near-desert landscapes.
Lake Victoria, the world’s second largest fresh-water lake and the
largest tropical lake, is situated to the southwest and is shared with
Uganda and Tanzania.
Kenya, along with Uganda and Tanzania is famous for its safaris and
diverse wildlife reserves and national parks such as the East and West
Tsavo National Park, the Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru National park and
Aberdare National Park.
There are several world heritage sites, such as Lamu; there are also
many world renowned beaches, such as Kilifi, where international
yachting competitions are held each year.
Valley and visit Kariandusi prehistoric site located just before Lake Elmenteita. Enjoy the
tour of the museum and visit the Cave diatomite site.
Lunch at the picnic site.
This living site of the hand-axe man, was discovered in 1928. A rise in the Lake level drove
pre-historic men from their lake-side home and buried all the tools and weapons which
they left behind in a hurry. The Acheulian stage of the great hand-axe culture, to which this
site belongs, is found over a very widespread area from England, France, and Southwest
Europe generally to Cape Town.
In the afternoon drive to Lake Baringo with a stop at the Equator line in Marigat before
proceeding for check in at your overnight lodge. Dinner and overnight at the Soi Safari
lodge LDBB
DAY 3
Lake Baringo | Visit the Njemps Village + Boat Ride
Early breakfast and depart on a full day exploration of Lake Baringo with a boat ride and
visit to the Njemps village for a cultural interaction and visit the Devils island.
Baringo is the traditional home of the Njemps tribe, a unique people who are the only
pastoral, cattle herding, tribe who also fish. Among other pastoral tribes such as the
Maasai, eating fish is a taboo
Whatever their origins, the tribe moved into an area known as Njemps (the south and west
shores of Baringo) and adopted this name. While maintaining many of the customs of the
Maasai and Samburu nomads, the Njemps developed a very different lifestyle. Eschewing
nomadic movement, they became sedentary agriculturists. Even though the soil around
Baringo is not particularly fertile, they developed an effective system of irrigation and
grew crops on the shore of the lake.
All meals and overnight at the Soi Safari lodge LDBB
DAY 4
Lake Baringo | Birding and visit to the Reptile Park
Breakfast at leisure. Spend the morning at leisure on a walk to a nearby cliff for some great
views.
Afternoon visit the Reptile park.
Baringo’s 458 species of birds are one of its biggest draws, and even if you don’t know
a superb starling from an ordinary one, the enthusiasm of others tends to be infectious.
Former Baringo ornithologist Terry Stevenson holds the world record “bird-watch” for
24 hours – 342 species. Baringo’s bird population rises and falls with the seasons (the dry
season is the leanest time for birders), but the lakeshore resounds with birdsong (and
frogs) at most times of year. It’s surprisingly easy to get within close range of the birds –
some species, such as the starlings and the white-bellied.
All meals and overnight at the Soi Safari lodge LDBB
most influential leaders in the struggle for independence were detained. To preserve the
history of the struggle for independence, the National Museums of Kenya with financial
support from the Dutch funded Arid and Semi-Arid Lands project in West Pokot preserved
and rehabilitated the prison.
The Kapenguria six were the founding fathers of the Kenyan Nation - Mzee Jomo Kenyatta,
Kungu Karumba, Mr. Fred Kubai, Mr. Paul Ngei, Bildad Kaggia and the Hon. Ramogi Achieng
DAY 11 & 12
Masai Mara | Visit to Maasai Village & Game viewing drives
Sumptuous breakfasts then we depart for a full day adventure with morning and afternoon
game drives. The Masai still live as they did for centuries - interact with these nomadic
people and experience their way of life as you learn about their customs and traditions.
We are right in time for the greatest spectacle on earth; the eighth wonder of the world
– the wildebeest migration. From July to October, the fields are awash with thousands
of wildebeests that yearly migrate from the Serengeti National park in Tanzania to Masai
Mara in search of pasture. They cross the Nile crocodile invested Mara River. Tens of them
drawn in the ranging waters, others are captured and killed by the giant crocodiles. The
wildebeests are closely followed by Burchell’s zebras and impalas. Predators too in their
hundreds also follow and lay in wait for those animals that become weak or incapacitated
during the long journey for a kill. Be on the look-out for the big five that Maasai Mara is
famous for. These include the lion, savannah (African) elephant, the Cape buffalo, the
leopard and the black rhino.
In the early 20th century, Kenya was a famous hunting destination. Killing any of the big
five game one pride, a sense of class, a feeling of heroism. We may even be so lucky to
witness a leopard or a cheetah sprint and make a kill! We return back to the camp before
dusk.
OPTIONAL ACTIVITY:
Balloon Safari over the Mara plains followed by a champagne breakfast.
All meals and overnight at the Sentrim Mara Lodge
