A Level Academy
The A Level Academy is an exciting new development at Yeovil College’s Mudford Road
campus. Designed with the specific needs of A Level students in mind, the £1.1 million
Academy aims to foster a culture of academic ambition and achievement and offers a
modern and inspirational environment like no other available locally.
Facilities
The Academy has been designed specifically with A Level
students in mind. It incorporates spaces which reflect
and serve their particular needs. As well as incorporating
our existing open plan science laboratories, the Academy
offers a suite of high quality teaching environments
equipped with up-to-date audio-visual and interactive
technology. The Academy also has social areas where
students can relax and meet friends between classes.
The A Level Academy Resources Centre (ARC)
The A Level Academy also includes its very own resources
centre. It has been specifically designed to help prepare
students for higher level study and a future in the
workplace. The Centre offers a wide range of A Level
specific online resources and ebooks as well as more
traditional resources such as textbooks and DVDs.
This is complemented by a comprehensive research
skills package developed and tailored especially for Yeovil
College A Level students. The Learning Centre staff have
strong links with lecturers so that they can ensure all the
resources needed for A Level courses are up-to-date and
relevant. The Centre includes formal and informal areas for
supported or independent study, as well as group working
zones. All A Level Academy students have study sessions
in the ARC included in their timetable. The design and
technical infrastructure of the ARC actively encourages
students to use their own laptops, smart phones and tablet
PCs for study, making the A Level Academy an innovative,
and modern study environment.
STAFF
Our A Level students are supported by a team of
highly qualified academic staff who have an excellent
understanding of how to help them fulfil their potential
and get the most from their time at Yeovil College.
In addition, the Learning Centre is staffed every day during
term time in order to give students individual support for
research, writing assignments and referencing skills.
Studying at the A Level Academy
Above all, the new A Level Academy has been created
with students in mind. It is a modern, welcoming,
stimulating, inspiring and supportive place to study and
will help our students take the right steps towards
university or their chosen career.
Foundation Learning
Work Preparation, Work Progression and
Independent Living Skills Programme
Foundation Learning offers a variety of courses that are individually tailored for young people
with additional needs. The College has an excellent track record of successfully supporting
these students and many progress on to other programmes of education and/or employment.
Students learn in small, friendly groups with high levels of support.
The Work Preparation Programme
A two year course designed for learners with moderate
learning difficulties. It focuses on the skills necessary
to prepare them for other courses, independent living
and/or employment.
The Independent Living Skills
A two year course. It helps learners to develop and
consolidate their independent living skills alongside work
skills, if appropriate. This course is often a progression
route from the Work Preparation Programme and allows
students who need a little longer to consolidate skills
to learn at their own pace.
Work Progression
A one year course. Learners join this course if they
need a year to improve their skills before further
studies and/or employment. For other learners, this is a
progression route from the Work Preparation Programme
which helps them consolidate and develop skills learnt
during the first two years.
Project search
Project Search is a one year, full-time course which
offers students with learning difficulties the opportunity
to work as interns with Yeovil District Hospital. Based at
the Hospital, students learn real skills in three different
departments over the course. Students are supported by
a tutor and a job coach, who also supports them as they
look for paid employment at the end of the course.
Individual Study Programme
Students with learning difficulties who join a Foundation
Learning programme at Yeovil College may also have
the opportunity to study part of their course with other
departments. We aim to fit the curriculum around you
so you can study all parts of your programme at an
individually appropriate level. For more information,
please call our Student and Customer Services Team
on 01935 423921.
Curriculum Design
We offer a project-based curriculum where full-time
students learn vocational and life skills in a realistic
environment. This can enable the transition from
education to work and could offer routes for some
students into mainstream education. We have a strong
commitment to the improvement of Functional Skills
(Maths and English) and the achievement of personal
goals. The curriculum is based on the needs of our
students and can change from year to year, however
projects we have offered in the past include:
Independent Living Skills
All full-time students access an Independent Living
Skills programme which includes Shopping & Cooking
for Independence, Social Skills, Relationships, Home
Management, Mobility/Accessing the Community,
Money Matters and Leisure & Personal Skills.
Community Awareness
This is about exploring the community around us and
enables students to familiarise themselves with the
College, Yeovil and the many facilities available, which
students can then explore in their own leisure time.
Work Ready
This short programme aims to get Work Preparation
learners ready to explore work placements. Learners
create individual CVs and investigate potential work
placement opportunities.
Functional Skills Workshops
All learners are given the opportunity to develop and
improve their Maths, English and ICT skills within small
group workshops.
Create!
Learners are given the opportunity to express themselves
through art and craft, encouraging them to be more
confident in decision making skills and their ability to
create something they are happy to show others.
Retail & Enterprise
This project is based around the skills needed to work in a
retail environment. It covers areas including investigating
the Retail industry, Health & Safety, Customer Service
and Selling & Stock Management. Learners have the
opportunity to run a small business and several stalls
throughout the year.
Hospitality & Catering
Learners gain the skills required for working in a Catering
environment, including Food Preparation, Table Setting,
Customer Service, Health & Hygiene and Food Service.
Students are also involved in running a small café.
Get Active!
This project is delivered through a wide range of practical
sporting and leisure activities. These experiences develop
an understanding of healthy living and the employment
skills for working in the Leisure industry.
Performing Arts
Learners plan and take part in various performances
throughout the year. Confidence and skills are gained
in Music, Dance and Drama. Learners also investigate
lighting, music and stagecraft.
Residentials
Every year, our learners are encouraged to attend a
week-long residential trip. Destinations have included
Wales, France, London, Torquay and Spain.
Ten Tors Jubilee Challenge
The annual Ten Tors Jubilee Challenge is an optional
opportunity for learners to train, camp and walk on
Dartmoor – a fantastic experience for all!
Meet the Staff!
Name: John Gordon, MA
Teaches: GCSE English,
A Level Communication &
Culture and A Level Philosophy
During my time with Yeovil College,
I’ve taught on a variety of A Level and GCSE courses,
managing A Level Communication & Culture, A Level
Philosophy and GCSE English. My MA thesis was on the
Romantic poet John Clare and I am about to publish a
volume of my own poetry. I’m fascinated by the interface
between literature and religion and have delivered
seminars at other institutions on topics related to these.
Teaching here gives me the opportunity to support
students with a wide variety of learning styles using a
range of flexible teaching methods to make sure they get
the most out of their course. The Pathways Programme
opens up some strong options for students to go on to
future courses and careers. I would highly recommend it.
Vocational Courses
& Apprenticeships
• Apprenticeships Explained
Vocational Courses Explained
What are the courses about
These courses are a mixture of theory and practical which
help you to develop the skills you need to progress in your
chosen career. You will be trained by lecturers who have
experience of working within the industry. The content
is largely related to the vocational area, although there are
generic units of study included on each course. Several
of the courses require a period of work placement.
Course Duration
Entry Level: Time allocation varies.
Level 1: One year, but time allocation varies.
Level 2: About 14 hours per week for one year.
Level 3: About 14 hours per week for two years.
How will you be assessed
You will be continuously assessed through a range of
assignments, which could include presentations, research
topics, essays or work-related activities. It is likely that you
will be working on several assignments at once, so it is
important that you enjoy coursework and are well organised.
Most assignments are marked by your lecturers and
externally verified by the awarding body. However, it is
likely that at least one unit of study will be externally
assessed. You will also have to develop a portfolio of
evidence, which will include assessors’ reports, witness
statements, photographs and other evidence that you
gather to indicate your proficiency. All students on
Vocational courses will also work towards achieving a
Functional Skills qualification.
Specific Entry Requirements
Entry Level: No formal entry requirements.
Level 1: A range of GCSEs at grade D-G
or a pass at Entry Level.
Level 2: A minimum of four GCSEs at grade D
or E or above or a pass at Level 1.
Level 3: A minimum of five GCSEs at grade A*-C,
including English and Maths, or a pass at Level 2.
These are minimum grades which are expected on
all courses. However, some courses make specific
requirements in terms of actual subjects required.
Please ensure you check the details for the specific
course(s) you are interested in.
Additional Expenses
There may be some additional costs associated with
certain courses. For example, you may need to buy core
or revision textbooks, specialist equipment or clothes, or
contribute towards trips and residentials. For details of
specific courses, visit www.yeovil.ac.uk, contact the
College or come to one of our Information Evenings.
Progression
Achievement at one level allows natural progression to
the next level. However, some subjects insist that you are
assessed at Merit level before progressing from Level 2
to Level 3. If you achieve a Level 3 Diploma or Extended
Diploma, you can progress onto Higher Education (HE)
courses at university. Students also progress to HNC/Ds,
degrees and other HE courses at the University Centre
Yeovil. You may decide to leave college after achieving
at any level to take up a suitable career in your chosen
occupational area.
Apprenticeships Explained
What is an Apprenticeship
Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes
which allow you to complete on-the-job training and
gain relevant, nationally recognised qualifications.
Apprenticeships are designed by the Sector Skills
Councils and course content is influenced by relevant
business representatives. In this way, Apprenticeships are
created by people who genuinely understand business,
ensuring that you learn the skills that employers need.
What makes an Apprenticeship different
from other training
While students completing other courses will do most
of their learning in the classroom, Apprenticeships are
work-based. As employees, apprentices earn a wage
and work alongside experienced staff to gain job-specific
skills. Off the job, usually on a day-release basis,
apprentices receive training to work towards nationally
recognised qualifications.
How much will I earn
As a new apprentice, the minimum hourly rate is £2.65*
per hour. However, many employers prefer to pay more.
*Please note: This rate is for apprentices under 19 or those in their first year
of training. Please check www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage-rates
for the most up-to-date information. (Correct at time of print).
Who can be an apprentice
Apprenticeships are open to all age groups above 16 years
old. You must be living in England and not in full-time
education already. An Apprenticeship could be for you if
you are just leaving school, seeking to start a new career
or are moving into a new role with your existing employer
that requires new skills.
Why should I choose Yeovil College
Yeovil College offers one of the widest ranges of
Apprenticeship frameworks in Somerset and the South
West, giving you a much greater chance of training in
the area you really want. We are the only providers in
the South West offering Apprenticeships in Print, IT
Professionals, Engineering Composites, Security &
Electrical Alarm Systems and Creative & Digital Media
(Social Media). This year, we launched a new Social
Media Apprenticeship, Motor Vehicle programmes and
a new range of Higher Apprenticeships.
Yeovil College has an excellent track record of working
with some of the area’s largest and best known
employers, finding the right apprentices and helping
individuals make the right contacts. Both apprentices and
employers are supported by a professional trained team.
What are my progression routes
If you are completing the Intermediate Apprenticeship
(Level 2) programme and your employer is willing to
continue supporting your training at a higher level, then
you can progress on to an Advanced Apprenticeship
(Level 3). When you finish the Advanced Apprenticeship,
your employer will hopefully recognise your potential and
may even offer you continued employment within their
organisation. Alternatively, you may have the opportunity
to progress on to university and/or professional courses
such as those available at the University Centre Yeovil,
many of which can be studied part-time while you
continue to work.
Apprentice of the Year Award 2012
I decided to do an Apprenticeship because I knew I wanted
to work in IT and the Apprenticeship looked like the perfect
first step towards that. The course in general sounded good
and I’d done a lot of theory before, but I wanted to get a job
in the sector and work experience. The Apprenticeship was
my way into IT. I’m very grateful to Dorset County Council
for giving me the opportunity to progress in my career.
Nathan has been promoted since finishing his course and
is now a Level 3 Developer at Dorset County Council. He
hopes to progress to the NVQ Level 4 and continue his
Meet the Staff!
Name: Matt Driver, QTLS Teaches: Engineering at Levels 1, 2 & 3
I worked in Manufacturing Engineering and my main area of expertise comes from making
components for a wide range of projects. These included space projects, under-ocean applications
and even high quality ink-pens for the Armani fashion house! I have worked with very high spec
machines producing components that are smaller than an ant, but accurate to within 1/1000th of a
millimetre. As my role grew, I moved into quality management and later into training apprentices.
This was when I realised I enjoyed teaching and decided to change career. I completed my teacher
training qualifications and have been teaching since 2009.
