STORY LINES<br />

• The Wolves open up a busy month of January 20<strong>12</strong> with a trip to Mars Hill to<br />

visit the Lions and the SAC’s top scorer, Sammy Emile.<br />

• Newberry still has the SAC’s top scoring offense, ranked 7th in the nation, averaging<br />

89.8 points per <strong>game</strong>. The Wolves are facing off against the most porous<br />

scoring defense in the league, as Mars Hill has given up 98.8 points per <strong>game</strong>, and<br />

has lost by an average of 18.5 points per <strong>game</strong>, both ranking last in the league.<br />

• Newberry ranks No. 1 in the league in free throw shooting percentage and is<br />

second in the league in rebounding margin. The battle inside will be important,<br />

as MHC leads the SAC in offensive rebounding.<br />

• The Wolves have four of the league’s top 30 scorers in Savad Garner (8th,<br />

15.8ppg), Dondray Walker (9th, 15.2ppg), Quayshun Hawkins (22nd, 11.3ppg) and<br />

Chris Reynolds (27th, 10.1ppg).<br />

•MHC”s Emile leads the league with 24.7ppg, while Terrell Harris ranks 6th in the<br />

SAC with 18.0ppg.<br />

• Reynolds is second in the league with 8.1 rebounds per <strong>game</strong>, and ranks third<br />

in the league in field goal percentage (.690), with Garner fourth in that category<br />

at .674.<br />

• Quayshun Hawkins leads the league in assists at 5.11 per contest.<br />

HEAD COACH DAVE DAVIS<br />

Dave Davis was introduced as the College’s 24th men’s <strong>basketball</strong><br />

coach in a press conference on campus Monday, April 26, 2010.<br />

Davis had previously served as head men’s <strong>basketball</strong> coach at Pfeiffer<br />

University for the past 14 seasons.<br />

In his 14 seasons at Pfeiffer, Davis accumulated a record of 284-<br />

<strong>12</strong>4 (.696) including 21 championships, NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen<br />

appearances in 2000 and 2004 and an NCAA Elite Eight appearance<br />

in 2004.<br />

Davis’ Pfeiffer teams have averaged over 20 wins per season and<br />

rank in the top 5 in wins since 1990 in all of NCAA Division II <strong>basketball</strong>.<br />

Davis was named the CVAC Coach of the Year in 1998, 1999 and<br />

2004. He was also named the NCAA East Regional Coach of the Year<br />

in 2004.<br />

Davis’ 2009-10 Pfeiffer team finished as the highest scoring team<br />

in Division II at 103.1 points per <strong>game</strong> and was ranked third nationally<br />

in three-pointers per <strong>game</strong> (10.6) and steals per <strong>game</strong> (11.2), while<br />

ranking fifth in the country in three-point field goal percentage (42.3%).<br />

Prior to being named head coach at Pfeiffer, Davis was the head coach at Barton College<br />

where the team of his own recruits won a record 25 <strong>game</strong>s. He received his first head coaching<br />

position at his alma mater, Warren Wilson College, where he led the Owls to their highest win<br />

total in 15 years.<br />

All told, Davis has a record of 343-200 (.632) in 19 years as a collegiate head coach.<br />

Davis earned his bachelor’s degree from Warren Wilson in 1983, and a master’s degree from<br />

Gardner-Webb in 1993. As a player for the Owls, he was a 4-year starter and was on two Conference<br />

Championship teams. He is Warren Wilson’s all-time assist leader.<br />

Davis has an impressive list of former assistant coaches including seven Division I coaches,<br />

headlined by Purdue head coach Matt Painter, Charlotte associate head coach Rob Moxley, Charlotte<br />

assistant coach Rob Perron and Boston Celtics assistant coach Michael Longabardi.<br />

Newberry head coach Dave Davis had a reputation for winning<br />

at Pfeiffer which he is working on continuing at Newberry. After<br />

13 wins last season, Davis now has 356 wins entering his 21st<br />

season.<br />

Davis ranks as the 36th winningest active coach in Division<br />

II. With a 20-win season this year, Davis could pass the 375 win<br />

DONATING AT THE CHARITY STRIPE<br />

In 2010-11, the Wolves obliterated the South Atlantic Conference<br />

record for the most free throws attempted in a season, with<br />

900 attempts at the free throw stripe in 27 <strong>game</strong>s.<br />

The previous record was 863 attempts in 34 <strong>game</strong>s by the<br />

2006-07 Wingate squad.<br />

Newberry also set the SAC record for made free throws, with<br />

599 made free throws, breaking the 2006-07 Wingate team’s record<br />

of 568.<br />

Newberry’s opponents also set the SAC record for free throws<br />

made (649, old record was 524), and attempts (880, old record<br />

790). The opponents’ free throw percentage was also a SAC record<br />

(.738, old record .731).<br />

TICKLING THE TWINE<br />

After being held to 70 points at Tusculum, Newberry’s scoring<br />

average dipped below 90 ppg, and the Wolves now rank 7th nationally<br />

in scoring, and third in the Southeast Region behind for<br />

mer Newberry coach Jeremy Luther’s team at Armstrong, and<br />

Belmont Abbey.<br />
