Monday Morning / 21 September 2009
0930 - 1130 System Design Implications for Advance Vehicles in NextGen Ballroom G
Chair: Harry N. Swenson, NASA Ames Research Center
Panelists: Fred Wieland, Sensis, Ed Stevens, Raytheon
This panel will address the emerging issues associated with the development of new and advance vehicles that will operate in the Air Transportation System of the future known as NextGen. A long recognized
problem in the development of new and advance vehicles is that in order for their operation to "fit" within the air transportation system many if not all of the design advantages afforded are often reduced or
eliminated. As the Federal Aviation Administration and the nation embark on the decades long the transformation of the Air Transportation System into NextGen a similar transformation needs to be
accomplished in the design of new vehicles to operate within NextGen. These new design processes need to explore not only the advantages of new vehicle but also how they will actually operate within the
system, including interaction with legacy vehicles as well as their environmental and safety impact. NASA is sponsoring two innovative studies that utilize advance modeling and simulation methods to explore
the potential impacts on NextGen of seven classes of advanced air vehicles including: very light jets, super heavy transports, uncrewed aerial systems, supersonic transports, cruise efficient short takeoff and
landing aircraft, rotorcraft, and supersonic business class aircraft. The panel will discuss many of the advances and challenges associated with the multi-faceted design processes that have been utilized in
these studies.
Chair: James Murphy, NASA
Panelists: Tom Prevot, SJSU/NASA, Chris Brinton, Mosaic ATM, Dick Wright, Volpe, Jeff Maddalon, NASA
In the Air Traffic Management domain, software products vary from high level academic research to safety critical operational systems. The intended use of the software component can influence the rigor of
the design, language used for implementation, and completeness of testing. This panel will discuss the level of Software Assurance necessary for a wide variety of ATM applications.
0930 - 1130 Economy, Environment and Society -The Triple Bottom Line for Sustainable Aviation Ballroom D
Hosted by Dr John Barry, Institute for the Sustainable World, Queens University Belfast
This panel will explore the implications of a 'triple bottom line' view of sustainability for the aviation industry, and in particular how this can gel with societal needs and aspirations. Environmentally against the
backdrop of climate change, the shift towards the decarbonisation of transport and a wider 'greening' of the economy where does the future of the aviation industry lie What are the design and manufacturing
implications of the inclusion of the aviation industry within any carbon reduction strategies from the forthcoming Cophenhagen Climate Change negotiations in December Socially, how can the industry
respond to campaigns against aviation noise and air pollution or respond to claims that air travel is and will continue to be a predominately middle class, rich/developed country industry Economically, is the
aviation sector prepared for 'peak oil' and the rise in fossil fuels as supplies decline over the next decade as the International Energy Association delcared in its report of November 2008 What does a
sustainable, green aviation industry look like And are companies preparing now for this inevitable transition
