capital, the Cologne-Bonn healthcare 

region is becoming a trendsetter 

in medical tourism, thanks 

to exceptional medical services 

combined with innovative tourism 

marketing concepts. 

Nearly a fifth of all international 

patients opt for a clinic in North 

Rhine-Westphalia. Particularly popular 

among these treatment vacations 

are those to the cities of 

Bonn, Cologne and Dusseldorf. 

The metropolitan region of Rhineland, 

with an area of approximately 

4,600 square kilometres and a 

population of about 4.1 million, 

has approximately 25,000 beds in 

nearly 90 hospitals and rehabilitation 

clinics. Thousands of physicians 

provide patients from home 

and abroad with quantitatively and 

qualitatively superior care, from 

diagnosis to treatment to rehabilitation. 

Despite the ever-increasing 

demand, the region has received 

little attention as of yet in competition 

with other medical tourism 

destinations at home and abroad. 

The Ministry of Economy, Industry, 

Trade and Craftsmanship of North 

Rhine Westphalia and EU-funded 

project „Medical Tourism along 

the Rhine: Bonn - Cologne - Dusseldorf“ 

sets itself the task of setting 

the metropolitan region of Rhineland 

in an effective and sustainable 

standing in national and international 

medical tourism. Through 

innovative and targeted products, 

defined quality management and 

a variety of communication and 

marketing activities at home 

and abroad, collaborative partnershipas 

between industry and 

medical tourism service providers 

are increasing. 

The joint presentation of individual 

service components makes 

it easier for potential guests to 

find this information and provides 

them with direct contact details.

Health Destination Rhineland 

The health metropolis in the heart of Europe 

The metropolitan region of Rhineland from Dusseldorf to Cologne and Bonn is one of the leading medical 

destinations in Germany. It is a location for high-tech, top-notch medicine and telemedicine, as well as pharmaceuticals 

and medical technology. Many medical services already have national and international appeal 

and attract patients and companies to the region along the Rhine. 

With the cities of Cologne, Bonn and Leverkusen 

and the Rhein-Sieg District, the 

Rhine-Erft District, the Oberbergisch District 

and the Rheinisch-Bergisch District, 

the health region in Rhineland comprises 

an area of approximately 4,400 square 

kilometres with a total of approximately 

3.5 million residents. The state capital 

of Dusseldorf has an area of approximately 

217 square kilometres with about 

600,000 inhabitants. The metropolitan 

region of Rhineland, from Dusseldorf, to 

Cologne to Bonn, makes up 14 per cent 

of the total area and 23 per cent of the 

population of NRW. 

The healthcare industry is one of the 

largest sectors of the economy in both 

North Rhine-Westphalia and the Rhineland. 

In addition to the high levels of employment, 

the healthcare industry in the 

Rhineland demonstrates great potential 

for innovation. 

Many sectors of the regional health economy 

have already completed the internationalization 

process successfully. 

In addition to the pharmaceutical and 

biotechnology industries, the medical 

technology sector is on the way to conquer 

global markets. Health-care facilities, 

such as hospitals and rehabilitation 

clinics, are also turning their focus internationally 

and are broadening their range 

of skills, in addition to the sources of extra-budgetary 

treatment revenues. This 

additional business is becoming increasingly 

important, particularly in times of 

globalization and the opening of national 

borders. 

As a result, clinics in the metropolitan 

Rhineland region have actively sought 

international patients. According to the 

Federal Statistical Office, some 70.000 

foreign patients annually seek inpatient 

treatment in German hospitals. Additionally, 

there is a far greater number of outpatients. 

Almost a fifth of these international 

guests opt for a clinic in NRW. 

Apart from Aachen, the cities of Dusseldorf, 

Bonn and Cologne in particular are 

the primary destinations for medical travel. 

With more than 25,000 beds in 90 

hospitals, the health region of Cologne- 

Bonn, in cooperation with partners from 

Dusseldorf, has a significantly higher 

treatment capacity than Berlin or Munich. 

Particularly popular at the moment in the 

„Health Destination Rhineland“ are disciplines 

such as ophthalmology, orthopaedics, 

trauma surgery and sports orthopaedics, 

cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, 

oncology, neurology and neurosurgery, 

as well as the comprehensive services of 

the rehabilitation facilities. Diseases such 

as diabetes and obesity are common comorbidities 

of inbound patients and are 

treated directly. 

In addition, numerous tourist and service 

providers complement the spectrum 

of medical services. The cities of Bonn, 

Cologne and Dusseldorf offer first-class 

hotels, dining, arts and cultural centres, 

leisure attractions and extensive gardens 

and parks. The spectrum ranges from the 

picturesque Siebengebirge hills with the 

legendary Drachenfels to the world-famous

studied medicine and then 

dentistry in Germany. He 

obtained licensing approvals

It is difficult for a patient to judge whether 

or not a therapy for a severe illness 

is up-to-date medically and if it is the best 

option for treatment. Medical services 

around the world vary in quality. For this 

reason, more and more people travel abroad 

to receive medical treatment. 

However, it is not always necessary to go 

to Germany. Treatment may not be necessary 

at all if the diagnosis in the native 

country was incorrect. Moreover, not 

everyone can afford treatment in Germany. 

There are also situations in which the 

patient is in critical condition and travel 

can be life-threatening. This is when it is 

extremely important to seek the opinion 

of qualified foreign doctors in order to 

make the right decision. 

For such cases, a special product was 

designed for foreign patients: „Second 

Opinion“. The „Second Opinion“ is an expert 

review of the medical documents by 

German specialists. The patient is better 

informed and can make the right decision

the right decision, get a qualified recommendation 

in time and correct the treatment

and specialist training in gynaecology 

and obstetrics at the University Women‘s 

Clinic at the Heinrich-Heine University in 

Dusseldorf, Prof. Krüssel is now the Coordinator 

of UniKiD as well as a Professor in 

the Faculty of Medicine at the Heinrich- 

Heine University. 

„UniKiD“: The Fertility Centre 

at the University Hospital Dusseldorf 

Interdisciplinary treatment at the highest scientific level of a university 

hospital and the personal service of an ultra-modern private practice. 

For many couples, infertility is a strong 

psychological and physical stress and the 

search for the causes and treatment options 

are often expensive and tedious. 

To better aide infertile couples, the University 

Hospital of Dusseldorf set up the University 

Interdisciplinary Fertility Centre 

Dusseldorf (UniKiD) under the auspices of 

the Women‘s Clinic. Today, with more than 

800 oocyte retrievals per year, it is one of 

the leading fertility centres in Germany. 

There has been a fertility clinic in the 

Women‘s Clinic of the University Hospital 

Dusseldorf (UKD) for 20 years. To date, several 

thousand treatments have been carried 

out there. 

The treatment process 

First, the treatment team at the UniKiD 

attempts to find a clear diagnosis of the 

cause of infertility. Since the cause of infertility 

can be varied, these tests, which 

are always performed for both partners, 

can take a little time. After a clear explanation 

is found, a treatment plan tailored 

to your diagnosis is developed. Your physician 

then discusses the plan, the duration 

of the treatment and the individual 

therapy steps with you in detail. 

Interdisciplinary collaboration 

In the UniKiD, specialists from the areas 

of gynaecological endocrinology and reproductive 

medicine, andrology, urology, 

psychosomatic medicine and human 

genetics look after the patients. Thanks 

to the integration of UniKiD in the University 

Hospital Dusseldorf, our patients 

always receive optimal medical care. 

Consiliary exams in the fields of internal 

medicine, neurology, coagulation system 

and transfusion medicine, anaesthesia, 

and other disciplines are available 

at any time. 

International cooperation and scientific 

activities 

The focus of the scientific work in Uni- 

KiD is the study of the causes of infertility 

and the advancement of fertility 

techniques. The high scientific level of 

the working group is evidenced by more 

than 100 national and international publications, 

book and poster contributions, 

along with lectures, on-going grants 

from the German Research Association 

(DFG) and national and international 

collaborations. In addition, our patients 

benefit from international collaboration 

with renowned universities in the U.S.,

Bonn surprises with its ever-changing faces: Two thousand years of history, Beethoven‘s birthplace, the city

Entry formalities for medical treatment in Germany 

EU nationals 

EU nationals do not require a visa to enter the Federal Republic 

of Germany. 

Non-EU nationals 

Generally speaking, non-EU nationals require a visa for stays 

in Germany. A visa is not required for semi-annual visits of up 

to 90 days for nationals of those countries for which the European 

Community has abolished the visa requirement. For the 

issuing of a visitor or tourist visa for short stays not exceeding 

3 months in a member state of the Schengen area with medical 

treatment as the purpose of the trip, an application must 

be submitted by the patient to the respective mission of the 

destination country. Accompanying persons must themselves 

submit an application for a Schengen visa. 

Responsibility for the granting of visas 

Pursuant to section 71 (2) of the Residence Act, responsibility 

for issuing visas lies with the missions of the Federal Republic 

of Germany i.e. its embassies and consulates-general. 

Local responsibility for issuing the visa lies with the mission responsible 

for the area in which the applicant has his/her ordinary 

place of residence or domicile. 

Visa for medical treatment in Germany 

A visa application must be submitted by the applicant in person 

to the mission responsible for his/her place of residence. Acutely 

ill patients may have their applications submitted to the 

visa section of the German Embassy by an authorised person. 

For submission by a third party, an authorisation signed by the 

patient in front of a notary and a corresponding current medical 

certificate must be presented to the embassy. As a rule, 

missions require between two and ten working days to process 

a Schengen visa application. Applications for a longer period of 

medical treatment may take several months to process. 

The following documents are required for the application: 

•• 

Identification card and copies of the pages with personal data 

•• 

Completed application, signed in person, for the issuance 

of a Schengen visa with attached current, colour biometric 

passport photo (size 3.5 x 4.5 cm) 

•• 

plus a second biometric passport photo 

•• 

A declaration signed in person pursuant to section 55 of the 

Residence Act 

•• 

Travel health insurance with proof of payment and a copy 

(valid for all member states of Schengen for the entire stay 

applied for with minimum cover of EUR 30,000) 

•• 

Original birth certificate and a copy 

(for minors of up to 18 years: birth certificate and declaration 

of consent by both parents) 

Additional information for foreign patients 

1. Confirmation by the clinic / attending physician 

The letter of confirmation from the clinic / attending physician 

regarding the necessity of the forthcoming medical stay has to include 

detailed information about the start of treatment, the probable 

duration of treatment and the likely costs (with a comprehensive 

breakdown of the individual costs). The letter must not be 

over 3 months old. It must be in writing. A declaration by a doctor 

or a medical institution may be required to the effect that the necessary 

medical treatment is not possible in the home country. 

If an agency is commissioned with the organisation of the treatment, 

it should be noted that any information regarding the costs, 

scope and duration of the treatment must be confirmed solely by 

the clinic itself or attending physician himself/herself. 

2. Financing confirmation of the clinic or declaration on the 

assumption of costs 

The patient must submit a declaration that the financing of the 

treatment and the stay is secured (e.g. bank statements for at 

least 3 months / bank certificates regarding the current balance 

of the account / proof of the transfer of the probable costs or, 

by way of confirmation by the clinic, that the payment is secured). 

In the case of a declaration on the assumption of costs 

by another party, a formal declaration of liability pursuant to 

sections 66 to 68 of the Residence Act is required. This must 

not be more than 6 months old and must refer to the medical 

treatment (the original and a copy must be presented). 

3. Reservation confirmation for accommodation 

The place of stay of the patient (for outpatient treatment) must 

be demonstrated by him or her by way of evidence (e.g. confirmation 

of hotel reservation). If the patient is to be accommodated 

with a private person, a formal declaration of liability pursuant to 

sections 66 and 68 of the Residence Act must be presented. 

4. Proofs of willingness to return 

It may be the case that proofs of the social and economic situation 

of the patient (e.g. by means of letters from employers, salary 

statements, company licences, account statements for the last 

three months, proofs of ownership etc.) have to be presented. 

Additional information for accompanying persons: 

The accompanying person(s) of the patient is/are obliged to 

present certain evidence when a visa application is made. These 

include in particular: 

- Proof of financing 

- Proof of accommodation 

- Proof of willingness to return

An aging population combined with poor lifestyle choices such as a lack of 

exercise lead to increased cardiac or orthopaedic problems. 

One of the first and largest clinics in Germany, 

the Centre for Orthopaedics, Trauma 

Surgery and Sports Medicine (ZOUS) 

is certified as a full-service endoprosthesis 

centre. Treatment is based on the 

most up-to-date knowledge in medical 

science. In addition, the centre places 

particular emphasis on the application 

of demonstrated surgical procedures 

and implants with exceptional long-term 

results. Experienced surgeons implant 

about 1,700 prostheses each year and
