Section 2: The Demography <strong>of</strong> <strong>Age<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />
population than has been <strong>the</strong> case for Western<br />
societies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> past. At <strong>the</strong> same time, however, this<br />
adaptation will be occurr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a very different social,<br />
economic <strong>and</strong> technological environment.<br />
2.2 Determ<strong>in</strong>ants <strong>of</strong> population age<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Changes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> age structure <strong>of</strong> a population,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g population age<strong>in</strong>g, is determ<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> past<br />
trends <strong>in</strong> fertility, mortality <strong>and</strong> migration. For<br />
Thail<strong>and</strong> at <strong>the</strong> national level, migration has been a<br />
relatively m<strong>in</strong>or <strong>in</strong>fluence at least for <strong>the</strong> legally<br />
resident population. Decl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g fertility, as measured<br />
by <strong>the</strong> total fertility rate (see Figure 1.1 <strong>and</strong> Table 2.1)<br />
has been sharply reduc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> share <strong>of</strong> children with<strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> total population <strong>and</strong> is <strong>the</strong> driv<strong>in</strong>g demographic<br />
determ<strong>in</strong>ant <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> recent population age<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />
Thail<strong>and</strong>. Improv<strong>in</strong>g survival rates, as <strong>in</strong>dicated <strong>in</strong><br />
Table 2.1 by <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g life expectancy at birth, have<br />
also characterized <strong>the</strong> last half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> twentieth<br />
century <strong>and</strong> are anticipated to cont<strong>in</strong>ue dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
com<strong>in</strong>g decades. The <strong>in</strong>creased mortality associated<br />
with <strong>the</strong> AIDS epidemic disproportionately affected<br />
men <strong>in</strong> Thail<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> accounts for <strong>the</strong> reduction <strong>in</strong><br />
male life expectancy at <strong>the</strong> turn <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 21st century.<br />
The anticipated resumption <strong>of</strong> improvement <strong>in</strong> life<br />
expectancy for men reflects Thail<strong>and</strong>’s success <strong>in</strong><br />
combat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> AIDS epidemic <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />
widespread antiretroviral <strong>the</strong>rapy to persons who need<br />
it (Revenga et al. 2006; UNDP 2004).<br />
