** This essay is largely based on my presentations at two events. The first was a General
Education Lunch Seminar co-organized by the Research Centre for General Education
and the Office of University General Education, the Chinese University of Hong Kong on
May 5, 2009, entitled “How to Help Students Develop Critical Thinking” (http://www.
on Logic Teaching and Research ( 第 四 屆 兩 岸 邏 輯 教 學 與 研 究 學 術 會 議 ) co-organized
by Hong Kong Baptist University’s Department of Religion and Philosophy and the Hong
Kong University of Science and Technology’s Division of Humanities on June 24 & 25,
2009. My presentation was entitled “Teaching and Learning Critical Thinking in General
two events who gave me helpful comments.
My thanks also go to some anonymous referees for their constructive suggestions.
