PURPOSE<br />
This conference is designed to provide information<br />
<strong>and</strong> discussion <strong>of</strong> current trends in the care <strong>of</strong><br />
patients with dual medical <strong>and</strong> psychiatric<br />
diagnosis.<br />
OBJECTIVES<br />
1. Identify <strong>and</strong> discuss newer drugs <strong>of</strong> abuse <strong>and</strong><br />
their effects.<br />
2. Define mindfulness <strong>and</strong> describe a brief experiental<br />
practice <strong>of</strong> mindfulness. Examine the<br />
evidence based benefits <strong>of</strong> mindfulness for selfcare<br />
<strong>and</strong> patient care.<br />
3. Describe the effects <strong>of</strong> psychotropic medication<br />
overdoses <strong>and</strong> the appropriate monitoring <strong>and</strong><br />
action plans for patients hospitalized post<br />
overdose.<br />
4. Review the criteria for mild cognitive impairment<br />
<strong>and</strong> the new diagnostic features <strong>of</strong> the<br />
mild neurocognitive disorders presented in<br />
DSM‐5. Discuss how depression, treatment<br />
factors <strong>and</strong> lifestyle factors influence early<br />
memory changes in later life.<br />
5. Discuss the forensic <strong>and</strong> mental health<br />
implications <strong>of</strong> sexual assault.<br />
6. Identify recent changes in the DSM 5 criteria for<br />
diagnosing an intellectual disability. Discuss the<br />
co‐occurrence <strong>of</strong> intellectual disability <strong>and</strong><br />
challenging behaviors. Review common treatments<br />
used to prevent <strong>and</strong> decrease challenging<br />
behaviors.<br />
