大學的人文精神與通識教育 ** 楊玉良 * 復旦大學我其實已經來過兩次香港中文大學 , 這次是第三次 , 但以前停留都沒超過兩小時。現在當復旦大學的校長 , 我趕緊把握機會到香港來。首先得向香港中文大學致謝 , 因為香港中文大學跟復旦大學有著非常長久而密切的關係 , 所以我在這裏代表復旦大學向在座各位、向香港中文大學表示感謝。「大學的人文精神」和「通識教育」事實上有相當類似的地方 , 它們是有關聯的 , 但為了讓大家理解我以下的講話 , 我先把這兩件事情分開表述。我得先抱歉地說 , 我並不是一位人文學科的學者 , 我是一位自然科學家 , 在人文方面懂得並不多 , 只是感覺人文學科愈來愈重要 , 所以也來討論一下。很多人說內地有形形色色的問題 , 但我認為最大的問題是人文精神的缺失。這使我成為復旦大學校長以後 , 即使是作為一名自然科學家 , 也鼓起勇氣來談談這個問題。芝加哥大學 (University of Chicago) 前校長金普頓 (L. Kimpton) 說過一句話 , 正好表達了我的心態。他說 , 他在大學裏扮演著一個能說會道的博學家角色 , 很多時候 , 對於不瞭解的事情也得裝作全懂一樣。 * 復旦大學校長。 ** 本文為作者於 2009 年 9 月 7 日在香港中文大學發表「大學的人文精神與通識教育」之演講稿。
