Health Desnaon
Rhineland
Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Goetzke
Executive Board Member
Health Region Cologne Bonn e.V.
Dear Readers,
in cooperation with numerous
players from Dusseldorf, the state
capital, the Cologne-Bonn healthcare
region is becoming a trendsetter
in medical tourism, thanks
to exceptional medical services
combined with innovative tourism
marketing concepts.
Nearly a fifth of all international
patients opt for a clinic in North
Rhine-Westphalia. Particularly popular
among these treatment vacations
are those to the cities of
Bonn, Cologne and Dusseldorf.
The metropolitan region of Rhineland,
with an area of approximately
4,600 square kilometres and a
population of about 4.1 million,
has approximately 25,000 beds in
nearly 90 hospitals and rehabilitation
clinics. Thousands of physicians
provide patients from home
and abroad with quantitatively and
qualitatively superior care, from
diagnosis to treatment to rehabilitation.
Despite the ever-increasing
demand, the region has received
little attention as of yet in competition
with other medical tourism
destinations at home and abroad.
The Ministry of Economy, Industry,
Trade and Craftsmanship of North
Rhine Westphalia and EU-funded
project „Medical Tourism along
the Rhine: Bonn - Cologne - Dusseldorf“
sets itself the task of setting
the metropolitan region of Rhineland
in an effective and sustainable
standing in national and international
medical tourism. Through
innovative and targeted products,
defined quality management and
a variety of communication and
marketing activities at home
and abroad, collaborative partnershipas
between industry and
medical tourism service providers
are increasing.
The joint presentation of individual
service components makes
it easier for potential guests to
find this information and provides
them with direct contact details.
The project is supported by:
Rhineland
Health Destination Rhineland
The health metropolis in the heart of Europe
The metropolitan region of Rhineland from Dusseldorf to Cologne and Bonn is one of the leading medical
destinations in Germany. It is a location for high-tech, top-notch medicine and telemedicine, as well as pharmaceuticals
and medical technology. Many medical services already have national and international appeal
and attract patients and companies to the region along the Rhine.
With the cities of Cologne, Bonn and Leverkusen
and the Rhein-Sieg District, the
Rhine-Erft District, the Oberbergisch District
and the Rheinisch-Bergisch District,
the health region in Rhineland comprises
an area of approximately 4,400 square
kilometres with a total of approximately
3.5 million residents. The state capital
of Dusseldorf has an area of approximately
217 square kilometres with about
600,000 inhabitants. The metropolitan
region of Rhineland, from Dusseldorf, to
Cologne to Bonn, makes up 14 per cent
of the total area and 23 per cent of the
population of NRW.
The healthcare industry is one of the
largest sectors of the economy in both
North Rhine-Westphalia and the Rhineland.
In addition to the high levels of employment,
the healthcare industry in the
Rhineland demonstrates great potential
for innovation.
Many sectors of the regional health economy
have already completed the internationalization
process successfully.
In addition to the pharmaceutical and
biotechnology industries, the medical
technology sector is on the way to conquer
global markets. Health-care facilities,
such as hospitals and rehabilitation
clinics, are also turning their focus internationally
and are broadening their range
of skills, in addition to the sources of extra-budgetary
treatment revenues. This
additional business is becoming increasingly
important, particularly in times of
globalization and the opening of national
borders.
As a result, clinics in the metropolitan
Rhineland region have actively sought
international patients. According to the
Federal Statistical Office, some 70.000
foreign patients annually seek inpatient
treatment in German hospitals. Additionally,
there is a far greater number of outpatients.
Almost a fifth of these international
guests opt for a clinic in NRW.
Apart from Aachen, the cities of Dusseldorf,
Bonn and Cologne in particular are
the primary destinations for medical travel.
With more than 25,000 beds in 90
hospitals, the health region of Cologne-
Bonn, in cooperation with partners from
Dusseldorf, has a significantly higher
treatment capacity than Berlin or Munich.
Particularly popular at the moment in the
„Health Destination Rhineland“ are disciplines
such as ophthalmology, orthopaedics,
trauma surgery and sports orthopaedics,
cardiology, cardiovascular surgery,
oncology, neurology and neurosurgery,
as well as the comprehensive services of
the rehabilitation facilities. Diseases such
as diabetes and obesity are common comorbidities
of inbound patients and are
treated directly.
In addition, numerous tourist and service
providers complement the spectrum
of medical services. The cities of Bonn,
Cologne and Dusseldorf offer first-class
hotels, dining, arts and cultural centres,
leisure attractions and extensive gardens
and parks. The spectrum ranges from the
picturesque Siebengebirge hills with the
legendary Drachenfels to the world-famous
Cologne Cathedral, to Düsseldorf‘s
Königsallee, a shopping boulevard with
designer shops and jewellery stores.
The Dusseldorf International and Cologne
Bonn airports as well as numerous
airlines offer many connections and excellent
access to international target
markets.
The „Health Destination Rhineland“ is
worth a visit - whether as a guest or as
a patient.
German Check-up Diagnostic Centres
Individual and Packaged Check-up Diagnostics
Regular medical check-ups and modern early diagnosis procedures:
the basis for health and safety.
German Check-up provides medical examination
programs which define a scheduled
course of individual treatments,
along with a definite scope of different
exams. The medical core of this concept
consists of various diagnostic areas with
coordinated medical appointments and
additional check-ups, if necessary.
Professional patient management in collaboration
with trusted partners in tourism,
hospitality and transportation round
out the services. The cooperation of all
participating service providers allows for
no surprises, since the services are offered
at fixed prices.
A total of five basic programs with different
medical priorities are available. The
duration of the programs varies from 4
hours (express check-up) to 3 days (extended
program with additional exams).
All check-up modules can be combined as
needed.
Sleep Medicine at the Helios Clinic in Siegburg
under the Direction of Prof. Dr. med. Naim
A good night‘s sleep is vital. However, several mechanisms can prevent
this and form an insidious risk.
Under the direction of Prof. Ramin Naim,
you can restore your quality of life and
improve your health with sleep medicine
diagnoses and therapy. The diagnosis, divided
into four different stages, is important
in this context, allowing an accurate
and successful treatment plan. Snoring is
often a symptom of sleep apnoea disorder
(unrestful sleep with apnoea). If the
outpatient sleep exam cannot provide a
definitive diagnosis of the sleep disorder,
sleep laboratory testing is the next critical
step.
The process begins in the evening and
you are released after breakfast so as not
to interrupt your working life.
This form of therapy is effective:
The first results of the customized treatment
include a rapidly increased ability
to concentrate and an improved sense of
well-being.
The Dental Practice am Lindenhof
Naturalness, aesthetics and functionality in the mouth
Modern dentistry offers great possibilities
for recreating dentures as perfect as natural teeth.
Dentistry
The Lindenhof dental clinic in Sankt Augustin
specializes in aesthetic and reconstructive
dentistry for adults and
children. The aim of the aesthetic and
reconstructive dentistry is dental health
care that not only functions well, but
is also aesthetically sophisticated. Diseased
tooth structure is replaced by
special biocompatible ceramic materials.
Ceramic is much more similar to the natural
tooth structure than gold and can
be attached to the natural tooth adhesive,
so that a real connection between
the ceramic and tooth arises. The clinic‘s
„digital dentistry“ allows the preparation
of ceramic crowns and fillings in just one
treatment session, without tedious dental
impressions or corrections.
A dental restoration can be completed in
a very short time. Extensive treatments
can be performed with local or full
anaesthesia, as requested - for example,
by means of nitrous oxide sedation for
children or anxious patients.
Bonn Köln Düsseldorf
aesthetic clinic Dr. Dr. med. Stein Tveten
„Beauty Goes Natural“
Dr. Dr. med. Stein Tveten
Born in Oslo, the doctor
studied medicine and then
dentistry in Germany. He
obtained licensing approvals
in Norway and Germany.
After his residency for oral and maxillofacial
surgery in Essen, he treated severe
accidental injuries to the face as a chief
consultant in reconstructive surgery in
Oslo. This led to his growing interest in
cosmetic surgery.
Dr. Dr. Stein Tveten opened his first clinic
specializing in plastic surgery in Oslo in
1999, which today has a network of more
than 80 anti-aging clinics.
There has been a third aesthetic clinic in
Bad Honnef near Bonn since 2006, in addition
to a private clinic in the Oberallgäu
region. Here, the focus is also on holistic
cosmetic medicine with non-surgical and
surgical treatments.
Years of experience in aesthetic medicine and dermatological cosmetics
combine the best methods to form an effective rejuvenation concept.
Dr. Dr. Tveten has been a specialist in injections
with hyaluronic acid and the use
of botulinum toxin type A, or Botox, for
over 16 years. With hyaluronic acid, a socalled
filler, wrinkles in the face area are
padded and in this way lifted or filled. In
the case of Botox, certain muscle impulses
are „immobilized“ for a period of a
few months, so that the face appears relaxed
and youthful.
Dr. Dr. Stein Tveten has many years of experience
in aesthetic medicine and dermatological
cosmetics, from which he
combines the best methods to form an
effective rejuvenation concept.
In the aesthetic clinics, you receive treatment
only from the best-trained doctors
and therapists with extensive experience
in the latest techniques and technologies.
These specialists take a great deal
of time and care for the individual and
intensive consultation so as to discuss
your available options in detail.
The goal of aesthetic clinics is to emphasize
your very own radiance, offering
the aesthetic correction to achieve the
best results for you. The aesthetic clinics
take your personal desires and medical
criteria into account to create your own
personalized treatment plan. You as a
person are the centre of attention in the
aesthetic clinics, and it is extremely important
to them that they achieve natural
results and satisfied clients.
The range of services offered by the
aesthetic clinics cover all areas of aesthetic
plastic surgery:
Dr. Schlossberger Clinic at Alter Markt
Cosmetic Dermatology in the Heart of Cologne
„Look as young as you feel!“ That is the motto of Dr. Uta Schlossberger
and her Dermatology team at Alter Markt in Cologne.
Come in and feel comfortable...
... this can be taken literally coming from
Dr. Schlossberger. The specialist in dermatology
focuses on gentle, effective – and
above all – customised treatments to reduce
the signs of aging of the skin and other
undesirable dermatological phenomena.
Wrinkle treatments with botulinum toxin
(Botox) or hyaluronic acid as well as combination
treatments are very popular. Hyaluronic
acid is also the drug of choice for
lip injections, the treatment of scars and
the correction of hollow cheeks and contour
defects. With the blunt Pix‘L cannula,
Dr. Schlossberger is able to inject the
skin in a manner that is particularly low in
terms of pain and side effects. This includes
the eye region and large-scale operations,
such as the soft volume lift, a special
„volume facelift“ that is non-invasive.
A special area of expertise of Dr. Schlossberger
is hand rejuvenation: hyaluronic
acid, laser, IPL or chemical peels make
every handshake nice. Laser treatments
for scars and wrinkles as well as permanent
hair removal are also requested
frequently. Dr. Schlossberger also treats
spider veins, burst veins and varicose veins
using injections and laser treatments.
The patient as focus
The patient is the focus at the practice at
Alter Markt in Cologne. This includes not
only first-class consultation and treatment,
but also an all-around feeling of
wellness. Besides the German language,
consultations are available in in English,
French, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, Italian,
Portuguese and Greek.
The doctors at the clinic are all members
of the most prestigious professional societies
relevant to the fields of dermatology,
allergology, dermatological aesthetics
and cosmetics and they are also
active as speakers. By continuously participating
in training at the highest national
and international levels, they are always
on the cutting edge of dermatological research
and therapy. The practice is voluntarily
subject to the quality management
of the TÜV and is re-assessed annually.
The goal of their work is the best possible
restaurant, a medical supply shop, a
hairdresser and a kiosk are also available
to the patients. Internet access in the
patient‘s room, multilingual TV programs,
Bonn Köln Düsseldorf
Obtain a „Second Opinion“
Will I be treated properly
What options does modern medicine offer for the treatment of my illness
Is surgery really necessary
It is difficult for a patient to judge whether
or not a therapy for a severe illness
is up-to-date medically and if it is the best
option for treatment. Medical services
around the world vary in quality. For this
reason, more and more people travel abroad
to receive medical treatment.
However, it is not always necessary to go
to Germany. Treatment may not be necessary
at all if the diagnosis in the native
country was incorrect. Moreover, not
everyone can afford treatment in Germany.
There are also situations in which the
patient is in critical condition and travel
can be life-threatening. This is when it is
extremely important to seek the opinion
of qualified foreign doctors in order to
make the right decision.
For such cases, a special product was
designed for foreign patients: „Second
Opinion“. The „Second Opinion“ is an expert
review of the medical documents by
German specialists. The patient is better
informed and can make the right decision
for further treatment. Many foreign doctors
welcome such assessments. Some
even insist, since they understand that
the level of knowledge and the capabilities
of medicine are very different from
country to country. The help and experience
of foreign colleagues can be very
useful, particularly in difficult cases.
Important questions that can be answered
with the „Second Opinion“:
••
Are the diagnosis and the stage of
disease correct
••
Do I really need the proposed treatment/surgery
••
Are there alternative/new treatments
and medications
••
Do I need to travel to Germany for
treatment
The specialists chosen for the evaluation
are specialized in a particular area and
have gained many years of experience.
The following documents are required to
obtain a „Second Opinion“:
••
laboratory values,
••
all examination and surgical findings,
••
a detailed medical history
••
a list of medications, and
••
histological findings and images in
chronological order.
It is also important to formulate all sorts
of questions for the doctor. The documents
should preferably be translated
into English or German. If this is not possible,
a qualified translator will provide
the corresponding translation. All documents
will be securely transmitted to the
appropriate specialist. Depending on the
situation, the request will be processed
within 1-5 days. A foreign patient receives
a detailed medical report with recommendations
for all possible treatments,
which can be translated into the local
language. Of course, it is still possible to
arrange treatment in Germany after the
„Second Opinion“.
These remote consultations help make
the right decision, get a qualified recommendation
in time and correct the treatment
plan, if necessary. Apart from the
medical reassurance, this can also save
time and money.
The wish for a child is one of the most
natural and most beautiful feelings that
a couple can share. Unfortunately, there
may be many reasons why such wishes
remain unfulfilled. Now, however, it is
possible to better identify and treat the
causes.
At the interdisciplinary centre in the PAN
Clinic, all employees work hard to help
fulfil your dream of having a child – and,
as evidenced by consistently high pregnancy
and birth rates, with above-average
success.
Miracles cannot be promised, however.
Based on many years of experience and
by using the latest treatment methods,
the MVZ PAN Institute of Endocrinology
and Reproductive Medicine is often able
to help. The interdisciplinary collaboration
enables the rapid clarification of the
causes of disease and the best treatment.
This is not only medically but also
psychologically necessary, because infertility
is a major challenge for the psyche,
as well.
is the Coordinator of Uni-
KiD Fertility Centre at the
University Hospital Dusseldorf,
a specialist in gynaecology
and obstetrics with an emphasis
on endocrinological gynaecology and
reproductive medicine. After medical studies
and specialist training in gynaecology
and obstetrics at the University Women‘s
Clinic at the Heinrich-Heine University in
Dusseldorf, Prof. Krüssel is now the Coordinator
of UniKiD as well as a Professor in
the Faculty of Medicine at the Heinrich-
Heine University.
„UniKiD“: The Fertility Centre
at the University Hospital Dusseldorf
Interdisciplinary treatment at the highest scientific level of a university
hospital and the personal service of an ultra-modern private practice.
For many couples, infertility is a strong
psychological and physical stress and the
search for the causes and treatment options
are often expensive and tedious.
To better aide infertile couples, the University
Hospital of Dusseldorf set up the University
Interdisciplinary Fertility Centre
Dusseldorf (UniKiD) under the auspices of
the Women‘s Clinic. Today, with more than
800 oocyte retrievals per year, it is one of
the leading fertility centres in Germany.
There has been a fertility clinic in the
Women‘s Clinic of the University Hospital
Dusseldorf (UKD) for 20 years. To date, several
thousand treatments have been carried
out there.
The treatment process
First, the treatment team at the UniKiD
attempts to find a clear diagnosis of the
cause of infertility. Since the cause of infertility
can be varied, these tests, which
are always performed for both partners,
can take a little time. After a clear explanation
is found, a treatment plan tailored
to your diagnosis is developed. Your physician
then discusses the plan, the duration
of the treatment and the individual
therapy steps with you in detail.
Interdisciplinary collaboration
In the UniKiD, specialists from the areas
of gynaecological endocrinology and reproductive
medicine, andrology, urology,
psychosomatic medicine and human
genetics look after the patients. Thanks
to the integration of UniKiD in the University
Hospital Dusseldorf, our patients
always receive optimal medical care.
Consiliary exams in the fields of internal
medicine, neurology, coagulation system
and transfusion medicine, anaesthesia,
and other disciplines are available
at any time.
International cooperation and scientific
activities
The focus of the scientific work in Uni-
KiD is the study of the causes of infertility
and the advancement of fertility
techniques. The high scientific level of
the working group is evidenced by more
than 100 national and international publications,
book and poster contributions,
along with lectures, on-going grants
from the German Research Association
(DFG) and national and international
collaborations. In addition, our patients
benefit from international collaboration
with renowned universities in the U.S.,
Europe and Asia. In this way, the team
can take advantage of the most up-todate
knowledge from international scientists.
For a particular feeling of well-being
The primary objective of UniKiD is the
well-being of patients. To this end, the
following amenities are available:
••
Appointments to suit individual needs,
practically without waiting times
••
Patient-friendly opening hours (discrete
treatments in a private and professional
sense)
••
Direct access to the University Hospital
Dusseldorf for UniKiD patients, with
dedicated parking right outside the
door of the centre
••
Special comfort service with drinks
Rhineland
Bonn: „Gateway to the Romantic Rhine“
Bonn surprises with its ever-changing faces: Two thousand years of history, Beethoven‘s birthplace, the city
along the Romantic Rhine, former federal capital, the German UN city and an impressive cultural landscape
invite visitors to explore.
Baroque Splendour and Elegant Flair
Many buildings in Bonn stem from the
times of the prince-electors, when the
city was the seat of royal power. The university
is located in the former Royal Palace
and the rococo Town Hall continues
to receive guests at the most prominent
location downtown.
Beethoven‘s Birthplace
Beethoven‘s birthplace
is not far from the residential
palace. As a museum,
it tells of the life
of the world famous musician
and is much-loved
by national and international guests. The
Beethoven Festival takes place each fall
in honour of the great composer, and
musicians and ensembles from around
the world come to Bonn to perform.
A Must: the Museum Mile
The Museum Mile with its exciting exhibits
is very popular with art lovers from
home and abroad. The Art and Exhibition
Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany,
which often houses up to five different
exhibits, the Bonn Art Museum with the
Rhenish Expressionists and German art
after 1945, and the Museum of the History
of the Federal Republic of Germany
with its astonishing enactments of the
recent past - these buildings are also exciting
from an architectural point of view.
The German Museum in Bonn - the first
museum of contemporary research and
technology in Germany - and the redesigned
Museum Koenig, one of the finest
natural history museums in the country,
are also very popular with young visitors.
There‘s more, however: the Rhenish
State Museum, the Arithmeum, the
Women‘s Museum, the August Macke
House and many others. For a city of
about 320,000 inhabitants, the range of
museums is impressive.
On the Trail of the Capital City Era
In the former government district, visitors
can wander the traces of the capital
city era. On the „Path of Democracy“, visitors
pass by the political stations from
the past 60 years: like the Villa Hammerschmidt,
today official residence of the
Chancellor, and the Chancellor‘s bungalow,
which contains the representative
and the private rooms of the Chancellor.
Castles and Unspoiled Nature along the
Rhine
The Siebengebirge next to Bonn with
their legendary Drachenfels and the
historic Petersberg form the gate to the
Romantic Rhine. With the Drachenfelsbahn,
the oldest rack-and-pinion railway
in Germany, visitors
travel up to the plateau
of the most-frequented
mountain in the country.
Halfway up is Drachenburg
Castle, which has
been lovingly restored
and is affectionately called „Neuschwanstein
on the Rhine“.
„Rhine in Flames“
Every year on the first Saturday
in May, the Rhine
and its castles and attractions
from Linz to Bonn
shine in magical red light
and an illuminated boat
parade travels along the river up to the
Bonn Rheinaue Leisure Park, where a
dramatic fireworks show synchronized
with music concludes the evening.
Cologne: „The Vibrant Cultural Metropolis on the Rhine“
The landmark of the bustling metropolis on the Rhine is the world-famous Cologne Cathedral. The Old Town
with its typical „Kölsch“ flair is located within walking distance of the shopping district. Cologne is the capital
of the Rhenish lifestyle, and apart from the Carnival and the many cultural and artistic highlights, offers
many special experiences for younger visitors, as well.
The Vibrant City on the Rhine
Cologne offers a vibrant cultural life,
international trade fairs and congresses
and countless large-scale events.
Attractions like the Cologne Cathedral,
a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the
twelve great Romanesque churches in
Cologne create unforgettable experiences.
In addition, the cathedral city has
many museums and galleries which offer
the most diverse exhibits on the city‘s
history as well as modern and contemporary
subjects. Shopping streets, alleys
and unique flair: Cologne is an insider tip
among the shopping centres in Germany.
Not to mention the exceptional nightlife;
Cologne has the highest density of bars
in Germany. 3300 gastronomic operations
invite guests to enjoy a cold Kölsch.
A Modern City with
2,000 Years of History
Cologne‘s 2,000 year
history can be experienced
everywhere: in
a visit to the Roman-
Germanic Museum, the
Roman Praetorium, or a stroll past medieval
city gates. The Cologne Cathedral
is not only a number-one attraction
in the city, but in all of Germany. More
than 6.5 million people a year visit the
UNESCO World Heritage Site. The imposing
Gothic cathedral houses the Shrine
of the Three Kings, and there are twelve
other great Romanesque churches that
make „Holy Cologne“ one of the most
important pilgrimage sites in Europe.
Outstanding Arts and Culture Scene
42 museums and 120 galleries with a
variety of collections from all periods
testify to Cologne‘s reputation as an arts
and cultural centre. In addition, Cologne
has a very lively theatre
scene. Productions of
opera and plays as well
as numerous literary and
film events round out the
city‘s colourful cultural
options.
Experiences for the Whole Family
The Cologne Zoo is the third oldest zoo
in Germany and enjoys lasting popularity
with its 20,000 m² elephant park and
the elephant children Marlar, Ming Jung,
Maha Kumari and Khin Yadanar Min.
Cologne’s sweetest museum is the Chocolate
Museum. Here, visitors learn
about the production of the popular delicacy,
before being able to enjoy the finest
chocolate from a real chocolate fountain.
Next door, at the German Sports and
Olympic Museum, visitors can admire the
extensive sports history exhibits. Other
highlights include the Odysseum, a huge
interactive experience for the whole family
with over 5,500 m² to explore experiments.
The famous Phantasialand in neighbouring
Brühl offers an exciting amusement park
experience for young and old.
Traditional Brewery Culture
Visitors can best experience
Cologne‘s „Kölsch“
culture in the Old Town.
Just steps away from the
cathedral, characteristic,
bright gabled houses
line the Rhine promenade.
In the many brewpubs, visitors
always enjoy a Kölsch, a top-fermented
beer, which may only be brewed in Cologne
and is served in „Stangen“, long,
thin cylindrical glasses by „Köbes“, traditional
Kölsch waiters. Cologne cuisine,
including specialties such as the „Halven
Hahn“, „Himmel un Ääd“ or „Kölsch caviar“,
pair well with the beer. The „kölsch“
lifestyle is infectious, and reason enough
to visit Cologne.
Shopping in the region combines fascinating variety -
Dusseldorf, Cologne and Bonn
Apart from high-class medical care, excellence in research, development, and medical technology and a fullservice
support at the highest level, the Rhineland metropolitan region offers its guests from home and abroad
unique culture, shopping and lifestyle. From culinary experiences to action-charged highlights, there is
something for every visitor.
Cologne:
the shopping city
As a centre of trade, Cologne
has been of great economic
importance since
the Middle Ages, long
ago developing the ideal
conditions for long-distance trade in the
European economic realm. The excellent
transport infrastructure has been preserved
up to the modern day in Cologne. A
particular feature of Cologne is the accessibility
of the numerous shopping areas by
foot; Cologne is a shopping city with a very
unique, eclectic and diverse flair.
Schildergasse and Hohe Straße
The Schildergasse has
numerous flagship stores
and many well-known
brands. As the most-frequently
visited and most
popular shopping street
in Germany, the Schildergasse
attracts audiences from around
the world, not only due to its wide range
of clothing stores, but also its vegetable,
flower and fruit stalls. The Hohe Straße
was likely the first paved street in the city
in Roman times. Over time, it gained increasing
importance as the centre for societal
life in the city. Today it is the heart
of Cologne‘s shopping world. The Hohe
Straße appeals primarily to younger
shoppers, since it is filled with national
and international fashion stores that
cater to a younger audience. High-end
companies have established branches on
the street in the direction of Wallrafplatz/
Domkloster/Minoritenstraße. The area
around the Cathedral is the perfect location
for those looking for gifts.
Ehrenstraße and Breite Straße
Cologne‘s Ehrenstraße is an absolute
„trend location“ and is well-known beyond
the borders of the city. Unusual and
innovative concepts have their place in
this street, which makes for a colorful
mix of clothes, shoes and accessories, of
tradition and modernity. On Breite Straße
there are a total of three shopping centres:
the Opern Passagen,
the DuMont Carré and
the WDR Arcades. An interesting
mix of fashion,
lifestyle and culinary delights
that complement
the shopping experience.
The Belgian quarter
Named after its street name, the „Belgian
Quarter“ is the location of creative
business ideas and young designers. The
Belgian Quarter has established itself as a
centre for young, edgy fashion in recent
years - a result of the „Chic Belgique“
initiative. Pretty little shops around the
Brüsseler Platz offer unique accessories,
gifts and fashion.
Mittelstraße and Pfeilstraße
With exclusive fashion, the Mittelstraße
and its bordering, smaller streets make
for a high-class boulevard. Well-known
brands and high-quality shops can be
found there.
The metropolis on the Rhine is a major hotspot
of the international fashion scene, with
concentrated fashion expertise in more
than 800 showrooms and endless options
for shopping. As an attractive shopping center
Dusseldorf is in a class of its own.
Dusseldorf Old Town
If you like eccentric and trendy shopping,
you will love a stroll through the Old
Town. The historic Carlstadt quarter exudes
unique and quaint charm, filled with
antique shops, galleries and art shops.
The „Kö“
Major international designers
such as Armani,
Bulgari, Gucci, Jil Sander,
Prada and Versace are
present on the luxurious
Königsallee, one of the top
shopping boulevards in
Europe. Here on the „Kö“ posh boutiques,
top fashion boutiques and shopping malls
alternate with elegant outdoor cafes.
Schadowstraße
Schadowstraße also offers attractive shopping
in the numerous shopping malls in the
city. Tiffany & Co., Marco Polo, Hugo Boss,
Strellson, Escada, Calvin Klein and Abercrombie
& Fitch are just a few of the tenants.
Those who are looking for something
less expensive will find it also in Dusseldorf:
The Dusseldorf arcades attract shoppers
from all over with more than 120 shops.
Rhineland
Tourism in the Rhineland region
Reliable, safe, flexible - unlimited mobility at any time.
Individualized arrival and departure options as well as unrestricted mobility on site are a luxury available
to every guest in the Rhineland metropolitan region. The three cities of Dusseldorf, Cologne and Bonn are
spaced a maximum of 60 km apart and are easily and quickly accessible via the outstanding highway infrastructure.
The two centrally located airports only serve to emphasize the internationalization of the region.
Cologne Bonn Airport -
from all over Europe to the Rhine
The Cologne Bonn Airport is one of the major airports in Germany
and has grown particularly rapidly in recent years. For
ten years, the airport has focused increasingly on the low-cost
travel business.
Nearly ten million passengers a year take off and land here. 30
airlines fly from Cologne Bonn Airport to around 30 countries
and 100 different destinations. Thanks to the airport, the Rhine
region is quickly and cheaply accessible to guests and patients
from all over Europe.
Almost no other airport is so well-connected to the metropolitan
Rhineland region. Just a few steps separate the terminal
from the airport railway station. Each day 170 commuter and
long-distance trains stop there. In this way, patients can quickly
and reliably reach the excellent clinics in the Rhineland.
The direct access to the highway likewise brings you to your
destination quickly. People with reduced mobility receive assistance
at the airport from the Red Cross. Experienced staff offer
help from arrival up to departure.
A medical centre, which is also staffed on weekends, a 24/7
Rewe supermarket and lovely shops and cafes: the services at
the Cologne Bonn Airport are tailored to your needs.
Dusseldorf International - gateway to
the world for North Rhine-Westphalia
Dusseldorf International is the largest airport in North Rhine-
Westphalia and the gateway to the world for the most populous
German state. The Airport is an international hub and an important
economic factor.
Situated in one of the strongest economic regions in Europe
with 18 million inhabitants in a radius of 100 kilometres, Dusseldorf
International is extremely important to the travel needs
of citizens and business in NRW. 20.3 million passengers use the
airport each year, and about 55,700 passengers start or end up
here per day.
Passengers can choose from over 190 airlines and tourist destinations
in the intercontinental and European routes and within
Germany and around 70 airlines - for business, vacation, a short
trip or a city tour.
The airport set international standards with its terminal, completed
in 2003. The architecture of the building captivates with
its transparency and lightness. The optimal operating procedures,
the services and the safety concept set a precedent. In the
central building, which connects Gates A, B and C, the passenger
can check his or her baggage quickly and easily at one of the
some 142 check-in counters.
Entry formalities for medical treatment in Germany
EU nationals
EU nationals do not require a visa to enter the Federal Republic
of Germany.
Non-EU nationals
Generally speaking, non-EU nationals require a visa for stays
in Germany. A visa is not required for semi-annual visits of up
to 90 days for nationals of those countries for which the European
Community has abolished the visa requirement. For the
issuing of a visitor or tourist visa for short stays not exceeding
3 months in a member state of the Schengen area with medical
treatment as the purpose of the trip, an application must
be submitted by the patient to the respective mission of the
destination country. Accompanying persons must themselves
submit an application for a Schengen visa.
Responsibility for the granting of visas
Pursuant to section 71 (2) of the Residence Act, responsibility
for issuing visas lies with the missions of the Federal Republic
of Germany i.e. its embassies and consulates-general.
Local responsibility for issuing the visa lies with the mission responsible
for the area in which the applicant has his/her ordinary
place of residence or domicile.
Visa for medical treatment in Germany
A visa application must be submitted by the applicant in person
to the mission responsible for his/her place of residence. Acutely
ill patients may have their applications submitted to the
visa section of the German Embassy by an authorised person.
For submission by a third party, an authorisation signed by the
patient in front of a notary and a corresponding current medical
certificate must be presented to the embassy. As a rule,
missions require between two and ten working days to process
a Schengen visa application. Applications for a longer period of
medical treatment may take several months to process.
The following documents are required for the application:
••
Identification card and copies of the pages with personal data
••
Completed application, signed in person, for the issuance
of a Schengen visa with attached current, colour biometric
passport photo (size 3.5 x 4.5 cm)
••
plus a second biometric passport photo
••
A declaration signed in person pursuant to section 55 of the
Residence Act
••
Travel health insurance with proof of payment and a copy
(valid for all member states of Schengen for the entire stay
applied for with minimum cover of EUR 30,000)
••
Original birth certificate and a copy
(for minors of up to 18 years: birth certificate and declaration
of consent by both parents)
Additional information for foreign patients
1. Confirmation by the clinic / attending physician
The letter of confirmation from the clinic / attending physician
regarding the necessity of the forthcoming medical stay has to include
detailed information about the start of treatment, the probable
duration of treatment and the likely costs (with a comprehensive
breakdown of the individual costs). The letter must not be
over 3 months old. It must be in writing. A declaration by a doctor
or a medical institution may be required to the effect that the necessary
medical treatment is not possible in the home country.
If an agency is commissioned with the organisation of the treatment,
it should be noted that any information regarding the costs,
scope and duration of the treatment must be confirmed solely by
the clinic itself or attending physician himself/herself.
2. Financing confirmation of the clinic or declaration on the
assumption of costs
The patient must submit a declaration that the financing of the
treatment and the stay is secured (e.g. bank statements for at
least 3 months / bank certificates regarding the current balance
of the account / proof of the transfer of the probable costs or,
by way of confirmation by the clinic, that the payment is secured).
In the case of a declaration on the assumption of costs
by another party, a formal declaration of liability pursuant to
sections 66 to 68 of the Residence Act is required. This must
not be more than 6 months old and must refer to the medical
treatment (the original and a copy must be presented).
3. Reservation confirmation for accommodation
The place of stay of the patient (for outpatient treatment) must
be demonstrated by him or her by way of evidence (e.g. confirmation
of hotel reservation). If the patient is to be accommodated
with a private person, a formal declaration of liability pursuant to
sections 66 and 68 of the Residence Act must be presented.
4. Proofs of willingness to return
It may be the case that proofs of the social and economic situation
of the patient (e.g. by means of letters from employers, salary
statements, company licences, account statements for the last
three months, proofs of ownership etc.) have to be presented.
Additional information for accompanying persons:
The accompanying person(s) of the patient is/are obliged to
present certain evidence when a visa application is made. These
include in particular:
- Proof of financing
- Proof of accommodation
- Proof of willingness to return
More Information on medical visa issues can be obtained in your
country of origin at the German Embassy or German Consulate.
A look at the issue „Orthopaedics and Cardiology“
This edition of our Health Destination Rhineland catalogue presents an overview of the medical and tourist
expertise of the Rhine Region.
The next edition is dedicated to the medical disciplines ORTHOPAEDICS and CARDIOLOGY.
Orthopaedics
Leading medicine in Düsseldorf‘s „Kö“ for patients from all over the world.
The Königsallee associated practice, with its radiological centre, represents
the highest quality of medical standards and personalized service.
Königsallee - known simply as „Kö“ - is
considered Düsseldorf‘s best-known and
most exclusive shopping street. However,
not only world-renowned designers
and prestigious hotels choose this central
location loved by inhabitants and
guests. The internationally acclaimed
Königsallee associated practice and its
highly professional team of doctors of
orthopaedic surgeons, neurosurgeons
and radiologists take care of patients
here, as well. A treatment at the Königsallee
Cardiology
Smooth joints, tactful heart at Bonn Community Hospital
An aging population combined with poor lifestyle choices such as a lack of
exercise lead to increased cardiac or orthopaedic problems.
One of the first and largest clinics in Germany,
the Centre for Orthopaedics, Trauma
Surgery and Sports Medicine (ZOUS)
is certified as a full-service endoprosthesis
centre. Treatment is based on the
most up-to-date knowledge in medical
science. In addition, the centre places
particular emphasis on the application
of demonstrated surgical procedures
and implants with exceptional long-term
results. Experienced surgeons implant
about 1,700 prostheses each year and
help over 3,000 individuals with arthroscopy-related
pain in all major joints
annually. Heart and circulatory problems
are continually increasing. As a result, it is
important to patients that a cardiac centre
is also available in-house. The focus
of the cardiology centre is the treatment
of coronary artery disease in the acute
phase of myocardial infarction and in the
chronic phase using all available stent
techniques, the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias
- including the implantation
of differentiated pacemakers - and the
non-surgical treatment of valvular heart
disease (transcatheter aortic valve replacement,
TAVR).
