Carolyn Lamour:
Dancing to Success

Carolyn Lamour is happiest when she
is dancing. The Haitian teenager, who
lives in Lake Worth, is so impressive that
she has been selected on the national
level to represent Team USA at World
Dance Showcase in Riesa, Germany in
November.
Carolyn’s accomplishments at the
tender age of 17 are testimony to her
talent and to her teachers at That’s
Dancing, a dance studio in Lake Worth.
For eight years, Carolyn has been taking
group and private lessons in jazz, ballet,
tap, modern and lyrical dancing. She
studies five days a week.
“Dancing is fun. It gives me a good
feeling,” she says. “I can make the steps
harder or leap higher to create more of a
challenge. I can express myself through
movement.”
Carolyn laughingly admits that she
sometimes is clumsy. Yet, Andrea

LaMaina, artistic director of That’s
Dancing, says that Carolyn is so graceful,
she seems to be floating on a cloud.
Conveying that impression is an
achievement for Carolyn, considering that
she is only 5 feet 1 1/4 inches tall and
that she has scoliosis. When she is not
dancing, she wears a spine-corrective
device and she takes physical therapy.
Carolyn, who is home schooled
through Keystone National High School,
hopes to be accepted at Florida State
University, where she plans a double
major – English Literature and Dance.
When she was in the eighth grade,
Carolyn won her first regional dance title,
Miss Global Dance International, during a
competition at Broward Community
College. Performing a modern dance in
Headliners Dance Competition in
Lancaster, Pa., she won the national title
of Miss Headliner 2006-2007. Her
awards include a tiara, trophy and cash.
The petite, well-spoken teenager is
ecstatic about competing on the
international level in Germany. “For me,
it’s the Olympics of dance,” she says.
Performing a modern dance to Blackbird
by Muriel Zoe, she will compete against
dancers from 33 countries.
Competition makes Carolyn nervous,
but she has a trick: She dances for her
own enjoyment and keeps the judges in
the back of her mind. Andrea LaMaina,
who has a degree in dance education, is
betting on Carolyn.
“Carolyn is very well prepared, very
consistent, and has beautiful techniques,”
she says. “She is only 5 feet 1 1/4
inches, but she is a giant on the stage.
She is awesome.”
Clearly, Carolyn Lamour is a winner!
