PURPOSE
This conference is designed to provide information
and discussion of current trends in the care of
patients with dual medical and psychiatric
diagnosis.
OBJECTIVES
1. Identify and discuss newer drugs of abuse and
their effects.
2. Define mindfulness and describe a brief experiental
practice of mindfulness. Examine the
evidence based benefits of mindfulness for selfcare
and patient care.
3. Describe the effects of psychotropic medication
overdoses and the appropriate monitoring and
action plans for patients hospitalized post
overdose.
4. Review the criteria for mild cognitive impairment
and the new diagnostic features of the
mild neurocognitive disorders presented in
DSM‐5. Discuss how depression, treatment
factors and lifestyle factors influence early
memory changes in later life.
5. Discuss the forensic and mental health
implications of sexual assault.
6. Identify recent changes in the DSM 5 criteria for
diagnosing an intellectual disability. Discuss the
co‐occurrence of intellectual disability and
challenging behaviors. Review common treatments
used to prevent and decrease challenging
behaviors.
