CityWise Ballet Florida Announces its 2006-2007 Season Featuring Two World Premieres Ballet Florida, founded in 1986 by artistic director Marie Hale, is ranked among the top 20 dance companies in the country, and is a cornerstone of Palm Beach County’s cultural landscape. Ballet Florida consistently earns international and national recognition for its outstanding achievements in classical and contemporary dance, and is considered to be one of the few dance companies in the country to perform richly diverse and eclectic repertories, which include works from world famous choreographers Jerome Robbins, Twyla Tharp, George Balanchine, William Forsythe, Alvin Ailey, Peter Martins, and many more. In 2001, the company made its critically acclaimed debut at the renowned Joyce Theatre in New York City. It is also the only American company to have ever been invited twice to perform at the renowned International Dance Festival in Biarritz, France. In addition to its professional dance company, Ballet Florida is home to one of the area’s most prestigious dance schools, The Academy of Ballet Florida. Ballet Florida has announced their 2006-2007 season, which features two exciting world premieres, one by renowned choreographer Trey McIntyre and one by Ballet Florida’s home-grown choreographic talent Jerry Opdenaker. The season’s diverse repertoire also features a company premiere by legendary choreographer Lar Lubovitch. The 2006-2007 season will also include four new talented professional dancers: Alfredo Lescaille, a native of West Palm Beach, comes to Ballet Florida from Orlando Ballet where he performed soloist and principal roles for the past two years. Before joining Orlando Ballet, Alfredo performed with Colorado Ballet. He received his professional training at Hartford Ballet, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School and the Palm Beach Ballet Center under the tutelage of Joan Miller. Alfredo was a member of the first graduating class
of the Alexander W. Dreyfoos, Jr. School of the Arts in West Palm Beach. Shannon Smith of Hollywood has performed as a principal dancer for three years with Cincinnati Ballet. Previously, he danced with Sarasota Ballet and Dayton Ballet. His professional training includes The Harid Conservatory, Miami City Ballet, School of American Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Pittsburgh Ballet and Hartford Ballet. Douglas Gawriljuk of Brazil joins Ballet Florida from Maximum Dance Company where he worked as ballet master for the past five years. He also danced professionally with the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, Miami City Ballet, The Basel Ballet in Switzerland and Ballet Du Nord in France. He received his professional training from the School of American Ballet, the Royal Academy of Dancing in London, and also from his father, Ruslan Gawriljuk. Marife Gimenez of Venezuela performed as a principal dancer with Maximum Dance Company prior to joining Ballet Florida. She also danced professionally with Miami City Ballet and The National Ballet of Caracas under the artistic direction of legendary choreographer Vicente Nebrada. She studied ballet at the Fanny Montiel School of Ballet in Caracas. These new additions bring the dance company’s members to 24, representing nine different countries. Retiring from Ballet Florida this season is 20-year veteran Manuel Ureta and Jerry Opdenaker, who after 14 seasons with the company, is leaving to pursue a career in choreography.
